The latest official Xbox build found is 1.6.7.219067, released February 12, 2026; its notes focus on performance and stability but do not promise to fix every crash. Reinstall only after the safer steps below, and do not delete saved data as a routine fix.
Identify what is happening before changing anything
A game that closes to the dashboard is different from a network disconnect or a loading screen that never finishes. Note the exact symptom and when it occurs; that will help narrow the cause without risking a save.
- Dashboard crash: the game closes and returns you to the Xbox dashboard.
- Freeze: the game stops responding, but the Xbox remains on and responsive.
- Infinite loading: the game remains on a loading screen or opening cinematic without closing.
- Connection failure: you are returned to the menu or disconnected from a host, but the application stays open.
- Console shutdown or overheating warning: investigate ventilation and console temperature rather than treating it as an ordinary game crash.
- Missing world or save: stop before deleting or resetting data; this needs a cautious save-data check.
Also record whether the issue happens at startup, after pressing A, while loading a world, during fast travel, near a particular base or object, or only in multiplayer.
Check the game build and install all updates
On the main menu, check the displayed build number. The official 1.6.7 release notes list Xbox Series X|S build 1.6.7.219067, released February 12, 2026. The preceding Xbox build was 1.6.6.218161. If your game has not reached 1.6.7.219067, let the update finish before playing and check the main menu again.

Game and network versions are separate. For multiplayer or cross-play, all participants need compatible versions; an outdated host or joining player can cause session trouble that may look like a crash. The developer’s version notes discuss compatibility between game versions.
Fully quit the game instead of using Quick Resume
A resumed session can retain a bad or stale state. The developer recommends closing the game fully when a long-running session develops connection problems. Use this clean relaunch before trying more disruptive steps:
- Leave the current world through the in-game system menu, if the game still responds.
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Highlight Return to Moria.
- Press the controller’s Menu button and select Quit.
- Launch the game again from the Xbox dashboard rather than reopening it through Quick Resume.
This closes the running session; it does not delete the world or saved data. The developer’s Xbox network and session guidance describes leaving the world and quitting through the Xbox guide.
Restart or power-cycle the Xbox
If a clean relaunch does not help—especially if the crash happens immediately after launch—restart the console. If repeated failures continue, a full power cycle clears the current console power state:

- Fully quit Return to Moria.
- Turn off the Xbox.
- Unplug the console’s power cable.
- Wait at least two minutes.
- Reconnect the cable, turn on the console, and launch the game.
A power cycle is not the same as leaving the console in sleep mode. It is a low-risk troubleshooting step; it cannot repair a defect tied to one particular world or in-game trigger. General Xbox crash guidance from Square Enix support also recommends power-cycling and reinstalling when simpler steps fail.
Check Xbox software and ventilation
Install console updates
Open Settings and go to System, then the available Updates section. Dashboard labels can vary between revisions. Install any pending system update and restart the Xbox before testing the game again.
Check for overheating symptoms
If the entire console powers off, shows an overheating warning, or fails only after extended play, make sure it is in an open, well-ventilated area, away from heat sources and enclosed cabinets, with vents unobstructed. Do not cover the console or open it to attempt a repair. Xbox crash guidance also advises keeping the console well ventilated.
Find out whether one world, base, or activity triggers the problem
If other games and a new Return to Moria world work, but one world repeatedly fails, the issue may be tied to that save, location, or session rather than the whole installation. Test methodically and avoid deleting the affected world.

- Compare worlds: check whether a new world loads. If it does, test the affected world only if you can do so without repeatedly forcing the same failure.
- Compare solo and multiplayer: try the affected world solo, if possible. A crash limited to a shared session points toward the host, client, network state, or a multiplayer-specific trigger.
- Isolate a location or object: note whether the crash happens near a large or complex base, bedroll, hearth, NPC, pallet, or other specific object. If the world loads safely, avoid the suspected area and change an object only when you can do so without risking progress.
- Record the trigger: note the world, location, action, and whether the same result happens on another map stone or in another area.
Past official updates show that some world-specific situations have caused problems: the 1.3.3 notes included a fix for clients crashing while loading into worlds with large player constructions, and the 1.6.2 notes addressed a crash caused by building multiple hearths too close together. These historical fixes do not mean that every large base or hearth arrangement will crash on the current build.
If fast travel causes a crash or endless loading
The 1.3.4 hotfix addressed infinite loading during fast travel, and later updates covered map-stone and late-game travel issues. If the problem recurs:
- Fully quit and relaunch before trying the same map stone again.
- Walk to the destination instead of fast traveling, if practical.
- Test whether one map stone or all map stones trigger it.
- In multiplayer, have the host and joiners all quit and relaunch.
- Record the origin and destination for a support report.
See the official 1.3.4 hotfix notes for the historical fast-travel fix.
Troubleshoot crashes limited to multiplayer or cross-play
First determine whether the host, a joining player, or everyone is affected. Test the same world solo or offline if possible, fully quit the game on each participating Xbox, and confirm that everyone has compatible game and network versions. Check Xbox network status, sign-in status, and NAT type. If the game offers a cross-play setting, temporarily disabling it can help isolate whether the issue follows cross-platform play.

The game supports cross-play, but host limits differ by platform: official launch notes say Xbox and PS5 hosts support up to four players, while PC hosts support up to eight. The developer also warns that Series S hosts may experience reduced performance when hosting cross-play sessions. That is a performance qualification, not evidence that Series S cannot run the game or that every Series S crash has the same cause. See the Xbox launch update and developer version notes.
If you are returned to the menu or disconnected without the application closing, troubleshoot it as a session or connection failure, not a confirmed dashboard crash. The game can be played offline, but online multiplayer requires an Xbox account and a connection, according to the developer’s network guidance. Router changes are unlikely to help a crash that also happens in offline solo play.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reinstall the game if simpler steps fail
A reinstall may replace damaged game files, but it will not necessarily fix a bug in a specific world, an online-session issue, or a defect in the current build. Try it after updating, fully quitting, restarting, and power-cycling:
- Open My games & apps.
- Highlight The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria and press the Menu button.
- Select Uninstall all.
- Reinstall the game and any required add-ons.
- Wait for installation and updates to complete before launching.
Uninstalling the game is not the same as deleting saved data. Avoid choosing an option that removes saves as a generic cache fix: deleting local or cloud data can put progress at risk. If a world disappears or repeatedly crashes while loading, stop before destructive save-data steps and contact support.

Unverified community workaround for crashes near beds
Some players have reported that changing the editable-text setting helped with crashes near beds or bedrolls. This is anecdotal and is not confirmed in official patch notes or support documentation. If you can reach the setting safely, you can test it without treating it as a guaranteed fix:
- Open the game’s settings.
- Change Editable Text from Show Default Names Only to Show Custom Text.
- Save the setting, exit the menu, and reload.
The report is at this community thread. Other reports about map-stone travel, pallets, and hosting are also anecdotal, not proof of a universal bug.
Contact North Beach Games if the crash persists
If a crash reliably follows one world, base, map stone, or multiplayer activity after the steps above, report the reproducible details rather than deleting the save. Use the North Beach Games support ticket form or its support directory. Include:
- Xbox model: Series X or Series S.
- Game build and network version.
- Whether you were playing solo, hosting, or joining; whether cross-play was enabled.
- World name, location, and the exact action before the crash.
- Whether a new world works and whether the issue occurs offline.
- Whether the application closed, froze, loaded indefinitely, or disconnected.
- For multiplayer or connection problems: country or region, internet provider, router/modem model, NAT type, Xbox sign-in status, and connection speeds.
The official 1.6.7 notes describe a performance- and stability-focused update, not a fix for every remaining crash. In an April 2026 community message, North Beach Games said active development had concluded, while support would remain available and critical issues affecting the core experience could still be assessed. Do not assume a future content patch for a recurring issue; see the April 2026 community message.
