The original Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite do not have built-in microphones. Their headphone/mic jack accepts a compatible headset microphone, and supported games can also use the Nintendo Switch App on a smartphone. Nintendo Switch 2 does have a built-in microphone for GameChat, so you can talk without buying a headset.
Which Nintendo Switch models have a built-in microphone?
Nintendo’s specifications list a headphone/mic jack for the original Switch family, but no internal microphone. A headset jack means the console can receive audio from an attached headset microphone; it does not mean the console has a microphone of its own. Nintendo Switch 2 is the exception, with a built-in microphone intended for GameChat.
| Console | Built-in microphone? | Ways to provide voice input |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | No | Compatible headset through the 3.5 mm headphone/mic jack, or the Nintendo Switch App on a smartphone for supported games |
| Nintendo Switch OLED Model | No | Compatible headset through the 3.5 mm headphone/mic jack, or the Nintendo Switch App on a smartphone for supported games |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | No | Compatible headset through the 3.5 mm headphone/mic jack, or the Nintendo Switch App on a smartphone for supported games |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Yes | Built-in microphone for GameChat, or a supported wired or USB audio-input device |
Nintendo’s Switch technical specifications list a 3.5 mm, four-pole stereo headphone/mic jack on the original Switch, OLED Model, and Lite. The Switch Lite’s USB-C port is listed for charging, so do not assume it serves as a general microphone connection.
How voice chat works on the original Switch
Online multiplayer and voice chat are separate features. Whether you can talk depends on the game and the voice-chat method it supports; owning a Switch Online membership alone does not give every game voice chat.

Use the Nintendo Switch App
The Nintendo Switch App uses a supported iOS or Android device for voice chat in compatible Nintendo Switch software. The console and smart device need internet access, and the Nintendo Account must be linked to both. Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for voice chat in compatible software under Nintendo’s current app guidance. Examples Nintendo names include Splatoon 3 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate; compatibility is game-specific, not universal. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch App overview and FAQ for supported software and requirements.
The app does not start a standalone chat before players join the relevant in-game session. You can use the smart device’s microphone or connect a headset to that device. For Bluetooth headsets used with the app, Nintendo says the headset must support the HSP or HFP profile.

Connect a wired headset
A compatible wired headset with a microphone can plug into the console’s 3.5 mm headphone/mic jack. Look for a four-pole CTIA plug and explicit Switch compatibility, but check the game’s instructions too: the headset supplies microphone input, while the software still has to support voice chat. Compatibility can vary with headset wiring and the game or service.
What changes with Nintendo Switch 2?
Switch 2 has a built-in microphone for GameChat. Nintendo says it works in handheld, tabletop, and TV modes, and audio-only GameChat can include up to 12 people. A compatible USB camera is for video chat and related visual features, not a requirement for talking. Nintendo describes video chat and screen sharing with a compatible camera as supporting up to four people. Details are in Nintendo’s GameChat Guide and FAQ and Switch 2 FAQ.

GameChat is separate from the Nintendo Switch App. Original Switch users cannot join Switch 2 GameChat voice or video sessions through that app. Under Nintendo’s current service rules, GameChat requires Nintendo Switch Online membership; availability and applicable terms can vary by region and account status.
Use the built-in microphone or another input
For basic audio chat, you do not need a separate microphone: use GameChat and the console’s built-in mic. If you connect a supported headset or microphone, check which device Switch 2 is using at System Settings > Audio > Audio Input. Nintendo’s current guidance says supported USB-C, USB, or audio-jack devices can provide input, but compatibility depends on the device.

Do AirPods or other Bluetooth headsets work?
On Switch 2, Bluetooth headphones may provide audio output, but Nintendo says Bluetooth microphone input is not supported. You may be able to hear other people through Bluetooth headphones while speaking through the console’s built-in mic, depending on the selected input. If you need private two-way chat, use a compatible wired headset or supported USB headset instead. Check the selected input under System Settings > Audio > Audio Input.
On an original Switch, distinguish Bluetooth audio from the Nintendo Switch App: app-based chat runs on the smartphone, so a Bluetooth headset paired with the phone may work if it supports the required HSP or HFP profile. That does not add a built-in microphone to the console.

Does the microphone work in handheld, tabletop, and TV mode?
The original Switch, OLED Model, and Lite have no built-in microphone in any mode, so voice input must come from a headset or the smartphone app. Switch 2’s built-in mic is available for GameChat in handheld, tabletop, and TV modes. In TV mode, the console may be farther away; Nintendo recommends moving closer if it does not pick up your voice clearly and checking that the microphone is not blocked.
Is the Switch 2 microphone always listening?
Nintendo says the microphone is generally active when you enable it for GameChat or a compatible game voice feature, not continuously for system-level voice commands. Nintendo says Switch 2 has no system-level voice commands. Parents should still review account and parental permission settings before enabling children’s chat features.
Troubleshoot a Switch 2 microphone that is not working
Nintendo’s microphone troubleshooting steps focus on checking the input, physical placement, and audio settings:
- Speak and check whether the user indicator shows a green border.
- Make sure nothing is blocking the microphone. In TV mode, move closer to the console.
- If you use a separate USB microphone or headset, unplug it and reconnect it. Do the same for an audio-jack headset.
- Open System Settings > Audio > Audio Input and confirm the intended microphone is selected.
- Temporarily turn off Microphone Noise Suppression, then raise microphone input volume if needed.
- Select Test Microphone and speak to check the input.
- If it still fails, hold the Power button for at least three seconds, choose Power Options, then Restart.
- If the microphone still does not work, use Nintendo’s microphone troubleshooting and service page.
Which voice-chat setup fits your console?
| Your situation | Practical option | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Original Switch, OLED, or Lite; supported game | Nintendo Switch App on a smartphone, or a compatible wired headset | Not every game supports voice chat; the app needs a supported in-game session |
| Original Switch family; want private listening and a console-connected mic | Compatible wired CTIA 3.5 mm headset | Confirm microphone and game compatibility before buying |
| Switch 2; casual GameChat | Built-in microphone | Placement and room noise can affect pickup, particularly in TV mode |
| Switch 2; want private chat or closer mic placement | Compatible wired headset or supported USB headset/microphone | Bluetooth microphone input is not supported |
| Switch 2; want video chat | Compatible USB camera | A camera is not needed for audio-only chat |
The key buying distinction is whether you need voice input, private listening, or video. Original Switch owners need an external microphone source for chat; Switch 2 owners can start with the built-in mic and add a compatible wired or USB device if they want a different setup.
