The download change began rolling out to Xbox Insiders, with wider availability promised later; Microsoft published no speed benchmark. For select supported Ally games, Microsoft says shader preloading can make launches up to 10 times faster—a best-case claim, not a guarantee for every game.
What changed in the Xbox PC app?
Microsoft said it improved the Xbox PC app’s download tool to make better use of a PC’s internet connection and available bandwidth. The goal is fewer slowdowns and more efficient downloads, particularly on fast connections where the app may not have been using all available bandwidth.
This is an underlying download optimization, not a new download mode or a published speed tier. Microsoft did not provide a percentage improvement, minimum internet speed, or guaranteed rate. Actual results still depend on factors such as your ISP, Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, other network traffic, the destination drive, the PC and Microsoft’s servers. The announcement did not identify an Xbox app version or publish a manual setting to enable the change.
Rollout and what users need to do
At announcement, the optimization was rolling out to Xbox Insiders first; Microsoft said wider availability would follow. It was not available to everyone on October 30, 2025. Microsoft described it as an app-side rollout and gave no separate switch or troubleshooting command. Insiders received it through the rollout; other users had to wait for general availability. Xbox links users seeking early access to the Xbox Insider Program support page. Joining is not necessary for users who prefer stable releases.

If downloads still seem slow
These are general checks, not steps Microsoft identified as a way to activate the October optimization:
- Try Ethernet or a strong 5GHz or 6GHz Wi-Fi connection.
- Pause other large downloads and streaming activity on your network.
- Check that the destination drive has enough free space and is not heavily occupied.
- Restart the Xbox app and retry the download.
- Check for Windows and Xbox app updates.
None of these steps guarantees a higher download rate, and they do not confirm that the rollout has reached your app.
What is Advanced Shader Delivery?
Shaders help translate a game’s visual effects and materials into instructions a graphics processor can handle. In some PC games, preparing shaders when a game first starts or during early play can add a wait or cause stutter. Advanced Shader Delivery moves supported shader data into the game-download process, with the aim of reducing that work at first launch.
Microsoft says select supported games can launch up to 10 times faster, run more smoothly and use less battery during first play. The “up to 10 times” figure is Microsoft’s claim, not a published average: its announcement includes no test method, comparison hardware, baseline launch times, frame-time charts or battery measurements. It is not a frame-rate promise, and shader delivery does not remedy unrelated limits such as demanding graphics settings, thermal throttling or driver problems.

The announcement says supported shaders are preloaded during a game download, but gives no setup guide or user-facing toggle. Eligible downloads are intended to handle the process automatically when both the title and device are supported. Microsoft did not establish that every storefront version is covered or that already-installed games are always processed retroactively; there is no published manual way to force delivery.

Shader data may add download or storage requirements, but Microsoft did not quantify any overhead. The most noticeable difference may be during first launch, while later starts may already benefit from cached shaders. Advanced Shader Delivery is separate from whether a game is optimized for handheld controls, screen size, thermals or battery life. The October announcement also does not establish support across every PC storefront.
Which devices support Advanced Shader Delivery?
Microsoft named two supported devices at the October 2025 announcement: ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. That does not establish support for older ROG Ally models, all Windows handhelds or every PC.
The current Xbox product page, checked August 18, 2026, lists these hardware differences. These are current product-page specifications, not details from the October announcement:

How the Handheld Compatibility Program helps
The update added handheld compatibility information to game product pages on Windows devices. Supported Xbox handhelds also get a handheld-compatible channel on Home. A notice can appear before purchase or installation when a game is not currently marked Handheld Optimized.

That warning is about the expected handheld experience, not a universal declaration that a game will not run. A playable game may lack the Handheld Optimized label, and a title’s status can change as compatibility information is updated. The label is also distinct from Steam Deck verification, general Windows compatibility and console versions.

Play Anywhere availability is separate from Advanced Shader Delivery: owning a Play Anywhere title does not by itself mean that the game receives shader preloading.
Is Advanced Shader Delivery a reason to buy an Xbox Ally?
It can add value for someone who wants Xbox integration on a handheld and regularly plays titles supported by Advanced Shader Delivery. But the feature is limited by device and game support, and its strongest launch-speed figure is an attributed “up to” claim rather than an independently described benchmark. It does not establish that an Ally is faster than every competing handheld.
The PC-app download optimization is a weaker buying reason: it is not exclusive to an Ally, and Microsoft published no measured improvement. Consider the Ally for its wider handheld experience and the games and services you intend to use, not on the expectation of a universal download or performance boost. The current product page describes the two models and access to Xbox and other PC storefronts, but that broader storefront access should not be taken as confirmation that Advanced Shader Delivery works with every storefront.
