How to Hard Reset or Power Cycle an Xbox Series X/S

A power cycle is usually the safest first step for a frozen Xbox Series X/S. Learn the exact steps, what it preserves, and when a console reset is appropriate.

If your Xbox Series X or Series S is frozen or acting up, try a power cycle before a factory reset: hold the console’s front Xbox button for about 10 seconds until it shuts down, unplug the power cable for at least 10 seconds, reconnect it, then turn the console back on. This does not intentionally erase games, apps, accounts, or saved data, though unsaved progress in an open game may be lost.

Hard reset, restart, and factory reset are different

“Hard reset” is informal wording, not generally a specific Xbox menu command. It often means a power cycle: fully shut down the console, disconnect power briefly, and start it again. A factory reset is a separate, more consequential operation.

Action What it does Best for
Restart Reboots through the Xbox interface. A responsive console with sluggishness or a temporary software glitch.
Power cycle Forces a full shutdown and fresh start by disconnecting power briefly. It does not intentionally erase installed content or accounts. A frozen console, malfunctioning app, or temporary audio, display, or network behavior.
Reset and keep my games & apps Resets console software and settings while attempting to retain installed games and apps. Accounts and preferences may be removed. Persistent software problems after less disruptive troubleshooting.
Reset and remove everything Erases local accounts, settings, installed games and apps, and personal information. Preparing the console for sale, gifting, or recycling, or a severe problem when less destructive steps fail.

Dashboard wording can vary with system updates and language. Choose the equivalent power or reset option if a label differs.

Restart an Xbox from the controller

Use a normal restart if the console still responds:

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
  1. Press the Xbox button on the controller.
  2. Open Profile & system, then choose Power.
  3. Select Restart console. If you only want to shut it down, choose Turn off console instead.

If the controller or dashboard is unresponsive, use the console’s physical power button.

Power cycle an Xbox Series X or Series S

  1. Press and hold the Xbox button on the front of the console for about 10 seconds, until the console shuts down completely. Make sure you are not holding the controller’s button.
  2. Confirm the console is off, then unplug its power cable.
  3. Wait at least 10 seconds before reconnecting the cable. A longer wait is a reasonable precaution, but a multi-minute wait is not required by the commonly published procedure.
  4. Reconnect power and press the console’s front Xbox button to start it.

The power-cycle timing is described in Bethesda Support’s Xbox Series X|S power-cycle instructions. For an ordinary cycle, disconnecting the power cable is the essential step; unplugging HDMI, Ethernet, USB devices, or external storage is not normally necessary.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
  • Avoid forcing shutdown during a system update unless the console is genuinely frozen and there is no safer option.
  • If a power strip may be faulty, try a known-working wall outlet or properly functioning surge protector.
  • For diagnosis, you can temporarily remove external drives or accessories that might be involved in a fault.

What a power cycle can and cannot fix

A full shutdown and restart can clear temporary operating state and may resolve a freeze, an app that will not launch, a stuck download or update, erratic Guide or Home behavior, or an unusual audio, display, sign-in, or network state. It may also close Quick Resume sessions. Bethesda lists power cycling as a troubleshooting step for Series X|S performance issues; see its performance troubleshooting guidance.

A power cycle is not a guaranteed cache repair or a fix for every fault. It will not resolve a service outage, router failure, account entitlement problem, restricted airflow, overheating, corrupted game installation, or failing hardware by itself. Repeated unexpected shutdowns or persistent HDMI problems call for further diagnosis rather than repeated resets.

Installed games, apps, accounts, subscriptions, achievements, and cloud saves are not intentionally erased by a power cycle. However, unsaved progress held only in the current game session can be lost when a frozen game or console is forcibly shut down. Cloud-save recovery depends on the save having synchronized and on signing in to the correct account.

Reset the console while keeping games and apps

Try this only after a restart, power cycle, and ordinary troubleshooting have not resolved a persistent software or dashboard issue. It is a substantial reset, not another name for a power cycle.

Factory-reset and erase the Xbox

Use the same menu path—Profile & system → Settings → System → Console info → Reset console—then select Reset and remove everything. This erases local accounts, settings, installed content, and personal information, so it is not the right choice for a routine freeze.

Choose this option when selling, gifting, or recycling the console, or when severe software corruption remains after less destructive recovery options. Microsoft recommends resetting an Xbox before it is sold, gifted, or recycled; consult its guidance on preparing an Xbox for transfer. Back up anything you need and ensure important saves have synchronized before erasing the console.

If the Xbox powers on but shows no picture

A blank screen does not necessarily mean the power cycle failed. First isolate the display connection:

  • Confirm the TV is on the HDMI input connected to the Xbox.
  • Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends and try another TV HDMI port or a known-good cable.
  • Temporarily remove HDMI switches, splitters, capture cards, and AV receivers from the connection.
  • Check whether the console appears to start by observing its front light, startup sound, fan behavior, or presence on the network.

If the console starts but still provides no image, use the current Xbox Support recovery instructions for the Startup Troubleshooter and verify the procedure for your specific Series X or Series S model. Do not rely on an old Xbox One button combination: recovery sequences can be model-specific, and the exact current sequence is not established here.

If the Xbox will not turn on

  1. Test the wall outlet with another device, then reseat the Xbox power cable.
  2. Disconnect unnecessary USB accessories and external drives.
  3. Leave the console disconnected briefly, reconnect it, and try the console’s own power button rather than the controller.
  4. Check for unusual lights or sounds, excessive heat, or a burning smell.

If there is a burning smell or other sign of electrical or physical damage, stop using the console and seek official service. Do not open it for a routine reset. Microsoft’s Series S service guide says to power off and disconnect the console from the wall before service or cleaning; internal repair is not an ordinary troubleshooting step.

What to try if the problem returns

  • One game or app fails: Check for its update and, if it is installed on external storage, test with that drive disconnected.
  • Downloads, sign-in, or network behavior is stuck: Check the network connection and whether the relevant Xbox service is available; restarting the console cannot fix an outage or router fault.
  • Shutdowns happen repeatedly or the console is unusually hot: Check ventilation and stop treating the issue as a simple software glitch. A reset cannot fix restricted airflow or a hardware fault.
  • The console cannot boot or show video: Follow current model-specific Xbox recovery instructions, then contact Xbox Support if recovery fails.

Startup expectations can also depend on the power setting: Xbox Wire notes that Series X|S consoles default to the Shutdown energy setting out of the box, which can make startup take longer than Sleep. See Xbox Wire’s Series X|S setup overview.
