1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteVR calibration is a set of separate adjustments, not one universal button: fit the headset, align its lenses, set the floor and play area, then check tracking and any game-specific height settings. Work through those layers in that order. The names and locations of settings vary by headset and software version, so use the platform-specific paths below where available.
Before you calibrate: prepare the room and equipment
Choose whether you will play seated, standing, or room-scale before setting up. A smaller, clear area with a correctly inset boundary is safer than a larger area filled with obstacles.
- Move furniture, pets, cables, fragile objects, and trip hazards out of the play space. Check above you for ceiling fans or other hazards.
- Use stable, diffuse lighting. Avoid direct sunlight on headset cameras or lenses, and reduce glare from mirrors or reflective floors. Inside-out tracking can also struggle in visually featureless surroundings.
- Clean the lenses and tracking cameras using the headset maker’s recommended method. Use a clean microfiber lens cloth for lenses.
- Charge the headset and controllers, and install pending headset, controller, console, PC-runtime, and graphics-driver updates before diagnosing tracking.
- For PC VR, check that the headset and its USB, DisplayPort, or Wi-Fi connection are recognized before opening the room-setup process.
Lighting and reflections affect tracking; they are different from comfort preferences such as how much space you want. A boundary is a warning system, not a physical barrier.
Step 1: fit the headset before adjusting its settings
- Loosen the strap, place the facial interface evenly against your face, then position the rear strap so the headset is supported rather than hanging from your nose.
- Tilt the headset until the central display looks sharp. Tighten the strap only enough to prevent slipping; excessive pressure can cause discomfort or headaches.
- If your headset has an eye-relief adjustment, set it so your eyes sit comfortably at the intended distance from the lenses. If you wear glasses, check clearance and use a glasses-compatible spacer or prescription inserts where appropriate.
- Recheck the image after changing the strap or headset angle. A blurry image is often an alignment or fit issue, not a display defect.
Step 2: adjust lens spacing or IPD
IPD, or interpupillary distance, is the distance between the centers of your pupils. Headsets may offer a physical lens-spacing dial or slider, stepped lens positions, or software guidance. A displayed IPD value is a guide, not a guarantee of clear vision; headset optics differ, and software adjustment cannot compensate for every physical mismatch.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Start near the middle lens position and look at small, high-contrast text or a fine interface.
- Move the lenses gradually until the image looks clearest and feels comfortable. If possible, briefly close one eye at a time to check each view.
- After settling on a position, refit the strap and check again: headset angle can change optical alignment.
- If the image is still blurry, check for smudges, poor fit, incorrect eye relief, or glasses touching the headset before assuming IPD is the cause.
Step 3: set the floor height
Floor calibration sets the system’s vertical reference. It is not the same as recentering, which resets your current forward direction or origin, and it may not override a game’s own height setting.
- Stand naturally in the intended play area and start the headset’s floor, room, or environment setup.
- When prompted, place the controller or other virtual reference point at the real floor as directed. Keep it still while the system measures.
- Check that the virtual floor aligns with the physical one by reaching toward the floor or comparing a virtual object’s height with a real object.
- Rerun floor setup if the virtual floor is too high or low. If only one game has the wrong height, check that game’s seated offset or height calibration first.
SteamVR floor setup
In SteamVR, choose SteamVR > Run Room Setup. Steam also documents a quick calibration path at Settings > Developer > Room and Tracking. During floor calibration, Steam advises placing controllers with triggers facing upward to reduce wobble. If a reflective floor affects the measurement, use a flat, non-reflective surface beneath the controllers. Moving a base station can change the measured floor position, so rerun Room Setup after moving one; let firmware updates finish without unplugging or interrupting devices. See SteamVR’s room-setup troubleshooting instructions.

Step 4: create a safe play area
After confirming the floor, choose the mode that matches the session:
- Seated: Useful for cockpit or simulator games, limited space, accessibility needs, or reduced movement.
- Standing: For play while standing with limited movement.
- Room-scale: For titles involving physical movement, reaching, or turning; requires a mapped area with safe clearance.
- Choose the mode in the headset’s boundary, play-area, or room-setup flow. Menu wording varies by platform and software version.
- Draw the boundary several inches inside walls, furniture, and other hard obstacles. Allow room for controller swings as well as foot movement.
- Keep the usable area clear of stairs, glass, sharp corners, hot surfaces, and anything that could be struck.
- Walk around the perimeter using passthrough or the headset’s environment view, then redraw the boundary if furniture or lighting changes.
Sony specifies a minimum room-scale play area of 6 ft 7 in × 6 ft 7 in (about 2 m × 2 m) for PS VR2 room-scale games and apps; users must define a Play Area before using room-scale content. This requirement applies to PS VR2 room-scale use, not every headset. See Sony’s PS VR2 product information. PS VR2 titles can support seated or standing play depending on the game; check the title’s VR Play Style options at Sony’s PS VR2 games page.

PS VR2 setup
On PS5, Sony’s setup instructions place Play Area and related headset adjustments under Settings > Accessories > PlayStation VR2. Select Set Play Area to configure the room boundary. The same settings area includes headset adjustment, eye-tracking adjustment, and tracking-camera calibration options. Follow Sony’s PS VR2 setup guide; available labels may vary with system software.
Step 5: recenter your view
- Sit or stand in the position you intend to use and face the direction that should count as forward.
- Hold the headset’s or controller’s recenter control until the view resets, keeping your head still during the reset.
- Check the virtual horizon or menu orientation and recenter again if it remains rotated.
Recenter changes orientation or the current user origin; it does not necessarily correct floor height or redraw a boundary. In PS VR2 cinematic mode, Sony says to press and hold the PS VR2 Sense controller’s options button to reposition the screen. See Sony’s PS VR2 troubleshooting guide.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Step 6: check controllers and tracking
- Confirm both controllers are paired and assigned correctly, charged, and secure with their wrist straps.
- Keep tracking cameras, controller markers, rings, or LEDs visible where the system relies on them; do not cover them.
- Test pointing, gripping, trigger presses, and virtual hand position in the system menu before launching a game.
- If one controller alone is offset, troubleshoot its pairing, charge, and visibility before rebuilding the entire room setup. If the room coordinate system is wrong across devices, rerun room setup.
Inside-out tracking uses cameras on the headset, so stable lighting, visible surroundings, clean cameras, and limited reflections matter. Base-station tracking requires correctly placed external stations; moving a station can invalidate room measurements. For either system, pause if tracking becomes unreliable, move to a safe position, check the environment and hardware visibility, then restart tracking or redo room setup as appropriate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 7: calibrate eye tracking and game-specific height
PS VR2 eye tracking
Eye tracking is headset-specific and may only be used by compatible software. On PS5, open Settings > Accessories > PlayStation VR2, enable eye tracking, and select the eye-tracking adjustment option if accuracy is poor. Follow the on-screen prompts while wearing the headset normally. Fit, eye relief, glasses or reflective lenses, eyelashes, makeup, occlusion, lighting, and application support can affect results. Sony describes this as a separate setting in its PS VR2 setup guidance.

Game height and play style
Games may use system height, ask for their own standing or seated calibration, or apply a seated offset. If the headset menus and several games share the same height error, revisit floor calibration. If only one title is affected, look in that game’s calibration, accessibility, or play-style settings rather than rebuilding the system boundary.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely causes | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Blurry image | Fit, lens cleanliness, lens spacing, or eye relief | Clean lenses, refit and tilt the headset, then adjust lens spacing. |
| Virtual floor too high or low | Floor measurement failed, controller moved, or base station moved | Rerun floor calibration; for SteamVR use Room Setup and check station placement. |
| View drifts or loses position | Lighting changes, reflections, covered or dirty cameras, sparse surroundings, or software issue | Pause safely, check camera visibility and lighting, then restart tracking or the headset. |
| Boundary is wrong or keeps appearing | Room layout changed, stale map, or tracking is unreliable | Check that tracking is enabled and redraw the boundary. |
| One controller is offset | Pairing, charge, or sensor occlusion | Test it in the system menu, then check pairing, charge, and sensor visibility. |
| Only one game places you too high or low | Game-level height or seated offset | Adjust that title’s own calibration or play-style settings. |
| PS VR2 cinematic screen is misplaced | Screen position needs resetting | Hold the options button on the PS VR2 Sense controller. |
For Quest headsets, tracking can be disabled or lost, and boundary data may need to be cleared or recreated. Check the headset’s live settings for tracking and boundary options; menu labels can change with software versions. Meta’s available tracking support discussion recommends checking tracking and recreating the boundary when needed. Meta’s Passthrough Camera API documentation is for developer functionality on Quest 3 and Quest 3S, not the consumer boundary-calibration workflow: Meta developer documentation.
When to update, reset, or contact support
Use the least disruptive step that matches the symptom:
Quick Recap
- Refit the headset and clean lenses or tracking cameras.
- Recenter if the view is rotated; rerun floor calibration if the vertical reference is wrong.
- Redraw the boundary if the room map is stale or the layout changed.
- Restart the headset and controllers, then install applicable updates.
- For a persistent issue across rooms and applications, consult the manufacturer’s symptom-specific support page or contact support. For PS VR2, Sony separates play-area, movement-tracking, camera, and image problems in its troubleshooting guide.
- Consider a factory reset only as a last software step, after checking the manufacturer’s instructions and understanding what data or settings may be lost.
