5 Best 4K 120Hz TVs for the ASUS ROG Ally: Compared

The Ally can connect to a 4K/120Hz TV through USB-C DisplayPort, but the adapter matters—and 4K/120Hz output is not the same as 4K/120fps gaming.

The LG C6 OLED is the best all-round 4K/120Hz TV match for an ASUS ROG Ally if you want excellent gaming features, four HDMI 2.1 inputs and OLED contrast. For a bright room or a large screen at a lower price tier, consider the Hisense U8QG or TCL QM8K; for premium OLED picture quality, the Samsung S95F; and for movie-first use, the Sony BRAVIA 8 II.

The Ally can send video to a 4K/120Hz TV through its USB-C DisplayPort 1.4 connection, but it does not have a built-in HDMI port. You need a suitable USB-C-to-HDMI 2.1 adapter or dock, and a TV accepting 4K/120Hz does not mean demanding games will render at native 4K and 120 frames per second. For most Ally owners, the payoff is a flexible living-room screen, VRR and smoother output where the game can use it—not a promise of 4K/120fps gameplay.

Which 4K/120Hz TV is best for the ROG Ally?

TV Best for Panel type Why choose it Main trade-off
LG C6 OLED Best overall OLED Four HDMI 2.1 inputs and broad gaming support OLED is less suited to prolonged static desktop use or a very bright room
Samsung S95F OLED Premium OLED picture QD-OLED Strong HDR color and gaming features No Dolby Vision; its 165Hz ceiling is of limited relevance to the Ally
Hisense U8QG Bright-room value Mini-LED High brightness and gaming features Local dimming can produce blooming around bright objects
TCL QM8K Large-screen mini-LED alternative Mini-LED Bright-screen gaming without requiring a flagship OLED Confirm the exact size and regional specification before purchase
Sony BRAVIA 8 II Movies and mixed use OLED 4K/120Hz support with a movie-first presentation Only two HDMI 2.1 inputs, one shared with eARC

Features and port counts can vary by model size, region and firmware. Verify the exact SKU and its manual before buying, especially if you plan to connect several gaming devices or an eARC soundbar. Sony’s support guidance illustrates why HDMI capabilities need to be checked by model rather than inferred from a brand name: Sony’s model-specific HDMI feature guidance.

Can the ROG Ally use a 4K/120Hz TV?

Yes, with the right connection chain. The original ROG Ally has a USB-C port with DisplayPort 1.4 video output, rather than a conventional HDMI output. ASUS lists the interface in its ROG Ally specifications. The USB-C port also handles power input, so a dock with USB-PD pass-through can let you charge while playing.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Keep three separate concepts in mind:

  • Output signal: the resolution and refresh rate Windows sends to the TV. A compatible adapter and TV may allow 4K/120Hz output.
  • Render resolution: the resolution the game itself draws. Demanding games will commonly need lower settings such as 1080p or 1440p, often with upscaling.
  • Frame rate: how many frames the game actually renders each second. A 120Hz TV cannot turn a 30fps game into a 120fps game.

ASUS lists up to 8.6 TFLOPS for the Ally Z1 Extreme, but that figure is not a guarantee of a particular game’s 4K performance. The Ally’s 9–30W handheld configuration and integrated graphics make lower rendering resolutions more practical in demanding titles. See ASUS’s ROG Ally launch specifications for the published hardware context.

A 4K/120Hz TV still makes sense if it will also serve as a desktop-PC or console display, or if you value a large screen for desktop use, lighter games, emulation, streaming and upscaled play. If you only want demanding Ally games and expect native 4K/120fps, the extra TV capability will not deliver that outcome by itself.

What adapter or dock do you need for 4K/120Hz?

Look for an adapter or dock that explicitly supports all of the following, rather than relying on a vague “8K” label:

  • USB-C input with DisplayPort 1.4 source support
  • HDMI 2.1 output explicitly rated for 4K/120Hz
  • A high-bandwidth HDMI cable suitable for the target mode
  • USB-PD pass-through if you want to charge the Ally while connected
  • VRR or Adaptive-Sync pass-through if external variable refresh is important to you

“8K” printed on a product does not by itself establish that it will provide reliable 4K/120Hz output. Check the exact output mode, bandwidth or DSC requirements, and whether VRR works through the adapter. The full chain is ROG Ally → USB-C adapter or dock → HDMI cable → TV HDMI input; any component limited to HDMI 2.0 or 4K/60Hz can prevent Windows from offering 4K/120Hz.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Do not use the official ASUS ROG Gaming Charger Dock as a 4K/120Hz solution: ASUS identifies it as HDMI 2.0, which is appropriate for uses such as 4K/60Hz, not the required 4K/120Hz output. See the ASUS Ally product information.

What to look for in a TV

  1. Verified 4K/120Hz input. Check which specific HDMI ports support the mode; “HDMI 2.1” branding alone does not tell you every port’s capabilities.
  2. Low input lag and a usable Game Mode. Check measurements at the resolutions and refresh rates you intend to use; do not assume one mode’s latency applies to another.
  3. VRR and ALLM. VRR can help smooth variable frame rates, while ALLM can switch the set to a lower-latency mode. Actual external VRR also depends on the adapter, driver, cable and TV configuration.
  4. Enough HDMI 2.1 ports. Four ports are convenient for several gaming devices. On a set with two, eARC for a soundbar or receiver may use one of them.
  5. Good scaling. The Ally may render at 1080p or 1440p while the TV panel is 4K, so upscaling quality matters.
  6. Room and usage fit. Choose brightness, panel type, size and viewing distance for where the TV will actually be used.
  7. HDR format and ownership terms. Compare the formats you use, warranty coverage, retailer return policy and any burn-in terms before buying.

RTINGS’ 120Hz TV recommendations and gaming-TV recommendations provide current comparison context; its TV comparison tool lets readers inspect model-specific features. Treat lab latency values as tied to the test mode, resolution and conditions in the relevant review.

1. LG C6 OLED: best overall

The C6 is the strongest default recommendation for an Ally owner who wants a TV that is also a capable gaming display for other hardware. LG describes gaming support including 4K/120Hz, HDMI 2.1, VRR, ALLM, HGiG and AMD FreeSync in its gaming TV guide. The C6 is offered in 42-, 48-, 55-, 65-, 77- and 83-inch classes in LG’s 2026 US lineup, making the smaller sizes practical for a desk or bedroom.

LG’s US launch announcement lists C6 launch MSRPs of $1,399 for 42 inches, $1,599 for 48 inches, $1,999 for 55 inches, $2,699 for 65 inches, $3,699 for 77 inches and $5,299 for 83 inches. These are launch prices, not current retailer quotes; check LG’s 2026 OLED lineup announcement and live local listings for the model and price available to you.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Why it fits the Ally

  • Four HDMI 2.1 inputs give more room for a dock, console, gaming PC and eARC-connected audio setup.
  • OLED pixel-level contrast and fast pixel response suit games and films in moderate or dim rooms.
  • Its smaller sizes make it easier to use at closer distances than a large living-room TV.

Who should skip it

Choose a bright mini-LED model if the room is sunlit or the TV will show static Windows interface elements for long periods every day. Static taskbars, game HUDs and desktop layouts can create image-retention or burn-in risk over time; the degree of risk depends on usage, brightness, panel-protection features and warranty terms. Check the exact regional model and current price as well.

2. Samsung S95F OLED: best premium OLED picture

The S95F is the premium alternative for buyers who prioritize QD-OLED color and HDR presentation, and who may also connect a high-end gaming PC. TechRadar identifies support for 4K/165Hz, VRR, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, ALLM and four HDMI 2.1 ports in its gaming TV coverage. RTINGS also includes Samsung’s flagship among its 120Hz TV recommendations.

Samsung does not support Dolby Vision, so buyers who specifically want that HDR format should compare alternatives. The set’s 165Hz mode is also not a reason on its own to choose it for an Ally: the Ally’s practical priorities are reliable 120Hz output, VRR, low latency and good scaling, not routinely rendering demanding games at 165fps.

3. Hisense U8QG: best for bright rooms

The U8QG’s mini-LED design makes it the bright-room pick in this shortlist. TechRadar identifies 4K/144Hz gaming, VRR, ALLM, Dolby Vision gaming and low measured input lag among its features in its 65-inch TV coverage. High sustained brightness and HDR impact can be more useful than OLED’s deepest blacks in a daylight living room.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Mini-LED is not OLED: local dimming can leave visible halos or blooming around bright objects on dark backgrounds, and motion or image processing should not be assumed to match LG or Sony. Hisense model names and specifications vary by country, so confirm that a listing is specifically the US U8QG variant before comparing features.

4. TCL QM8K: best mini-LED alternative

The QM8K is a strong alternative for shoppers seeking a large, bright gaming TV without moving directly to a flagship OLED. RTINGS includes the model in its current TV testing and comparison coverage, and its 120Hz recommendations provide broader context for TCL’s value-oriented options.

Before buying, verify the exact QM8K size and regional SKU, which HDMI inputs support the full gaming signal, and the model’s VRR behavior. High advertised refresh rates may be useful with a suitable PC, but the Ally is more likely to benefit from a robust 120Hz mode and VRR than from a higher maximum number.

5. Sony BRAVIA 8 II: best for movies and mixed use

The BRAVIA 8 II suits buyers who split time between films, streaming and Ally gaming and place a premium on Sony’s image processing and cinematic presentation. It supports 4K/120Hz, but has only two HDMI 2.1 inputs, with one shared with eARC according to Tom’s Guide’s comparison.

Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display
  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

That port layout can be restrictive if you have multiple gaming devices and an eARC soundbar or receiver. Pick another model if connectivity flexibility or gaming features per dollar matters more than movie-first use.

OLED or mini-LED for an Ally setup?

Choose OLED when… Choose mini-LED when…
Deep blacks, pixel-level contrast and fast response are priorities. The room is bright and sustained brightness matters.
The TV is mainly for games, films and streaming, rather than a static desktop all day. You expect long desktop sessions with fixed Windows elements or HUDs.
You often watch from seats off to the side. You want a very large display and can accept some local-dimming blooming.

Neither panel type is automatically best for every room. OLED’s static-image risk is a reason to weigh your usage and warranty, not a claim that burn-in is inevitable. Mini-LED avoids making OLED burn-in the central concern, but blooming and viewing-angle performance vary by set.

How to connect and set up the Ally

  1. Connect the Ally’s USB-C/ROG XG Mobile port to an adapter or dock explicitly rated for 4K/120Hz HDMI output.
  2. Connect the dock to an HDMI input on the TV that the manual identifies as supporting 4K/120Hz, using a high-bandwidth HDMI cable.
  3. Connect USB-C power to the dock if you want to charge while playing.
  4. In Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, select the TV and choose the highest available refresh rate.
  5. In AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, inspect the display settings for available resolution, refresh rate and FreeSync or VRR options.
  6. On the TV, enable its gaming mode and any enhanced HDMI bandwidth or input-signal setting required for that port. Labels differ by manufacturer and firmware; enable ALLM if the TV does not switch automatically.
  7. Test 1080p/120Hz, 1440p/120Hz if available, 4K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz. Then check VRR separately with it enabled and disabled.

The precise menu labels can change with Windows, AMD software and TV firmware. For demanding games, set the game’s render resolution and graphics options separately from Windows’ desktop output resolution. Borderless-windowed and exclusive-fullscreen modes can expose different resolution choices in some games; confirm the selected mode in the game rather than assuming the desktop setting controls rendering.

What to try if 4K/120Hz is missing

  • Try another TV HDMI input; some models reserve full bandwidth for particular ports.
  • Bypass the dock and test a direct USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, or test another dock rated explicitly for 4K/120Hz.
  • Confirm the adapter is not limited to HDMI 2.0 and check whether its 4K/120Hz mode requires DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC.
  • Try another high-bandwidth HDMI cable, reconnect dock power, and temporarily remove USB peripherals.
  • Power on the TV first, then restart the Ally. Try selecting 1080p/120Hz before attempting 4K/120Hz.
  • Update Windows, AMD graphics software, BIOS and dock firmware where applicable.
  • If 4K/120Hz works but VRR does not, troubleshoot VRR as a separate adapter, driver or TV compatibility issue.

When a different display is the better buy

  • Using the official ASUS Gaming Charger Dock: Choose a 4K/60Hz expectation rather than buying a TV specifically for 4K/120Hz through that HDMI 2.0 dock.
  • Prioritizing PC-style performance per dollar: A 1440p/120Hz monitor can reduce the rendering load compared with 4K while retaining a high refresh rate.
  • Keeping the setup portable: A 1080p/120Hz portable monitor better matches the Ally’s internal-display resolution and mobility.
  • Sharing the screen with a desktop PC or eGPU: A premium 4K/144Hz-class TV can be more worthwhile because that separate hardware may use refresh rates beyond the Ally’s practical range.

For the Ally alone, prioritize a verified 4K/120Hz input, reliable VRR, low-latency mode and sensible scaling over a TV’s highest advertised refresh rate. If you want the best balance, choose the LG C6; for bright-room or large-screen mini-LED use, compare the Hisense U8QG and TCL QM8K; for premium OLED, choose the Samsung S95F; and for movie-first mixed use, consider the Sony BRAVIA 8 II. Budget separately for a USB-C-to-HDMI solution whose 4K/120Hz and charging specifications are explicit.
