Buy or redeem Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War for the platform you plan to use, then install it from that platform’s store or game library. It is a paid standalone game—not the free Call of Duty: Warzone download—and you may need to install separate Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies content packs after the base game.
Before you download
Black Ops Cold War launched on November 13, 2020, for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and PC. The PC version is listed on Steam and is also available through Battle.net. Check the official Activision game overview and the relevant store in your region for current availability.
The full game includes Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies. Warzone is a separate free-to-play experience; downloading it does not provide Cold War’s Campaign or Zombies. Temporary trials or promotions, if offered, are not a permanent substitute for owning the game.
Use the store account that owns the game
You need the platform account used to buy or redeem the game: PlayStation Network (PSN), Microsoft/Xbox, Steam, or Battle.net. These storefront licenses are separate: a Steam purchase is not a Battle.net license, and a console purchase does not grant a Windows PC copy unless the store explicitly says so. Online features use an Activision account; Steam lists one as a requirement.

Choose the right generation and edition
If moving between console generations, check the edition’s entitlements before buying. A Cross-Gen Bundle is intended to include the versions for both generations within its console family—for example, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. A Cross-Gen upgrade may apply if you already own an earlier-generation edition. PlayStation and Xbox entitlements are not interchangeable, and neither grants a PC storefront license.
The Xbox US store page displayed the Standard edition at $59.99+ and the Cross-Gen Bundle at $69.99+ when checked August 18, 2026; its Cross-Gen Bundle Upgrade was $9.99. These are region- and promotion-dependent storefront prices, not guaranteed current prices elsewhere. Check the Xbox listing for the price and edition currently offered to you.
Allow enough storage
Activision’s installation guide gives launch-era free-space figures, not guaranteed current download sizes. The current Steam listing shows 175 GB of available space. Updates, language files, selected modes, and temporary installation files affect the actual space needed. Free more than the listed minimum where possible, and install only the modes you intend to play.
Download on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5
- Install any pending PlayStation system updates; Activision recommends updating the console before installing the game.
- Open the PlayStation Store, search for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and select the edition you own or want to purchase.
- Choose Download or add the owned game to your library and then download it.
- On PS5, check whether the store or home screen offers separate PS4 and PS5 versions. Select the version you intend to play.
- From the game’s home-screen tile, open Options and look for Manage Game Content or the available add-ons. Install Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, and any required shared files for the modes you want.
- Launch once the base installation and updates are ready, then sign in to or create an Activision account if prompted.
If you are playing from a PS4 disc, keep the disc inserted to launch the game. If a digital copy unexpectedly shows a purchase prompt, confirm that the console is signed in to the purchasing PSN account and try restoring licenses before buying again. Menu names may vary with system updates.

Download on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S
- Open the Microsoft Store on the console and search for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
- Choose the Standard or Cross-Gen edition that matches your ownership and console-generation needs. Purchase or redeem it.
- Select Install. Monitor progress under My games & apps → Manage → Queue.
- When the base game is installed, open its Manage game and add-ons screen. Select Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, and required shared content, then install them.
- Launch the game and sign in to or create an Activision account when prompted.
For online console Multiplayer, the Xbox store currently says Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate is required; the subscription is sold separately. That requirement does not prevent installation or single-player Campaign play. Do not assume a subscription includes Cold War unless the current store listing explicitly says so.
Download on Steam
- Install and open the Steam client, then buy Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War from its Steam store page.
- Open Library, select the game, and click Install.
- Choose an installation drive with adequate free space and confirm. Let Steam complete the download and updates.
- Launch the game and sign in to an Activision account, or create one when prompted.
The Steam version was released on March 8, 2023. Its current listing specifies Windows 10 64-bit version 1803 or newer, 8 GB RAM minimum, DirectX 12, broadband internet, and 175 GB available space. Steam’s displayed price varies by storefront country; the Japanese storefront view showed ¥8,990 on August 18, 2026, which should not be treated as a US price.
Download on Battle.net
- Install the Battle.net desktop app and sign in to the Battle.net account that owns Cold War.
- Open the Call of Duty section and select Black Ops Cold War. If you need to buy it, use the official Battle.net product page and check availability and price for your region.
- Click Install, choose an installation folder, and open installation options or modify-install controls to select the modes you want.
- Allow the download and updates to finish, then launch and connect or create an Activision account when prompted.
A Battle.net copy is not automatically transferable to Steam. If you already own the game through Battle.net, use that account and launcher rather than purchasing it again on Steam.
Install only the modes you want
Activision supports installing selected content packs to reduce the footprint. Exact pack names and whether shared files are required can vary by platform, edition, and patch; consult the game’s content-management screen and the Activision installation guide.

How much storage does Cold War need?
These are Activision’s launch-era free-space figures, not a current download-size promise. The guide’s values vary by platform and installation selection:

The final row is the current Steam store requirement; the preceding figures are Activision’s launch-era guidance. Patches, temporary files, languages, and the packs installed can change what your device needs. Leave extra room before starting, and use an SSD where possible on PC and current-generation consoles.
Can you play while it installs?
Activision says consoles can offer a limited offline Multiplayer-against-bots experience before installation finishes, once the following approximate amounts have installed. It has a subset of maps and modes, preset loadouts, limited Scorestreaks, and randomly selected Operators.

This partial offline experience is not available on PC. Activision says PC players can enter online Multiplayer after approximately 35 GB of Multiplayer content has installed; entering Multiplayer pauses the remaining installation. Availability depends on installation state.

Fix common download and launch problems
The game asks me to buy it again
- Check that you are signed in to the PSN, Xbox, Steam, or Battle.net account that bought or redeemed the game.
- Open the original platform’s store page and check whether it offers Owned, Download, or Install. Verify that the edition and console generation match what you own.
- Restart the console or launcher. On PlayStation, try restoring licenses; on Xbox, refresh the library or account.
- On PC, launch from the storefront where you purchased the game. On disc, make sure the disc is inserted.
- Confirm you selected Cold War rather than Warzone or a free launcher. Contact the platform store or Activision support before paying a second time.
A mode is missing or locked
Open Manage Game Content, Manage game and add-ons, Modify Install, or the equivalent menu for your platform. Install the missing mode pack and required shared files, update the game, and restart it. Also confirm that your account owns the full game rather than only a launcher or temporary trial.
There is not enough storage
- Remove unused Cold War packs or games, or move games to supported external storage.
- Keep additional free space for patches and temporary installation files.
- On PC, check the current storefront requirement rather than relying on the smaller launch-era Multiplayer-only figure if you want the full game.
The download is stuck
- Pause and resume the download, then restart the console or launcher.
- Check available storage and install pending platform, Windows, Steam, or Battle.net updates.
- Confirm whether the platform is downloading the base game or a large update.
- If installing from disc, inspect and clean the disc. Use the platform’s official support tools before deleting the full installation.
The game launches but online play does not work
Check the platform’s online-service status, your network connection, game updates and content packs, Activision account sign-in, and privacy or parental-control settings. Xbox console Multiplayer also requires one of the Game Pass plans listed by the current Xbox store page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download Cold War for free?
No. Black Ops Cold War is a paid standalone game. Warzone is free, but does not include Cold War’s Campaign or Zombies.
Do I need Warzone to play Cold War?
No. Cold War is a separate game. Download it from the store or library for the platform license you own.

Can I move my Steam copy to Battle.net?
No. A Steam purchase and a Battle.net purchase are separate PC storefront licenses.
Do I need an Activision account?
Steam lists an Activision account as required, and the game may prompt you to sign in or create one during setup or when you access online-connected services.
Can I play Campaign without Xbox Game Pass?
The Xbox store’s subscription requirement applies to online console Multiplayer. It does not prevent installing or playing single-player Campaign.
