Portal 2 is the top pick in Collider writer Lucas Kloberdanz-Dyck’s October 2, 2026 ranking of the most intelligent video games. Its puzzles, playful tutorial and witty dialogue make a case for intelligence as more than difficulty: the game teaches players to think with its mechanics. The list is a critic’s selection, not an objective or consensus ranking, and it brings together several kinds of thinking—from logic and long-term planning to philosophical debate and ethical judgment.

What “intelligent” means in this ranking

There is no standard industry score for a game’s intelligence, and this list does not measure IQ or prove that a game improves it. Instead, it uses a broad editorial idea: games can be “smart” through inventive puzzles, complex systems, thoughtful writing, political themes, or the way their mechanics make players consider an idea.

That breadth matters when comparing the titles. A demanding puzzle game asks for a different kind of thinking than a strategy game or a story about moral choices. Big Think likewise considers how games engage with major ideas through interaction, while Game Medium emphasizes challenging puzzles and inventive problem-solving. Neither source supplies a shared scoring system for ranking these different qualities.

The order below follows the Collider article’s ranking and explanations; it is not an independently established measure of which game is smartest.

The 8 most intelligent video games, ranked

1. Portal 2 (2011)

Portal 2 takes the top spot because its central mechanic, teaching design and writing work together. The portal gun lets players rethink the relationship between objects and space, while the tutorial introduces those possibilities through play. Witty dialogue keeps the experience engaging without making intelligence synonymous with difficulty.

2. SpaceChem (2011)

SpaceChem builds intricate process puzzles that invite players to design systems and solve problems one step at a time. Its mechanics have been compared to visual programming: the satisfaction comes from working out a sequence and making the whole process function.

  • Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
  • Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
  • Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer

3. Civilization VI (2016)

Civilization VI puts long-horizon planning at the center of play. Developing a society means making connected decisions about culture, technology, politics and military power. Its appeal is in balancing interlocking systems and anticipating how choices shape what becomes possible later.

4. Planescape: Torment (1999)

Planescape: Torment places role-playing, conversation and philosophical debate ahead of combat as its defining intellectual draw. Its central question, “What can change the nature of man?”, gives the story an explicitly reflective frame and makes dialogue a way to explore ideas rather than simply advance a plot.

5. The Stanley Parable (2013)

The Stanley Parable uses witty writing to examine the relationship between a player’s choices and a narrator’s instructions. It plays with the illusion of choice: how much control does a player have when a story anticipates, frames or responds to their decisions? Big Think also discusses the game as a way to examine the limits of meaningful options in interactive storytelling.

6. Superliminal (2019)

Superliminal turns perspective and optical illusion into puzzle tools. Players manipulate how objects appear in order to solve problems, making spatial perception—not simply finding a hidden switch—the key to progress. Game Medium also includes it among games that test puzzle-solving and inventive thought.

7. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001)

Metal Gear Solid 2 combines stealth with a story about attempts to control behavior and information. The Collider article connects those themes to modern information environments; any claim that the game “predicted” later developments is an interpretation of its relevance, not a verified forecast. Its place on this list rests on the questions its narrative raises, as well as the planning demanded by stealth.

8. Papers, Please (2013)

Papers, Please casts the player as an immigration checkpoint inspector. The repeated work of checking documents puts rules alongside the personal hardships and stories of people seeking entry. Its intelligence lies in making an administrative task a setting for ethical and political reflection.

Sources and ranking context

The eight-game order and its rationales come from Collider’s “The 8 Most Intelligent Video Games Ever Made, Ranked,” written by Lucas Kloberdanz-Dyck and published October 2, 2026: read the article. The list’s descriptions are editorial judgments, not standardized ratings.

For broader context on the idea of intelligent games, see Big Think’s “The 5 most intelligent video games and why you should play them” (December 30, 2018) and Game Medium’s “Most Intelligent Video Games of All Time” (January 13, 2021). They use different emphases, so their examples do not establish a common ranking.
