No standalone Xbox game marketplace for iPhone has been publicly launched, and Microsoft has not announced a new release date. The “coming soon” claim traces back to a plan that targeted July 2024. Today, iPhone owners can use the Xbox app for shopping and account features, and play supported games through Xbox Cloud Gaming in a browser—but neither is a separate Microsoft app store.
What Microsoft planned—and what is available now
Microsoft’s planned mobile game store was meant to be a Microsoft-controlled place to distribute games on mobile, rather than simply a section of Apple’s App Store. The plan was linked to Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard acquisition and a broader effort to compete with Apple and Google in mobile distribution. In 2023, Microsoft discussed building a store that could rival the existing mobile storefronts, subject to regulatory clearance for the acquisition (Ars Technica).
That proposed store is distinct from two Xbox products iPhone owners can use:
- The Xbox mobile app: Microsoft’s app supports Xbox account and shopping functions. Xbox announced mobile purchasing features in April 2025, including buying games and add-ons, joining Game Pass, and redeeming Perks. These features do not make the app a separate iPhone marketplace (Xbox Wire).
- Xbox Cloud Gaming: Supported games are streamed to an iPhone through a browser. Streaming is not downloading a console or PC game to the phone for local installation. Microsoft’s Xbox mobile page describes both app shopping and mobile cloud play.
- Xbox Remote Play: Where supported by the app and account setup, Remote Play streams from a player’s own Xbox console. It is separate from both the proposed store and Cloud Gaming.
How the promised launch date slipped
In March 2023, Microsoft discussed a mobile store as a future part of its gaming strategy. In May 2024, Xbox president Sarah Bond reportedly said Microsoft was targeting July 2024 for a web-based mobile store (Tom’s Guide). That was a target, not proof that an iPhone marketplace became publicly available.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
In April 2025, Xbox announced shopping features inside its existing mobile app. Reports in December 2025 described store and wishlist features in an Android beta; those reports did not establish that a standalone iPhone store had launched. In April 2026, Windows Central reported that the separate project appeared to have been shelved or deprioritized after leadership changes. That is reporting, not an official cancellation announcement (Windows Central).
Microsoft’s June 2026 Xbox strategy update mentioned evaluating capabilities across mobile, hardware, PC, and streaming, but did not announce a mobile marketplace or a replacement date (Xbox Wire). As of August 18, 2026, Microsoft’s public mobile materials describe shopping through the Xbox app and cloud play, not a separate iPhone game store.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What iPhone users can do today
- Shop for Xbox products: Use the Xbox mobile app for supported game, add-on, and Game Pass transactions. Microsoft also operates an Xbox web storefront.
- Stream games: Use Xbox Cloud Gaming in a supported browser, subject to the service’s current region, account, subscription, game, and network requirements. Microsoft lists iPhone and iPad support beginning with iOS/iPadOS 14.4; check its live requirements before relying on that minimum, since service conditions can change.
- Play from your own console: Use Xbox Remote Play where the current app and account setup support it.
- Install games locally: Download native iPhone games through the App Store or another distribution channel officially available in your region. Buying an Xbox game does not generally provide an iPhone version for local installation.
Cloud play is the relevant option for playing console-style Xbox titles on an iPhone, but it depends on internet quality and service availability. A controller can suit many games, though it cannot improve a weak or congested connection. Microsoft does not publish a confirmed catalog, regional rollout, developer revenue split, or pricing terms for the proposed standalone store in the cited announcements.
Why the iPhone version was complicated
Apple historically required cloud-gaming services to submit games individually for review, rather than allowing one app to present a broad streaming catalog. Apple later changed its rules to permit game-streaming apps, but that did not itself create a Microsoft store or settle its commercial and technical requirements (Engadget).

The European Union’s Digital Markets Act created a distinct route for alternative app marketplaces and other distribution options. Apple’s documentation covers those options and their terms, but the rules are geographically limited; they do not give U.S. iPhone owners the same marketplace choices (Apple’s EU developer documentation).
- United States: EU alternative-marketplace provisions do not apply as a general U.S. iPhone entitlement.
- European Union: Alternative distribution may be legally possible under Apple’s applicable rules, but legal eligibility is not evidence that Microsoft has launched a store.
- Android: Android distribution rules and Microsoft’s product decisions are a separate matter; availability on Android would not establish iPhone availability.
A web store, a companion app, and an alternative app marketplace are also different products. A web store can sell products without being an iOS marketplace, and it does not by itself permit arbitrary native iPhone game installation outside Apple’s distribution rules.

What the planned store might have offered
Microsoft’s stated direction included Xbox content and the possibility of third-party partner games. Its Activision Blizzard King portfolio made mobile distribution strategically relevant, but no definitive launch catalog or commercial terms were confirmed in the cited material. Readers should not assume the store would include every Xbox, PC, or mobile game, or that it would offer particular subscriptions, add-ons, currencies, refund rules, or developer fees.
Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma’s appointment was announced in February 2026, and Microsoft’s announcement notes that Microsoft Gaming was renamed XBOX on April 23, 2026 (Microsoft). Leadership changes provide context for the project’s status, but do not establish a formal cancellation.
