How to Fix a Rocksmith Real Tone Cable: A Quick Guide

Find out whether a Rocksmith Real Tone Cable problem comes from USB detection, Windows settings, the instrument, Rocksmith configuration, or latency—and when replacement makes sense.

A Real Tone Cable is not necessarily broken just because Rocksmith cannot hear your guitar. First check whether your computer or console detects the cable, then see whether an input meter responds when you play. That separates USB and cable faults from guitar, audio-setting, and game problems—and helps you avoid replacing a cable that still works.

Identify what is failing

  • The cable is absent from your computer: Check its USB connection, port, and hardware.
  • The computer sees it, but Rocksmith does not: Check the game’s input selection and audio configuration.
  • Rocksmith sees it, but there is no guitar signal: Check the instrument, battery, plug, and input level.
  • The signal is weak, distorted, noisy, or delayed: Check instrument output, audio routing, and listening-device latency.

Try these physical checks first

  1. Close Rocksmith before changing connections.
  2. Turn up the guitar or bass volume and tone controls. If it has active electronics, check or replace its battery.
  3. Push the ¼-inch plug fully into the instrument’s output jack.
  4. Firmly reseat the cable’s detachable breakaway connector.
  5. Connect the USB plug directly to a powered computer or console port. Bypass hubs, monitor ports, and docking stations during diagnosis.
  6. Try another USB port, then restart the computer or console and reconnect the cable.
  7. Reopen Rocksmith and watch its input meter while playing.

Ubisoft’s PlayStation setup guide also calls out the USB and breakaway connections, instrument controls, and in-game signal meter. Avoid yanking or repeatedly bending the wire. Gently move it near the plugs while watching the meter; an intermittent signal can point to a damaged connector or conductor. Do not open the molded housing unless you accept that it may be irreparable and could affect remaining return or warranty options.

If Windows does not detect the cable

  1. Connect the cable, then open Settings → System → Sound.
  2. Under input devices, look for Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter or a similarly named USB audio input. Play a note and check whether the input-level meter moves.
  3. If it is not listed, open Device Manager and check Sound, video and game controllers and Other devices.
  4. If an entry appears with a warning icon, troubleshoot the Windows device or driver through Windows Update, Device Manager, or your computer manufacturer.
  5. If there is no entry after trying multiple direct USB ports, test another compatible computer if possible.

The device name and Device Manager outcomes are described in this Microsoft support discussion; labels can vary by system. The cable generally relies on the operating system’s USB audio support rather than a special downloadable Real Tone driver. Avoid unofficial driver-download sites.

Ubisoft’s older Rocksmith 2014 PC FAQ recommends a direct, powered USB connection and says the port should be configured for Full Speed (12 Mbit/s) or faster. That is not a blanket requirement for a USB 2.0 port: diagnose with a direct powered connection rather than assuming every USB 3.x port is incompatible.

If Windows sees it but Rocksmith does not

Check the game’s input and restart it

Select the Real Tone Cable as the input device in Rocksmith’s audio configuration. If you connected or moved the cable while the game was open, close and relaunch the game after reconnecting it. If Windows’ input meter responds but the game does not, the cable and instrument are producing at least some system-level signal; focus on the game configuration before buying a replacement.

For Rocksmith 2014 on PC, Ubisoft’s configuration guidance treats the Real Tone Cable as the standard supported guitar input. Changing USB ports can result in a separate device configuration, so recheck the selected input and its settings after moving the cable.

Rocksmith+ Real Tone Cable
  • Allows users to plug any guitar, bass, or piano to their PC
  • Allows for real-time, responsive guitar or piano play for a recording at 16 bit (up to 48kHz). Plus, the analog-to-digital interface connects the instrument directly to any Windows PC

Set the PC audio format

For Rocksmith+ on PC, Ubisoft recommends 16-bit, 48,000 Hz audio, often labelled 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality) in Windows. This is a recommended setting, not a guaranteed fix for every audio problem.

  1. Open Settings → System → Sound and select the Rocksmith USB input, or open the classic Sound Control Panel and choose it under recording devices.
  2. Open the input device’s properties and find its format or advanced settings.
  3. Choose 16-bit, 48,000 Hz if that option is available, apply the setting, and relaunch Rocksmith.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 menus can differ. Ubisoft’s Rocksmith+ connectivity guide notes that Windows can store separate audio-device configurations by USB port. If you change ports, check the input selection and format again.

  • Turn up the guitar or bass volume. Start with the tone control turned up as well.
  • Make sure the ¼-inch plug is fully seated and the instrument’s output jack is not loose or damaged.
  • For active pickups or active electronics, test the battery. A depleted battery can cause weak or absent output.
  • If you can, test another instrument with a working ¼-inch output. A purely acoustic guitar without a pickup cannot send a direct signal through the Real Tone Cable.
  • Watch the input meter as you play. If it never moves, test the instrument and connections before blaming Rocksmith.

For an acoustic-electric guitar, the pickup and ¼-inch output must be working. Bass instruments may have active electronics or a stronger output, so check the battery and reduce the instrument volume if the signal clips.

Fix a weak, distorted, noisy, or delayed signal

Weak signal or clipping

If the meter barely moves, raise the instrument volume and check the battery, output jack, and ¼-inch connection. If the meter peaks in the red or the sound distorts, lower the instrument’s output. Ubisoft’s PlayStation setup guidance uses the in-game meter to help balance quiet and excessive input; its green/yellow indication is not a universal numerical target for every platform or version.

ROCKSMITH REAL TONE CABLE (WORKS WITH PS3 & XB3) [video game]
  • Compatible with all consoles that support the Rocksmith Game as well as PC
  • Plug any real guitar into Xbox, PS4, PS3, etc.
  • Features breakaway design
  • 11.25ft / 3.429m Cable
  • Rocksmith video game not included

Hum or unwanted noise

Noise can come from the instrument as well as the cable: grounding or shielding, a faulty jack, active electronics, or interference from nearby power supplies, monitors, chargers, or fluorescent lights. Move away from likely sources and test the instrument through another known-good input if available. On PC, also check for incompatible audio formats, enhancements, or another audio device competing for control.

Audio delay

Use wired headphones or speakers while troubleshooting. Ubisoft warns that Bluetooth can add latency with the Real Tone Cable; its Bluetooth guidance recommends wired audio for this setup. Console players should also consider whether sound is routed through a television, which can add delay. Ubisoft’s console connectivity guidance discusses audio routing; the best alternative depends on the console and equipment.

Rocksmith 2014 and Rocksmith+ use different connection options

Version Connection guidance What to keep in mind
Rocksmith 2014 on PC The Real Tone Cable is the standard supported guitar input described in Ubisoft’s PC configuration FAQ. Other input devices may need separate configuration or community modifications; do not assume they are officially supported.
Rocksmith+ on PC Ubisoft lists the Real Tone Cable, Rocksmith Tuner app, and some third-party audio interfaces as connection options. Third-party interface support varies, and Ubisoft says its technical support does not cover those interfaces. Ubisoft lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 64-bit for the PC version.
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 Ubisoft provides a Real Tone Cable connection guide for these consoles. Use the console’s setup flow and its signal meter; the Windows menu steps do not apply.
Xbox Ubisoft provides connectivity guidance. Menu-specific Real Tone Cable steps are not established here; follow the current guide for your console and game version.
macOS Check the cable in the Mac’s audio input settings, then select it in Rocksmith if the version supports it. Do not follow Windows menu paths. Compatibility depends on the Rocksmith version and macOS release.

Ubisoft’s Rocksmith+ product page says the Real Tone Cable is sold separately and may not be available in every country. It also describes the app and selected third-party interfaces as connection options. Check current regional availability rather than assuming an accessory is in stock.

When the cable is probably faulty

Before deciding the cable has failed, test a direct powered USB connection, another port, the breakaway connector, and—if possible—a second compatible computer or console. If the guitar may be the problem, test another instrument with a working output. A failed battery, pickup, or instrument jack can mimic cable failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the cable remains undetected on multiple known-good ports and another compatible system, or produces intermittent signal on more than one instrument, hardware failure is a reasonable conclusion. A sealed consumer cable is not a dependable do-it-yourself repair project; pursue a return or warranty claim if eligible, or replace it. If it works on another system, compare that system’s USB and audio configuration rather than replacing the cable immediately.

Alternatives if you need another connection method

  • Rocksmith+ Tuner app: An option Ubisoft lists for Rocksmith+, but not a general repair for a faulty cable and not a replacement path to assume for Rocksmith 2014.
  • Third-party audio interface: A possible Rocksmith+ option, especially if you already own an interface. Compatibility and setup vary, and Ubisoft does not provide technical support for third-party interfaces.
  • Real Tone Cable replacement: The straightforward first-party route when cross-system tests point to cable failure; confirm regional availability with Ubisoft.
