Yes—some LG TVs can stream supported Call of Duty games through the Xbox app without an Xbox console. The app arrived on supported LG Smart TVs on April 24, 2025, and runs games from Microsoft’s cloud rather than installing them on the TV. Compatibility is limited to select models, and access to a specific game depends on its current cloud availability, your region and Game Pass plan.
Check these requirements before subscribing
- Compatible TV: A select LG model with webOS 24 or newer, or an eligible 2022 or 2023 model updated to software version 23.20.01 or later.
- Xbox app: The app must be available for your model and region through the LG Gaming Portal.
- Game access: The particular Call of Duty title must currently be playable from the cloud in your region and eligible under your plan.
- Accounts: A Microsoft/Xbox account is required; Call of Duty may also require an Activision account linked to it.
- Controller: Use a compatible Xbox, PlayStation or other supported controller. The TV remote is not a substitute for a conventional game controller.
- Internet: Xbox lists 20 Mbps download speed and wired Ethernet or 5GHz Wi-Fi for TV cloud gaming. That speed is a listed requirement, not a guarantee of low latency.
Xbox and LG announced the partnership on January 6, 2025; LG announced the app’s arrival on supported TVs on April 24, 2025. It is an available feature, not a new August 2026 launch. Xbox’s announcement and LG’s launch announcement provide those dates.
Which LG TVs support the Xbox app?
Xbox’s current guidance covers select LG TVs running webOS 24 or newer. Some 2022 and 2023 models can qualify after updating to software version 23.20.01 or later. The listed families include 2022 OLED models and select 2023 OLED, QNED, NanoCell and UHD models. That does not mean every television in those ranges—or every TV with webOS 24—supports the app. Eligibility is model- and market-specific. Check Xbox’s supported TV information against your exact model.
Verify your TV
- In the TV’s settings, find the exact model number and software or webOS version. Menu wording varies by model.
- Install any available TV software update, then restart the television.
- Open the LG Gaming Portal and look for the Xbox app.
- If it is absent, check the model and regional availability against Xbox’s support information. A similar interface or screen size does not establish compatibility.
Which Call of Duty games can you stream?
Activision’s cloud-gaming support information documented Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare III, Warzone and Modern Warfare II. This is not a promise that every game in the franchise—or a newer release—is available on LG TVs. Catalog access changes by region, device, plan and time. Search the live Xbox cloud library for the specific game before subscribing or troubleshooting. Activision’s support page also says players need an Activision account linked to their Xbox account.

Which Game Pass plan do you need?
The original LG launch announcement highlighted Game Pass Ultimate, and Activision’s documented setup also specified Ultimate. Xbox’s current pages list cloud gaming with Essential, Premium and Ultimate, but that does not establish that every Call of Duty game is available on every tier. Check the listing for your chosen game while signed in, including its plan requirement and regional availability. Xbox says some cloud-playable games outside Game Pass may be purchased separately where supported; free-to-play exceptions should not be taken to mean paid Call of Duty releases need no subscription. See Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Game Pass for current service details.
How to start playing
- Update the LG TV and confirm that its exact model and software qualify.
- Open the LG Gaming Portal and launch or install the Xbox app if it is offered.
- Sign in with your Microsoft/Xbox account.
- Pair a compatible controller over Bluetooth or connect it by USB, if supported by your TV and controller. Xbox lists official Xbox and Sony PlayStation controllers among supported options; check its TV requirements rather than assuming every Bluetooth gamepad works.
- Confirm that your Game Pass plan grants access to the title, or that another supported access option is available.
- Search the cloud library for the desired Call of Duty game and launch it.
- If prompted, sign in to or create an Activision account and link it to your Xbox account.
The game streams from Microsoft’s servers; the TV does not download or locally render an Xbox game. A compatible controller is required. LG also documents Bluetooth controller setup for supported webOS TVs at LG’s controller support page.

Fix common problems
The Xbox app is missing
- Install pending TV updates and restart the television.
- Check the exact model number, not just the product family or screen size, against Xbox’s supported-device guidance.
- Confirm that the TV is in a supported region and reopen the LG Gaming Portal.
- If the app remains unavailable, the model, region or rollout may not be supported; its absence alone does not show that the TV is faulty.
The app opens, but the game is unavailable
- Check whether that title is currently cloud-enabled in your region.
- Verify that your plan includes it and that you are signed into the intended Xbox account.
- Remember that a title may leave the catalog or be offered differently across plans, regions and devices.
The controller connects but does not work in the game
- Confirm that the controller is on Xbox’s compatibility list and is not still paired to another device.
- Check for controller firmware updates.
- Disconnect and pair it again; restarting the app may help it recognize the controller.
Call of Duty asks for an Activision login
Sign in to the Activision account associated with your play, then confirm it is linked to the Xbox account used in the app. Activision describes account linking as part of its cloud-play setup.
The picture stutters or controls feel delayed
- Pause downloads and other high-bandwidth streaming on the home network.
- Improve the TV’s 5GHz Wi-Fi signal or use Ethernet if available.
- Restart the TV, router and Xbox app, then test again.
- If the connection is still poor, try at another time to see whether network or service congestion is involved.
Bandwidth and latency are different: meeting the listed 20 Mbps requirement does not guarantee responsive controls. No frame-rate, resolution or input-lag result is guaranteed for an individual setup.

Cloud gaming on an LG TV versus an Xbox console
| Factor | LG TV with Xbox Cloud Gaming | Xbox console |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | No Xbox console is needed; a compatible TV acts as the streaming client. | Requires buying a console. |
| How games run | Streamed from Microsoft’s cloud; no local Xbox game installation on the TV. | Games can be installed and run locally. |
| Internet dependence | High; play depends on a reliable connection and service availability. | Online features need internet, but local games can run offline where supported. |
| Responsiveness | Depends on connection quality, congestion and distance to the cloud service; latency may be noticeable in a shooter. | Local play is generally more predictable than streaming. |
| Access to games | Cloud catalog and plan eligibility vary by region and time. | Offers local installation and broader ownership options, subject to the game and console. |
| Best suited to | Convenience, occasional play and people who already own a compatible LG TV. | Players who prioritize consistent performance, local play and longer-term access. |
Is an LG TV a practical console replacement?
It can be a convenient way to try supported games without buying a console, especially if you already own an eligible TV, subscribe to Game Pass and play casually. It is a weaker fit for competitive Call of Duty, unreliable broadband, or players who want local installation and offline access. A console may also make more sense over time depending on subscription costs and how often you play.
Before buying a TV or subscribing, verify the exact model, region, game listing and plan requirement. Do not buy a new LG television solely for its Gaming Portal if your priority is console-level responsiveness or if the title you want is not currently cloud-playable.
