Potato PC vs. VALORANT: Can Your Old Computer Run It?

Many old PCs can run VALORANT, but meeting Riot’s minimum tier targets about 30 FPS—not a guaranteed smooth match. Check your exact hardware and Vanguard settings first.

Often, yes—but “runs” can mean anything from barely reaching Riot’s 30-FPS minimum tier to holding a stable 60 FPS. Check your exact CPU, graphics chip, RAM, Windows version and Vanguard security settings before deciding. On an old PC, launch compatibility can matter as much as graphics power.

VALORANT’s PC requirements, by performance target

Riot lists three hardware tiers. They are reference points, not a guarantee that every PC with those parts will produce the same results; resolution, laptop cooling, memory configuration, drivers and background activity all affect performance. Riot’s current specifications list the following:

Target CPU Graphics Other requirements
30 FPS (minimum tier) Intel Core i3-540 or AMD Athlon 200GE Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon R5 220 4 GB RAM; DirectX 11; CPU support for SSE 4.2 or AVX; Windows 10 64-bit, build 19041 or later, or Windows 11 64-bit. Riot specifies at least 1 GB VRAM for a discrete GPU.
60 FPS (recommended tier) Intel Core i3-4150 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 or AMD Radeon R7 240 Riot does not state a separate RAM or operating-system value for this tier on its specifications page.
144+ FPS (high-end tier) Intel Core i5-9400F at 2.90 GHz or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti, AMD Radeon R7 370 or Intel Arc A310 Riot does not state a separate RAM or operating-system value for this tier on its specifications page.

Riot also says Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot. Its separate support guidance describes additional Vanguard restrictions that can apply to other configurations, so check the current guidance if the game reports a security error.

What “handle the game” means in practice

Launching is not the same as playing well

A game that opens has passed only the first test. For ordinary play, a reasonably stable 60 FPS is a more useful baseline than a machine that briefly reaches that number but repeatedly stutters. Riot’s minimum tier is associated with 30 FPS; that can be playable if frame delivery is steady, but it is not the same experience as 60 FPS.

Watch for drops, not just the FPS counter

Average FPS does not show how smooth a match feels. A system reporting 60 FPS that falls to 20 during fights can feel worse than one holding a steady 45. Heat-related throttling, limited memory, background tasks and inconsistent frame times can all contribute. A 144 Hz monitor can display a high refresh rate, but the PC needs to render near 144 FPS consistently to make full use of it.

Check your PC before changing settings

Find the CPU, RAM and Windows version

  1. Press Windows + I, then open System > About. Note the processor, installed RAM, system type and Windows edition and version.
  2. For more detail, press Windows + R, type msinfo32 and press Enter. Check Processor, Installed Physical Memory, OS Name, Version, BIOS Mode and Secure Boot State.

Identify the exact graphics chip

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, choose Performance, then inspect each GPU entry. Record the exact model and dedicated or shared memory.
  2. Alternatively, press Windows + R, type dxdiag and press Enter. Check the Display tabs for the graphics model, driver version and DirectX information.

“Intel graphics” or “NVIDIA graphics” is not specific enough: products within each family span many generations and performance levels. Compare the exact model with Riot’s examples rather than assuming that any dedicated GPU is faster than any integrated one.

Check TPM and Secure Boot when relevant

  1. To inspect TPM, press Windows + R, enter tpm.msc and check whether a TPM is present and ready; where shown, confirm the specification version is 2.0.
  2. In msinfo32, check that BIOS Mode says UEFI and Secure Boot State says On if you are checking a Windows 11 setup.

Secure Boot State: Off can mean the feature is available but disabled; Unsupported can mean the firmware or hardware does not support it. A BIOS Mode of Legacy means Windows is not currently booting through UEFI. Do not switch Legacy/CSM, UEFI or Secure Boot settings at random: the change can make Windows fail to boot.

  • Processor: Does it support SSE 4.2 or AVX, and is it in the vicinity of Riot’s listed minimum CPU class?
  • Graphics: Does the GPU support DirectX 11 and meet at least the listed minimum class?
  • Memory: Is there at least 4 GB of RAM? That meets Riot’s listed minimum, but 8 GB is a more practical target.
  • Security settings: If using Windows 11, are TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot available and enabled? If Vanguard reports a restriction on another setup, follow Riot’s guidance for that specific error.

If the PC clears these checks, trying the game at low settings is reasonable. Passing them still does not promise a particular FPS, especially on a laptop or an older system near the minimum tier.

Can integrated graphics run VALORANT?

Some can: Riot lists Intel HD 4000 as a minimum-tier example. That does not make every Intel HD, UHD or AMD integrated GPU equivalent. Performance depends on the exact processor and graphics generation, cooling, power limits and RAM configuration.

  • Integrated graphics use system memory, so dual-channel RAM can help when the platform supports it.
  • Four gigabytes of total RAM leaves little headroom for Windows and other tasks.
  • Laptop power and thermal limits can reduce sustained performance, even when a chip’s model name looks adequate.
  • Reducing resolution may help a graphics-limited machine, but very low resolution can make visual details harder to read.

Without the exact CPU, GPU, memory configuration and laptop model, a precise FPS estimate would be unreliable. Treat any benchmark for another machine as specific to that tested configuration, not a promise for yours.

Setting Starting point
Display mode Fullscreen
Resolution Native resolution first; if needed, try 1600×900 or 1280×720
Material, Texture, Detail and UI Quality Low
Vignette Off
VSync Off for lower latency, unless tearing is unacceptable
Anti-Aliasing None or the lowest available option
Anisotropic Filtering 1x or low
Improve Clarity, Bloom, Distortion and Cast Shadows Off initially
Multithreaded Rendering Test both on and off; it may help some systems but is not guaranteed to help every old PC

Cap FPS at a level the machine can sustain rather than chasing unstable peaks. Close browsers, launchers, recording software, overlays and unnecessary background applications. On a laptop, play plugged in and select its performance power mode. Lower settings can reduce graphics load, but they cannot fix an incompatible CPU instruction set, a Vanguard restriction, severe thermal throttling or an unsupported Windows installation. Avoid unofficial “FPS booster” tools, registry cleaners and aggressive debloat scripts.

Which upgrades can help an old PC?

RAM: useful when memory is the constraint

Riot’s minimum is 4 GB, but 8 GB is a more realistic baseline for VALORANT on an older Windows PC. Sixteen gigabytes is useful if you stream, record, keep a browser open or multitask. More RAM is not a universal FPS fix: it matters most when the system is short on memory, paging heavily to disk, or using integrated graphics that benefit from dual-channel operation. Check the machine’s maximum capacity, whether memory is soldered, and the required DIMM or SODIMM type before buying.

SSD: better responsiveness, not a guaranteed FPS boost

Moving from a hard drive to an SSD can improve Windows responsiveness, boot and launch times, loading and updates; it may also reduce some asset-loading hitches. It generally will not turn a GPU-limited 25 FPS system into a 60 FPS one. Confirm the computer supports the drive’s interface and form factor.

Graphics card: only if the rest of the PC can support it

A GPU upgrade is worth considering when graphics performance is the bottleneck and the CPU, motherboard, power supply, case clearance and cooling are suitable. An old CPU, proprietary office-PC power supply or lack of PCIe space can make a cheap card a poor investment. A dedicated GPU is not automatically faster than a newer integrated one.

When replacing the computer makes more sense

Consider a replacement if the machine needs several major parts, cannot meet the required security configuration, lacks SSE 4.2 or AVX, or has serious thermal, storage or motherboard problems. Look for a 64-bit Windows-capable PC with an SSD, at least 8 GB RAM (16 GB is more useful for longevity), UEFI and TPM 2.0 capability if it will use Windows 11, and CPU and graphics comfortably above Riot’s minimum tier. For used or refurbished machines, include the return policy and warranty in the comparison.

Vanguard, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot problems

TPM and Secure Boot are not blanket requirements for every VALORANT PC in the same way. Riot’s specification page specifically calls them out for Windows 11; Riot’s support documentation also describes Vanguard restrictions and configurations where TPM may be required on Windows 10. Enforcement can change, so use the current Riot support guidance for the error on your screen.

Secure Boot relies on UEFI firmware. A Windows installation booting in Legacy/CSM mode commonly uses an MBR partition layout, while UEFI installations generally use GPT. A PC may support Secure Boot while it is disabled, or may be configured to boot in Legacy mode. Changing firmware mode or partition setup is not a graphics tweak: an incorrect change can prevent Windows from starting.

  1. Back up important files before any firmware or partition changes.
  2. Check BIOS Mode and Secure Boot State in msinfo32.
  3. Check the system disk’s partition style in Disk Management, then consult the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Use Riot’s TPM 2.0 guide, its Vanguard restrictions guide and Microsoft’s Secure Boot guidance before changing settings.

If Windows stops booting after a change, return to firmware setup and restore the prior boot configuration if you can do so safely; consult the manufacturer rather than repeatedly toggling settings blindly.

If VALORANT will not launch

Work through basic software checks before treating an apparent launch issue as a graphics problem:

  1. Restart the PC.
  2. Install pending Windows updates, then install a graphics driver from Intel, AMD, NVIDIA or the PC manufacturer.
  3. Note any Vanguard error code beginning with VAN; use Riot’s instructions for that specific code rather than assuming every code has the same fix.
  4. If on Windows 11, check TPM 2.0, UEFI and Secure Boot. Review Riot’s restrictions guidance for other platform-security messages.
  5. Close or remove conflicting overlays, monitoring utilities and other low-level tools; a clean boot can help identify background-software conflicts.
  6. If the issue remains, follow Riot’s launch-crash troubleshooting, which covers steps such as clearing local cache, checking firewall exceptions and reinstalling Vanguard or the game.
  7. Contact Riot Support if the error persists after following its relevant instructions.

Is cloud gaming or a virtual machine a workaround?

Do not count on it as a supported fallback for a weak PC. Riot’s support specifications say VALORANT does not support cloud gaming or virtual machines.

Verdict by PC condition

Likely worth trying

A 64-bit supported Windows installation, compatible CPU, DirectX 11 graphics at or above Riot’s minimum class, and at least 4 GB RAM make a trial plausible. Eight gigabytes, an SSD and no major overheating make the practical outlook better. Start at low settings and aim for stable 30–60 FPS rather than assuming 144 FPS.

Borderline

A machine with only 4 GB RAM, shared graphics, a mechanical drive, single-channel memory, a weak dual-core processor or frequent thermal throttling may launch but stutter, load slowly or dip during fights. Test before buying parts; upgrade the specific bottleneck rather than guessing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Not worth forcing

A 32-bit Windows installation, unsupported Windows build, CPU without SSE 4.2 or AVX, graphics hardware without DirectX 11 support, unavailable Windows 11 security features where required, serious hardware instability, or an unsupported virtualized setup points toward replacement rather than settings tweaks.
