If you want something easier to carry, look at iPad mini. Choose cellular if you intend to play while walking away from Wi-Fi. Confirm that the particular generation and configuration provides the location features you need; do not assume every iPad variant has identical GPS capability. A standard iPad is generally a more proportionate Pokémon GO purchase than an iPad Pro unless you also need high-end creative or productivity performance.

A Wi-Fi model can use a phone hotspot, but internet access and location capability are separate questions: a hotspot supplies data, not necessarily the tablet’s own dependable positioning. Consider 256GB if this will be a broader-use tablet for media and other games.
- Good fit: Android users seeking a current, general-purpose tablet that can also handle Pokémon GO.
- Trade-offs: Its roughly 10.9-inch class display is not pocketable, and some phone-oriented screens or controls may feel awkward on it.

Cellular versions cost more, so compare the total against a large-screen phone. As with other iPads, verify location capability for the exact generation and connectivity configuration before relying on it outdoors.
Best for home use: Google Pixel Tablet
The Pixel Tablet makes more sense as a home-focused Android tablet for streaming, casting, and Google services than as an automatic Pokémon GO recommendation. Google’s specifications list Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, ultra-wideband, and a minimum five-year security-update commitment. Those features do not by themselves establish that a particular configuration will provide the location behavior needed for outdoor play. Check the Pixel Tablet specifications and Google Store configuration before buying.
It may suit a player who mostly uses the tablet indoors and has verified location behavior or expects to use a phone hotspot. If Pokémon GO is the main reason for the purchase, a cellular iPad, an appropriate cellular Android model, or simply continuing to use a phone is a more straightforward choice.

When a premium tablet is worth it
Flagship iPads and Samsung Galaxy Tab S models are sensible if you also want demanding games, creative applications, media editing, or a tablet that can take on productivity work. They offer more performance headroom and often better displays, but Pokémon GO alone does not justify paying a premium for them. General tablet roundups such as TechRadar’s tablet guide, Tom’s Guide’s tablet picks, and its Samsung tablet guide can help compare broader use cases; those rankings are not Pokémon GO compatibility tests.
For the game itself, prioritize location, mobile data, battery, and handling over a high refresh-rate screen or top-tier processor. A recent midrange tablet should be adequate; do not infer that more RAM or a flagship chipset guarantees smoother play.

Location capability and internet are different
Pokémon GO needs dependable location services and an internet connection. GPS or other location hardware helps determine where the device is; cellular data or Wi-Fi supplies network access. A cellular connection does not automatically guarantee better GPS accuracy, and a Wi-Fi-only tablet is not automatically incapable of location—but Wi-Fi-only devices may be unreliable for outdoor location-based play. Pokémon’s compatibility guidance warns that functionality is not guaranteed for all tablets and that Wi-Fi-only or GPS-lacking devices may not work reliably: see Pokémon Support’s system requirements and compatibility guidance.

For walking routes, Community Days, travel, or festivals, choose a cellular model unless you have a dependable hotspot plan and have confirmed the tablet’s own location support. Verify the exact SKU and regional variant rather than relying on a family name or the words “Wi-Fi” or “5G.”
Tablet support and layout are imperfect
The App Store listing says Pokémon GO is optimized for smartphones, not tablets, and warns that compatibility is not guaranteed on devices without GPS or connected only to Wi-Fi. Niantic likewise says the game is not optimized for tablets and lists 720 × 1280 as a preferred resolution in its supported-devices guidance. In practice, a bigger screen can help with map visibility, raid lobbies, and menus, while phone-oriented layouts may scale awkwardly, leave unused space, or make touch controls less natural. Read the current App Store listing or Google Play listing and check the current supported-device guidance before purchase; compatibility can change with game and operating-system updates.
Performance and memory
Pokémon Support cites 2GB or more of RAM for an optimal smartphone Pokémon GO experience in its Pokémon GO Plus FAQ. That low smartphone-oriented baseline is not a sensible target for a new tablet in 2026 and is not a promise of smooth performance on every device. As practical buying guidance—not an official game requirement—avoid unusually low-memory models; prefer at least 4GB of RAM, and 6GB or more if you often switch among the game, maps, and messaging or want more useful life. A recent midrange processor from a mainstream vendor should be sufficient for Pokémon GO; no provided evidence establishes a frame-rate advantage for any specific tablet.

Screen, battery, and outdoor comfort
An 8–9-inch tablet favors portability; 10–11 inches is the best general-purpose compromise; 12–13 inches is better suited to home use or accessibility needs than walking play. Beyond size, outdoor readability depends on brightness and glare, so check manufacturer specifications and consider how reflective the screen is. High refresh rate is a secondary benefit, not a substitute for location reliability or battery endurance.
Location services, network use, graphics, Bluetooth, and a bright screen all draw power. The App Store listing warns that continued GPS use can significantly reduce battery life. Carry a USB-C power bank for longer sessions, use a protective case that still permits charging, and reduce brightness when conditions allow. Avoid assuming a tablet will last all day in Pokémon GO without a test under your own conditions.
Bluetooth accessories
Pokémon GO Plus and related accessories require Bluetooth and a supported installation, but Pokémon Support does not guarantee compatibility with all tablet devices in its accessory FAQ. Check current support guidance for the exact tablet, allow Bluetooth permissions, and test pairing and background behavior before planning around the accessory. Bluetooth does not replace GPS or mobile data.

- Outdoor play without carrying a phone: Buy a cellular tablet, verify exact-model location support, and account for data service.
- Mostly home play: Wi-Fi may be practical if the tablet’s location behavior is confirmed and a stable connection is available.
- Maximum portability: Choose iPad mini or another compact tablet with verified location support; consider whether a large phone already meets the need.
- Best value for broad use: A current midrange tablet is more proportionate than a flagship if Pokémon GO is the primary game.
- Creative work or demanding games too: Consider a premium model for those other workloads, not because Pokémon GO requires it.
- Pokémon GO is the only reason to buy: Reconsider a tablet. A phone is usually easier to carry, and the game is designed around smartphone use.
Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Assuming Wi-Fi means GPS, or no GPS: Check location hardware and connectivity independently for the exact SKU.
- Buying an old tablet because it meets an old minimum: A minimum is a compatibility floor, not a recommendation. Confirm that the model can run a current supported operating system and game version. Do not use outdated minimum OS figures as a reason to buy an obsolete device.
- Ignoring the data-plan cost: Add cellular service, case, screen protector, and power bank to the device price when comparing options.
- Choosing the largest screen for walking: A 12- or 13-inch tablet may be unwieldy at outdoor events; larger is not automatically better.
- Assuming an accessory will work: Check current Pokémon Support guidance and test Bluetooth pairing before depending on Pokémon GO Plus.
- Buying a Fire tablet for a simple setup: Fire OS uses Amazon’s app ecosystem, so Pokémon GO may not be available or supported through the straightforward Google Play route. It is a poor fit if you expect a conventional, supported installation.
Setup checklist before an event
- Check the exact tablet model against Niantic’s current supported-device guidance and the relevant App Store or Google Play listing.
- Install the game from the official store, then update the operating system and app.
- Enable location services and grant the permissions the operating system requests for Pokémon GO.
- Test map positioning outdoors and check cellular or hotspot coverage before relying on the tablet at a major event.
- Pair Pokémon GO Plus or another accessory in advance; confirm it stays connected as expected.
- Test battery use under your brightness and connectivity settings, and bring a compatible power bank for long sessions.
- Fit a protective case and screen protector. For children, also set family controls, in-app purchase controls, and data limits, and establish safe rules for walking and interacting with others.
Do not use rooting, jailbreaking, mock-location tools, spoofing, or modified clients as a workaround; they can create account, security, warranty, and compatibility risks.
