Microsoft announced the Xbox Adaptive Joystick in August 2024 and released it in 2025. The wired accessory is listed for $29.99 in the U.S. Microsoft Store as of August 2026, but it is not a full replacement for a standard gamepad: it adds one joystick and six configurable button inputs to a larger Xbox or Windows setup.
What Microsoft announced—and what is available now
Microsoft’s August 21, 2024 announcement covered several accessibility offerings, not just the Adaptive Joystick: free 3D-printable thumbstick-topper files, the modular ByoWave Proteus Controller, the 8BitDo Lite SE 2.4G Wireless Controller, and changes to accessibility information and packaging. Microsoft said the products were developed with input from the Gaming & Disability community, nonprofit organizations and accessibility experts; that does not mean any one device will suit every player. Microsoft’s announcement described the joystick as planned for early 2025 in select Xbox markets at a suggested $29.99 USD retail price. It subsequently became available, and the U.S. Microsoft Store still listed it at $29.99 in August 2026.
The topper files have also evolved since the announcement. In its May 21, 2026 update, Microsoft said it had improved their attachment design for greater security under higher-force use and added a Goal Post shape. The files were free to download, with seven shapes and adjustable width and height. Xbox’s 2026 accessibility update has the current details.
What the Xbox Adaptive Joystick does
The Adaptive Joystick is a single wired joystick accessory intended primarily for players with limited mobility. It has one standard thumbstick, four buttons on the front and two more positioned to echo bumper and trigger placement. The inputs can be assigned to different controls. Its form may support one-handed use, tabletop play or operation with a body part other than a hand, depending on the player’s movement and setup.
#1 Best Overall
- Officially licensed by Xbox, and compatible with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & Windows 10 and above.
- Designed for accessibility - unified face-button layout, featuring lower-resistance buttons and highly sensitive joysticks.
- 2.4G wireless connection for Xbox and Windows.
- Dual Super Buttons - offer large, programmable keys, allowing you to map any function instantly without using software.
- 3 profiles. 3.5mm audio jack. Microphone mute button. Hall Effect joysticks.
A threaded ¼-inch-20 mounting point lets the joystick attach to a compatible mount, but Microsoft does not include mounting equipment. The thread is only an attachment interface: the mount still needs to hold the device securely and position it within the player’s comfortable reach. Microsoft’s product announcement describes its controls and mounting point.
Is it a standalone controller?
No—not in the usual sense of a complete gamepad. The joystick supplies a stick and six configurable button inputs, but it does not provide every standard controller input or a wireless connection. Microsoft describes it as a companion control. Used directly with a console or PC, it may need another controller for full menu-navigation and Nexus-button functionality. Xbox Controller Assist can combine two controllers so that they operate as one control setup. Microsoft’s product listing provides the product and connection details.
That distinction matters when budgeting: the $29.99 U.S. price is for the joystick, not necessarily for a complete playable setup. Remapping changes what existing inputs do; it cannot create additional physical buttons, a second stick or other controls that are not present.

What you need for each setup
Direct connection to a console or PC
- The Adaptive Joystick and a supported Xbox console or compatible Windows PC.
- The Xbox Accessories app for remapping and profile management, where supported.
- Another controller if you need the full menu-navigation and Nexus-button functionality Microsoft describes for direct use.
The product listing specifies updated Windows 11 x64 PCs. Compatibility can vary with system, firmware, game and configuration, so check the current listing and the game’s input support before buying.
Using an Xbox Adaptive Controller
The Xbox Adaptive Controller serves as a hub for external controls such as switches, buttons and joysticks. The joystick can be one part of that arrangement; any other controls the player needs must be selected separately. Microsoft says pictured external buttons are representative, not included. The U.S. Store listed the Adaptive Controller at $99.99 in August 2026. See the Microsoft Store listing and Xbox’s Adaptive Controller information for product and ecosystem details.
Using a mount
Choose a compatible ¼-inch-20 mount and a stable surface, arm, tray or other support suited to the player’s reach and the forces they apply. The mount is an additional item, not part of the joystick purchase.

Button remapping and profiles
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessories app supports button remapping and multiple controller profiles, which users can switch between. That can make one physical layout work for different games or tasks. It does not increase the number of inputs: players who need a D-pad, multiple face buttons, triggers, two sticks or other simultaneous controls may need external switches, another controller or a different adaptive device. Microsoft outlines the app and Adaptive Controller ecosystem on its Xbox Adaptive Controller page.
Free 3D-printable thumbstick toppers
Xbox provides digital topper designs through Xbox Design Lab. The files cost nothing, but turning one into a usable part requires access to a 3D printer or a commercial print service. Print quality, material, fit and durability depend on the design and printing process; a poorly fitting part may not stay attached, and Microsoft disclaims responsibility for printing and use of the files.

Microsoft said the attachment design was improved to hold more securely under higher-force use. These remain user-printed parts rather than ready-to-use accessories. How the other announced accessories differ
| Product | What it is | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| ByoWave Proteus Controller | A modular accessibility controller | Microsoft described it as officially available through ByoWave when it announced the group of products. Current price and stock are not established here; check ByoWave’s current listing. It is a broader modular option, not an equivalent substitute for a $29.99 single joystick. |
| 8BitDo Lite SE 2.4G Wireless Controller | A compact wireless controller included in Microsoft’s accessibility announcement | It is not the same kind of open-ended external-switch hub as the Xbox Adaptive Controller. Check 8BitDo’s current product information for price and compatibility. |
Microsoft’s 2024 announcement introduces both products. Their current pricing, stock and compatibility are not established by that announcement.
Price and the cost of a complete setup
| Item | Price established here | What the price covers |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Adaptive Joystick | $29.99 in the U.S. Microsoft Store as of August 2026 | The joystick accessory; not a complete controller setup. Regional price, taxes, shipping and stock may differ. Microsoft’s accessible devices store |
| Xbox Adaptive Controller | $99.99 in the U.S. Microsoft Store as of August 2026 | The hub; external controls and mounts are separate. Microsoft Store listing |
| 3D-printable thumbstick toppers | Files are free | Printing is not: users need their own printer or a print service, and the printed part’s fit depends on the result. Xbox’s 2026 update |
| External buttons, switches and mounts | Variable; no single price established | Selected separately for the player’s control needs and mounting arrangement. |
The total depends on what the player already owns and which inputs, mounts or printing services they need. A low device price should not be mistaken for the likely cost of every adaptive setup.
Who is the joystick likely to suit?
It may be a useful fit if
- You need one joystick positioned differently from the one on a standard controller.
- You can use a few buttons but benefit from a different arrangement or one-handed setup.
- You already have an Xbox Adaptive Controller or another controller to provide other inputs and navigation.
- A wired device and separately sourced mount are workable in your space.
Look at other options if
- You need a complete controller with all standard controls, or wireless operation.
- You need many simultaneous inputs, extensive trigger or D-pad control, or dual-stick play without adding other devices.
- You need the mount to be included, or the stock joystick does not suit your grip, reach, force or movement pattern.
- You expect one accessory to provide full console navigation on its own.
The same layout can help one player and be unsuitable for another. If possible, consider the player’s range of motion, strength, fatigue, reach, mounting needs and required inputs together rather than choosing by product description alone.
Quick Recap
What to check before buying
- Platform and game: Confirm that your console or Windows configuration and the games you play support the intended inputs. “Works with Xbox and PC” does not guarantee identical behavior in every game or setup.
- Navigation: Plan for another controller if you need the full menu and Nexus functions Microsoft identifies for direct use.
- Input count: List the controls you need at the same time. Remapping changes assignments but cannot add missing physical inputs.
- Mount and cable placement: Select a secure mount separately, and check that the wired connection can reach without getting in the way.
- Local availability: Microsoft announced availability in select Xbox markets, not every country. Confirm your local store price and stock rather than assuming the U.S. listing applies.
