Sony canceled its planned PlayStation Network (PSN) account-linking rollout for Helldivers 2 on Steam on May 6, 2024. The change would have required new Steam players to link accounts from that date, with existing players facing sign-in prompts from May 30 and a June 4 deadline. Sony said the update “will not be moving forward,” so players did not have to meet those canceled deadlines.
What Sony announced—and what it canceled
When Helldivers 2 launched on PC and PS5 on February 8, 2024, account linking was temporarily optional. Sony said launch technical issues had prevented enforcement of the planned Steam-to-PSN link. In a May 2 announcement, it said linking would become mandatory for Steam players on a schedule:
- New Steam players: linking to PSN would be required beginning May 6, 2024.
- Existing Steam players: mandatory login prompts would begin May 30, with accounts required to be linked by June 4.
On May 6, Sony reversed course after hearing player feedback and said the update “will not be moving forward.” The company said it was still evaluating what was best for PC players. The announced rollout was canceled; this was not a case of the requirement being enforced for all existing players and then removed. Sony’s announcement and cancellation on Steam set out both the original schedule and its reversal.
Why PC players objected
The plan landed after players had bought the Steam version while linking was optional. For some, a new account requirement after purchase felt like a change to the terms of playing a game they already owned. Others objected to needing a separate publisher-network account for a Steam purchase. The concern was especially consequential for players in places where PSN registration or access was unavailable or restricted: a free account is not necessarily an accessible account everywhere.

The timing and regional-access concern help explain why the dispute went beyond ordinary resistance to another login screen. Sony’s cancellation statement confirms that it heard player feedback, but it does not quantify review changes, refunds, delistings, or sales effects. Claims about the number of affected countries or the scale of those effects need separate evidence; Sony’s statement alone does not establish them.
Sony’s stated reason for linking accounts
Sony said linking would help protect players from griefing and abuse, support moderation and bans, and provide a route for banned players to appeal. That is the company’s stated rationale, not independent proof that mandatory PSN linking was the only way to achieve those aims.

The announcement did not resolve PC players’ practical questions: why the link had been optional at launch, what accommodations would apply where PSN was not available, or how the proposed policy related to Steam’s own account and moderation systems. Nor did Sony say that the canceled rollout applied to every PlayStation game on PC.
What PC players need to do
Under the canceled 2024 schedule, existing Steam players did not need to link a PSN account by June 4, and new players did not have to follow the planned May 6 rollout. Do not create or link a PSN account solely because of that canceled announcement. If the game currently displays an account prompt, check the latest guidance from PlayStation, Arrowhead, or Steam support rather than assuming the 2024 policy has returned.

Keep the account and subscription requirements separate:
- Steam account: used to buy and play the Steam version.
- PSN account: the subject of Sony’s canceled mandatory-linking plan for Helldivers 2 on Steam.
- PlayStation Plus: Sony lists this as required for online play on PlayStation consoles; it is not a normal subscription requirement for the Steam version.
Sony describes PC account-linking rules as title-specific, and says linking or unlinking options can vary by game. A voluntary link or sign-in screen in one PC game does not establish a universal policy. See PlayStation’s PC sign-in and account-linking guidance.

PC and PS5 play are separate from the account dispute
Helldivers 2 remains an online game for PC and PS5, with cross-play between the platforms and parties of up to four players, according to PlayStation’s game support page. That page distinguishes console online-play requirements from PC play. The official game page lists the game for PC and PS5; buyers should check their local storefront for current availability and terms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the reversal does—and does not—mean
- It does mean Sony canceled the announced PSN-linking rollout for Helldivers 2 on Steam in May 2024.
- It does not mean Sony permanently abandoned account linking for every PlayStation PC release. PlayStation’s current guidance says requirements vary by game; for example, its PC support hub describes linking as optional for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. See PlayStation gaming on PC support.
- It does not mean PSN accounts and PlayStation Plus are the same thing. A PSN account is an account; PlayStation Plus is a paid console subscription service.
- It does not establish identical storefront access or PSN availability in every country, or rule out a future policy change. Check current official notices for the game and your region.
Why the episode mattered beyond one login screen
The dispute exposed a tension in Sony’s PC strategy. A shared account and moderation system may serve the publisher’s cross-platform goals, while Steam buyers may expect a PC purchase not to acquire a new console-network condition after launch. For an online game, extra sign-up steps can create friction; introducing them after release can also weaken trust in future policy announcements. Those are implications of the dispute, not a confirmed account of Sony’s motive. Sony’s public explanation focused on safety, moderation, bans, and appeals, and its May 6 statement did not promise a single account rule for later PC releases.
