If sound is missing from a headset connected to an Xbox One controller, first check the plug and mute controls, then adjust headset volume and the game/chat balance in the Xbox guide. The controller itself does not play normal game audio through a built-in speaker: “controller sound” usually means a wired headset connected to its 3.5-mm jack or a headset adapter. The steps below also cover microphone and party-chat failures, which can have different causes from missing game audio.
Identify which sound is failing
Test game audio and party chat separately. For example, hearing friends does not prove that the game-audio path is working, and a working microphone does not prove that the headset speakers are working.
| Symptom | Check first |
|---|---|
| No game audio, but party chat works | Headset chat mixer, headset format, game volume, plug seating and headset speakers. |
| Party chat works, but game audio is missing | Chat mixer, headset-audio output and the game’s own audio settings. |
| Game audio works, but the microphone does not | Physical mute, microphone position, party or privacy settings, then the microphone and controller jack. |
| Neither game audio nor chat works | Plug or adapter connection, headset compatibility, controller settings, firmware and hardware. |
| Others cannot hear you | Mic mute, party or game-chat channel, privacy restrictions and microphone function. |
| Sound is quiet | Xbox headset volume, chat mixer, headset inline controls and adapter controls. |
| Sound cuts out, crackles or comes from one side | Plug seating, cable or jack damage, adapter, headset condition and audio format. |
| Headset appears connected but is silent | Output and mixer settings, physical mute, controller firmware and headset function. |
Check the headset, plug and controller model
- Push the headset plug firmly into the controller. Remove a protective case if it prevents the plug from seating fully. Do not force the connector.
- Inspect the plug and cable for visible damage, dirt or corrosion. Check any inline volume wheel and mute switch; lower a flip-to-mute boom microphone fully if the headset uses one.
- If using a headset adapter, unplug and reconnect it. Gently move the plug while listening. If sound cuts in and out, the plug, cable, jack or adapter may be damaged.
- Check whether the controller has a 3.5-mm headset jack. Early Xbox One controllers may need an Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter; later controllers include a standard jack. Microsoft described the original headset and adapter arrangement in its Xbox One headset-adapter announcement. Compatibility still depends on the controller model and headset wiring.
For headset-specific connection guidance, see Xbox’s stereo-headset setup instructions and chat-headset troubleshooting.
Adjust headset volume and game/chat balance
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Open the Audio & music panel.
- Raise Headset volume, and confirm the headset is not muted.
- If available, adjust Headset chat mixer. Move it toward game audio if the game is too quiet, or toward chat if party members are too quiet.
Guide layout and labels can vary with dashboard version and connected accessories. Check headset or adapter controls too: they can change volume or mute independently of console settings. Xbox describes headset and chat-mixer features on its gaming-headsets page.

Set a simple headset-audio format
- Press the Xbox button and go to Profile & system > Settings.
- Open General > Volume & audio output.
- Under Headset audio, select Stereo uncompressed as a baseline test.
- Once ordinary stereo works, test Windows Sonic for Headphones, Dolby Atmos for Headphones or DTS Headphone:X if available and supported by your setup. Check any setting that controls whether TV or speaker audio is muted when a headset is connected.
Microsoft’s Xbox One instructions for Windows Sonic and Dolby Atmos explain the headset-format options. Spatial audio is optional processing, not a repair for a loose plug or failed microphone. Dolby Atmos or DTS may require an app, trial or license; check the current terms. If distortion disappears in Stereo uncompressed, the issue may involve processing or compatibility rather than a physical fault.
Troubleshoot microphone and party chat separately
- Check the headset’s physical mute switch and microphone position.
- Test the microphone in an Xbox party, and confirm whether you are using party chat, game chat or a game’s own voice channel.
- Check whether party members are individually muted and whether the microphone indicator responds when you speak.
- Review privacy and communication restrictions, particularly on child or family accounts. A restriction may affect communication, but a failed microphone can also come from the headset, controller jack, party state or game settings.
- If several party members are affected, check Xbox service status and network conditions after verifying the headset and chat settings.
For more party-specific checks, use Xbox One party-audio troubleshooting. If the microphone works in a party but not in one game, check that game’s voice-chat mode, mute controls and audio settings.

Update the controller
- Press the Xbox button and go to Profile & system > Settings.
- Open Devices & connections > Accessories.
- Select the affected controller and look for the … menu or a firmware-update option.
- If an update is offered, install it and keep the controller connected until installation finishes. Reconnect the headset and test again.
Menu names and update prompts can vary by dashboard revision and controller model, and an update is not guaranteed to fix a hardware fault. If wireless pairing or updating is unreliable, connect the controller to the console with a USB cable. If an update appears interrupted, do not disconnect during installation; once it is finished, restart the console and reconnect the controller. If the controller disappears from Accessories, reconnect or re-pair it before trying again. Xbox’s controller and input support is the first-party reference for controller-management help.
Restart the console and reconnect
- Turn off the Xbox One and disconnect its power cable.
- Wait several seconds, reconnect power and start the console.
- If needed, remove and reinsert the controller’s batteries or rechargeable pack, then re-pair the controller if it does not reconnect.
- Reconnect the headset and test game audio and party chat separately.
A restart can clear a temporary accessory-detection or audio-routing state. It cannot repair a damaged cable, worn jack or failed microphone.

Find out whether the headset, controller or adapter is at fault
Use compatible equipment for these comparisons; a phone or PC test may not be conclusive if the headset’s wiring or controls differ.
| Test | Result | Likely area |
|---|---|---|
| Use the same headset on another controller | It works there | Original controller or its adapter. |
| Try a different compatible headset on the original controller | The other headset works | Original headset, cable or microphone. |
| Try multiple known-good headsets on one controller | None work | That controller’s jack, adapter, settings or firmware. |
| Test the headset on another compatible device | It fails there too | Headset or cable; a different device’s connector wiring can affect the result. |
| Use the headset directly on a controller with a 3.5-mm jack | Direct connection works but adapter connection does not | Adapter or its connection. |
| Check controller operation without a headset | Controller also disconnects or stops responding | A broader controller connection or power problem may be involved. |
If more than one controller has the same issue, look for a shared cause: the headset, adapter, console audio settings, party or privacy settings, or one game’s audio configuration. If only one game fails, start with its in-game audio and voice-chat settings.

Choose a repair only after isolating the fault
- Headset fails on multiple compatible devices: replace or repair the headset or cable.
- Several compatible headsets fail on one controller: the controller jack or controller itself is suspect; compare another controller before replacing anything.
- An early controller has no headset jack: use a compatible adapter or a controller with an integrated 3.5-mm jack. The original Microsoft adapter is an older accessory, so current availability is not established here.
- Wired audio works but wireless convenience is the priority: choose a headset explicitly compatible with Xbox One and check its pairing, battery, firmware and range requirements. Microsoft lists Xbox One among the compatible platforms for its Xbox Wireless Headset.
- Stereo works and you want spatial audio: consider a supported format or app only after confirming the headset works normally. Optional spatial-audio licensing does not fix a physical or microphone fault.
Microsoft’s Xbox Stereo Headset information describes Xbox One support for that product. For any replacement headset, verify Xbox One compatibility for the exact model, connector or wireless method, microphone, controls and adapter needs before buying.
