The right fix depends on where Gunfire Reborn fails: a freeze in solo play points toward local files, settings, overlays, drivers, or system stability; a game that works solo but cannot host or join usually calls for Steam, firewall, or network checks first. Work through the reversible steps below before reinstalling or changing router settings. No single fix is confirmed for every PC or co-op failure.
Start by identifying the failure
Check whether the problem follows one player, one PC, or one network. Ask each player to launch the game and try solo play; then swap who hosts. Note whether the freeze happens before the menu, when starting a run, only while joining, or after loading into a stage.
- Solo and co-op both freeze: prioritize game files, local settings, overlays, drivers, and PC stability.
- Solo works but co-op fails: prioritize Steam connectivity, firewall permissions, host/NAT behavior, and network tests before reinstalling.
- The same player fails as host and guest: start with that player’s PC and network.
- The problem began for the whole party after an update: confirm everyone has the same current build and check official announcements for a possible game-side issue.
Gunfire Reborn supports single-player and online co-op for up to four players, according to its Steam listing. A fast connection does not rule out peer-to-peer, NAT, firewall, or routing problems.
Update the game and Steam first
The game has continued to receive updates: the official Steam announcement archive includes Season 8 updates in June 2026 with performance optimizations and fixes. That does not establish that a specific current freeze or co-op bug has been fixed, so check the installed build rather than assuming.

- Exit Gunfire Reborn and restart Steam.
- In Steam, open Library, right-click Gunfire Reborn, and select Properties.
- Open Updates and let any pending download finish.
- Restart the PC after a substantial update, and ask every co-op player to confirm the game is updated.
Fix freezes in solo play or at launch
Verify the game files
In Steam, open Library, right-click Gunfire Reborn, select Properties > Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files. Let the scan finish, restart Steam, and test again. This low-risk check can repair damaged installation files, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Reset the local settings file safely
A community troubleshooting report identifies usersettings.ini in the game’s local configuration folder as a file to reset when startup or rendering behaves incorrectly. The reported folder is C:Users<YourUserName>AppDataLocalLowduoyiGunfire Reborn. Back up the folder before changing anything.
- Close the game and Steam.
- Press Win+R, enter
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowduoyiGunfire Reborn, and press Enter. - Copy the folder somewhere safe.
- Rename
usersettings.initousersettings.ini.bakrather than deleting it. - Relaunch the game. If that resolves the issue, reapply graphics and control settings gradually.
The folder and filename are based on a community report; locations can vary. Avoid deleting the whole folder, which may contain other local data.
Isolate overlays, mods, and injected utilities
Temporarily turn off Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, ReShade, recording or frame-limiting utilities, mods, and unofficial launchers. A community report involving local co-op tooling notes that overlays can interfere with invites or lobbies; this is an isolation test, not proof that a particular utility is always responsible.

- Disable one group of overlays or utilities.
- Restart Steam and test the game, especially the transition into a run or lobby.
- If the issue disappears, re-enable items one at a time to identify the conflict.
Update Windows and graphics drivers
If solo play still freezes, install pending Windows updates and obtain the graphics driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Reboot, test using default driver settings, and temporarily turn off overclocking, undervolting, custom power profiles, or frame-generation tools. You can also cap the frame rate as a diagnostic test if the freeze occurs under heavy load. The available evidence does not establish a specific driver version as the fix.
Check for a broader PC lockup
If Windows becomes unresponsive, the display loses signal, audio loops, or the PC reboots, investigate system stability as well as the game. Check CPU and GPU temperatures, Windows Reliability Monitor, Event Viewer for display-driver or hardware errors, and any recent RAM, GPU, power-supply, or BIOS changes. Compare behavior in other demanding games. Reports of system-wide freezes are anecdotal and do not establish a common Gunfire Reborn cause.
Fix co-op joins, lobbies, timeouts, and disconnects
Swap the host and compare players
Have the other player host. If the result changes, the first host’s router, NAT, or network may be involved; if the same person fails as host and guest, focus on that PC and connection. Also note whether other Steam peer-to-peer games work and whether the failure occurs on the same network or across different networks.
Check firewall and security software
Allow Steam and the game through the active Windows network profile. In Windows, open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall, then confirm steam.exe and the game executable are permitted. Check third-party security software for blocked or quarantined files as well.

If needed, briefly pause a third-party network filter only to test, then turn it back on immediately. Do not leave antivirus protection disabled or exclude an entire drive. These are general PC troubleshooting steps, not game-specific developer instructions; see Capcom’s general Steam-game troubleshooting guidance for similar checks.
Test the network without making permanent changes
- Confirm Steam is online and not in Offline Mode.
- Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi if possible; stop large downloads, cloud sync, and streaming during the test.
- Restart the modem and router, then test again.
- Turn off a VPN while diagnosing; it can change routing or NAT behavior and may make peer connections worse.
- If available, test briefly through a mobile hotspot. If co-op works there but not on the home connection, investigate the home router, ISP, NAT, or filtering rather than assuming the installation is at fault.
Check the UDP ports cited by the developer
In a June 8, 2021 Steam discussion, a Gunfire Reborn developer advised players with multiplayer connection problems to check Steam P2P connectivity and UDP ports 3478, 4379, and 4380. This is dated guidance, not proof that every current connection problem uses those ports.
A firewall allowance permits traffic through a PC; port forwarding tells a router to send inbound traffic to a particular device. They are different changes. Check local firewall permissions first. Port forwarding is router-specific, unnecessary for many Steam users, and best treated as a reversible advanced test for a suspected strict-NAT or inbound P2P problem—not a required step for everyone.
Test IPv6 only after the basic checks
One Steam community report says disabling IPv6 resolved host-connection, lobby-readiness, and non-host disconnection problems for that player’s group. This is a community-reported workaround, not a confirmed universal fix.

- Press Win+R, enter
ncpa.cpl, and press Enter. - Right-click the active Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter and choose Properties.
- Clear Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6), select OK, then restart Steam and test co-op.
- If it does not help, return to the same adapter properties and re-enable IPv6.
Test this on the affected PC only; do not change router-wide IPv6 settings first. Disabling IPv6 can affect other applications and network services.
If one player freezes or gets kicked after loading
First determine whether the same person is always affected, regardless of who hosts. If so, run the overlay and firewall checks on that player’s PC, compare the connection on Ethernet or another network, and test IPv6 locally only if the earlier steps fail. If the affected person changes when the host changes, the host’s network path may be more relevant.
Keep the symptom precise: a player disconnecting after a stage loads is not the same diagnosis as the entire PC locking up. Record which player hosted, who froze, when it happened, and whether a host swap changed the result.

Reinstall only after updating, verifying files, resetting the settings file, and disabling overlays have failed. Reinstallation is more disruptive than verification and may leave local configuration behind; it also cannot correct router, NAT, firewall, or P2P problems. Back up local data before removing files.

Do not routinely downgrade to an older game build. A historical Reddit report describes an older-build workaround after a suspected update regression, but that approach is version-sensitive and unsupported. Prefer the current build unless an official announcement gives a specific reason otherwise.
Check whether the issue may be game-side
A game-side regression becomes more plausible if multiple players experience the same new failure after an update, particularly across otherwise different PCs and networks. Check the official announcement feed for relevant fixes or notices. The available update information documents ongoing patches, but does not confirm a current universal fix for freezing or co-op failures.
Windows requirements and edition caveats
The Steam technical support listing gives minimum PC requirements of a 64-bit OS, Windows 7, Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD FX-8320, 4 GB RAM, GTX 960 or Radeon R9 280, DirectX 11, broadband internet, and 4 GB storage. Its recommended listing includes Windows 10, 8 GB RAM, and GTX 1060 or Radeon R9 390-class graphics.
Although the game listing still says Windows 7 minimum, Steam Client support moved to Windows 10 and later beginning January 1, 2024, as noted on the Steam store page. Windows 10 or 11 is therefore the practical baseline for a current Steam setup. These steps concern the Steam/Windows PC version; networking and file paths may not apply to console or mobile editions.

What to send support if the problem persists
Steam’s Gunfire Reborn support page identifies the game’s support channel and lists [email protected]; check the live page in case contact details change. Include concise evidence rather than only saying that the game freezes.
- Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage details.
- Whether the problem occurs in solo, co-op, or both; who hosted; and whether changing host helped.
- The exact error or symptom, when it began, and whether it followed a particular update.
- Whether file verification, a settings reset, overlay disabling, firewall checks, a different network, or the IPv6 test changed anything.
- Game version/build if visible, screenshots, crash logs, and relevant system error details.
A community support response points to a possible crash-log location at C:Users<YourUserName>AppDataLocalTempduoyiGunfire RebornCrashes. It may vary by installation. The community report describes packaging the log folder and crash files when asking for help.
