Historical update: This article covers the October 25, 2024 launch. It does not confirm whether Black Ops 6 is still in the Game Pass catalog or which plans include it today.
On October 25, 2024, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 launched on Xbox Game Pass the same day it went on sale. Microsoft officially listed it for PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate, with console, PC, and cloud access; contemporaneous reporting also said existing console subscribers could play it. Cloud streaming required Ultimate. That made the launch the first day-one Game Pass release for a mainline Call of Duty and a notable test of Microsoft’s subscription strategy.

What did the Game Pass version include?
The launch listing described the base game, with a campaign set during the Gulf War era, multiplayer, and round-based Zombies. Launch coverage also described 12 new core 6-versus-6 maps, four smaller Strike maps, and Omnimovement, a movement system that lets players sprint, slide, and dive in multiple directions. These are launch details, not a review or a guarantee about later updates. Xbox’s launch announcement; Thurrott’s coverage.
A subscription entitlement was not the same as buying a premium edition. Xbox’s cloud announcement directed players interested in the Vault Edition to upgrade separately. Xbox announcement.
How Black Ops 6 cloud gaming worked
Xbox Cloud Gaming access began rolling out at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time on October 25, 2024, for Game Pass Ultimate members. It let players stream rather than download the full game, subject to a supported device, controller or compatible input method, reliable internet, and service availability. A cloud session did not grant ownership; access depended on the subscription and the game remaining available in the catalog. Xbox’s cloud announcement.

Why this was a significant Xbox launch
Black Ops 6 was the first mainline Call of Duty to arrive on Game Pass on its commercial release day. It was also the franchise’s first availability through Xbox Cloud Gaming at launch. Putting a major annual series on subscription immediately after Microsoft completed its Activision Blizzard acquisition in 2023 made this a high-profile test of how the company would use that catalog across console, PC, and streaming. Xbox on the cloud rollout; Thurrott on the launch.
The commercial trade-off was straightforward but hard to measure from the announcement alone: immediate subscription access could encourage people to join or stay subscribed, while some players who might otherwise have bought the game could play through Game Pass instead. The launch demonstrated Microsoft’s strategy; it did not, by itself, establish how many subscribers it gained or how sales changed.
Rank #3
- The Black Ops 6 campaign offers dynamic play with various playing areas with beautiful backgrounds, intense action and great spy activities
- In a top-class multiplayer experience, gamers can test their skills on 16 new maps at launch, including 12 standard 6v6 maps and 4 battle maps played in 2v2 or 6v8
- Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of fan-favorite Zombie mode
Modern Warfare III and Warzone also arrived in the cloud
The October 25 cloud rollout also brought Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and Call of Duty: Warzone to Xbox Cloud Gaming for Ultimate members. Warzone remains a free-to-play game in its normal form; its inclusion in the cloud announcement concerned streaming through the Ultimate ecosystem, not a claim that it required Game Pass to play conventionally. Xbox’s announcement.
Subscribe or buy?
The better choice depends on how long you expect to play, whether you value the wider catalog, and whether you need cloud streaming. The launch-era comparison below is qualitative: no current subscription or standalone price is established here, so a numeric break-even calculation would be misleading.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Consideration | Game Pass | Standalone purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Trying the campaign, multiplayer, or Zombies | Useful if you already have a qualifying plan or want to try the game without paying its full retail price. | More expensive up front if you only want a short trial. |
| Long-term play | Recurring charges continue while subscribed; access can end if the game leaves the catalog or the subscription ends. | Better suited to avoiding recurring charges and keeping access independently of the subscription catalog. |
| Cloud streaming | At launch, required Game Pass Ultimate and a supported device and connection. | A purchase alone did not establish Xbox cloud access. |
| Platform | Xbox Game Pass does not provide access to the PlayStation version. | Buy on the platform where you intend to play. |
| Premium edition content | The base-game entitlement should not be assumed to include Vault Edition benefits. | A premium edition may be purchased where offered. |
Before making a decision now, check the live plan comparison, the current Game Pass catalog, and the relevant platform store. The 2024 launch listing and prices do not establish present-day availability or cost.
