The verdict was cautiously positive: the interface looked clean and approachable, but the store, discovery features, and wider game ecosystem still felt unfinished. This is archival launch coverage, not a review of a console that remains supported today.
What the original hands-on showed
Rob Jackson’s Phandroid hands-on, published March 29, 2013, covered a retail-ready OUYA rather than the earlier developer hardware. It moved from the physical package to the first boot and then through the launcher and software areas.
The video and accompanying coverage show the console and wireless controller, the setup process, and a first-run detail specific to those units: an inscription listing Kickstarter backers, including GameFans.com. That engraving should not be assumed to appear on every later retail console. The hands-on does not establish a definitive inventory of every item in the package, so it is better not to infer accessories beyond what it visibly documents.
Initial setup involved connecting the console to a display and network, then pairing the controller over Bluetooth. Jackson reported that Wi-Fi could make setup difficult and that controller pairing could take time. Those are observations from this launch-unit experience, not evidence of a universal defect; the article gives no firmware number, router details, or failure-rate data.

What OUYA promised at launch
OUYA was presented as a low-cost, Android-based console for the television, with an open developer model and games that included a free-to-try component. OUYA’s March 2013 announcement set an intended U.S., Canadian, and U.K. retail launch date of June 4, 2013, at $99.99. The company also promoted NVIDIA Tegra 3 hardware and 1080p output. Contemporary reporting put an additional controller at $49.99.
Those dates need separating: early backers were receiving preview units when the Phandroid piece appeared; June 4 was the announced retail date; broad retail availability was later reported on June 25. OUYA’s June launch announcement said the catalog had more than 170 games and the platform had more than 17,000 registered developers. These were company-reported launch figures, not independent measures of active developers, game quality, or lasting library depth. The announcements are available from OUYA’s March launch notice and its June retail announcement.
Hardware context also matters when judging the bargain. Contemporary specifications and teardown reporting identify a Tegra 3 system with 1GB RAM and 8GB of storage; that modest capacity and mobile-class platform suited lightweight Android games better than a direct contest with full-size consoles. How the four-part interface worked
Play
Play was the place for games installed or downloaded to the console. It offered a direct route from the home interface to the games themselves.

Discover combined store browsing and promotion. It presented featured titles, categories and genres, new or upcoming developers, and the Sandbox, where submitted software could appear before receiving greater prominence. The structure was understandable, but the hands-on found overlapping categories and limited game-page interaction. Thumbnails could not be enlarged into full-resolution views, and recommendations tied to friends were largely absent.
Build
Build was aimed at developers, but it also exposed a browser, file manager, and tools for sideloading Android applications. This openness was a meaningful difference from a tightly controlled console storefront: it gave hobbyists room to experiment, while leaving users responsible for compatibility and troubleshooting. Sideloading did not guarantee that an Android app would work with OUYA’s controls, display resolution, graphics support, or legacy operating system.

Manage
Manage held settings and administrative controls. Taken together, the four sections gave the launcher a clear visual logic; the review’s reservation was less about finding one’s way around than about what the store and social layer could do once there.
What impressed the reviewer—and what did not
The strongest praise concerned presentation. Jackson found the physical design attractive and improved over the developer hardware, and described a clean menu structure and pleasant first-boot experience. The route from unboxing to browsing games looked relatively simple. For a small, inexpensive console built around an open Android platform, that first impression was persuasive.
The weaker part was discovery. The store’s categories could overlap, game listings offered little opportunity to inspect artwork at a larger size, and social features did not provide meaningful friend-based recommendations. The Sandbox looked more like a holding area for submitted apps than a polished curation system. Openness widened the door for experimentation, but the review showed how that could leave a less coherent browsing experience.

The hands-on was a software tour, not a comprehensive console test. It did not establish long-term reliability, performance across a broad game sample, controller durability or battery life, heat and noise, media-app quality, online multiplayer, store growth, purchase reliability, or whether sideloaded apps worked consistently. Nor did it demonstrate that the catalog could match the depth or polish of established console libraries. Its positive interface impressions should not be mistaken for proof of a mature ecosystem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the first look means in hindsight
At launch, OUYA’s appeal depended on the audience. A budget-conscious player interested in short-form or indie games, a developer exploring TV distribution, or a hobbyist who valued sideloading could find the experiment compelling. The same device was a weaker fit for someone expecting a broad, polished library, a complete living-room media platform, or dependable long-term online services.
The distinction between hardware and service is decisive today. OUYA’s official storefront, accounts, and online services shut down on June 25, 2019, as reported by TechCrunch. A working console is therefore not the same thing as a working OUYA ecosystem: software dependent on online purchase or account validation may fail, and sideloading does not solve compatibility automatically.

In 2013, this was a fair first look at an attractive interface attached to an ambitious, visibly unfinished platform. Read now, it is most valuable as a snapshot of the promise: accessible hardware and an unusually open approach, paired with discovery and ecosystem questions the video could not settle.
Is an OUYA worth buying now?
Only for a collector, restoration project, or hobbyist who understands that official online functionality is unavailable. It should not be treated as a supported modern game console. Used units may lack the original controller or include mismatched accessories, and a successful sideload is no guarantee that an app will function properly on the hardware.
