Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a standard desktop CPU with a metal heat spreader, use 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth or coffee filter. Remove the bulk of the old paste dry, gently wipe both the CPU and cooler contact plate with a lightly moistened cloth, and let them dry completely before applying fresh paste. Don’t scrape with metal or pour liquid near the socket.
When should you clean thermal paste?
Clean and replace the paste whenever you remove or reseat the CPU cooler, reuse a cooler that has been removed, or correct a disturbed installation. It is also appropriate when the paste is dried, uneven, contaminated, or has spilled onto nearby areas.
If the cooler has not been removed and the computer is working normally, there is no need to remove paste on a schedule simply because it is old. Cleaning is part of a cooler removal or repair, not routine maintenance for an undisturbed system.
What you need
- 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol. iFixit recommends this concentration for thermal-paste cleaning; Intel support does not specify a required percentage. iFixit’s guide · Intel Community response
- A lint-free cloth, coffee filters, or wipes specifically made for electronics or thermal paste.
- A plastic card or plastic spudger, only if paste has hardened into lumps.
- A screwdriver that fits the cooler’s fasteners and good lighting.
Nitrile gloves and a tray or magnetic mat for screws are optional. Cotton swabs can reach edges, but may leave fibers; use a lint-free cloth or coffee filter for the broad flat surfaces. Keep compressed air for dust elsewhere in the case, not for blowing liquid or debris into the CPU socket.

How to clean the CPU and cooler
- Shut down and prepare the PC. Shut down normally, switch off the power supply if it has a switch, unplug the power cable, then briefly press the case power button. Work on a stable surface away from carpet. Touch grounded metal on the case before handling components or use appropriate ESD precautions. An ESD wrist strap is a useful precaution, not a universal prerequisite.
- Remove the cooler gently. Follow the cooler and motherboard instructions. If it feels stuck, do not yank it straight up; gently twist it back and forth to loosen the paste bond. If controlled warmth would help, warm the system briefly before shutting it down, then unplug it and let hot components cool enough to handle. Never work on a powered or hot system, and do not use a heat gun or open flame. Some AMD socket configurations can pull the processor out with a strongly bonded cooler, so use care rather than force.
- Wipe off the bulk of the paste dry. Hold the parts so residue cannot fall into the socket. Use a dry coffee filter or lint-free cloth, wiping from the center outward and switching to a clean section as it gets dirty. For hardened lumps, use a plastic card or spudger with very light pressure. iFixit recommends a plastic spudger for solidified paste and warns against metal objects. iFixit: How to Apply Thermal Paste
- Clean the CPU heat spreader. Put a few drops of alcohol on fresh cleaning material so it is damp, not dripping. Wipe the metal top gently; do not pour alcohol onto the processor or force liquid under it toward the socket. Repeat with fresh sections until no visible residue transfers, then make a final light pass.
- Clean the cooler contact plate. Use the same dry-then-lightly-moistened method on the cooler’s metal contact surface. Check the perimeter and any grooves or machining marks, and finish with a clean section of material. AMD says both the CPU lid and cooler plate should be free of old grease before reinstalling. AMD cooler installation and removal guidance
- Inspect and let both parts dry. Under bright light, check for visible paste streaks, debris, and cloth fibers. Leave the CPU and cooler until both are fully dry and no liquid is visible. Do not touch the cleaned contact surfaces. iFixit likewise advises allowing the processor and heatsink to dry completely. iFixit guide
- Apply fresh paste and reinstall. Do not reuse paste that has already been spread, or put new paste over old residue. Apply fresh compound in the quantity and pattern recommended for your CPU or cooler; the right pattern varies by processor and cooler. iFixit notes that application methods differ and that spreading can potentially trap air bubbles. Follow the cooler maker’s mounting instructions, reconnect the CPU-fan cable, and check that it is connected before powering on. iFixit application guide
Choosing a cleaner
| Option | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol | The standard choice for ordinary thermal paste on a CPU heat spreader and cooler plate. iFixit recommends 90% or higher; 99% is a good option when readily available. | May take several gentle passes on dried residue. It is flammable, so keep it away from ignition sources and let it evaporate fully. Intel support does not specify an exact concentration, so 90%+ is a practical preference, not a universal processor requirement. Intel Community response |
| 70% isopropyl alcohol | Can clean ordinary paste if used sparingly and allowed to dry completely. | It contains more water than higher-concentration alcohol, so it is not the first choice for repasting. |
| Purpose-made thermal-material cleaner | Useful for stubborn residue, frequent builders, or a convenient purpose-made wipe or cleaner. | Follow its label and compatibility guidance. ARCTIC describes MX Cleaner as limonene-based and designed to remove residue without smearing; it is not necessary for an ordinary fresh-paste cleanup. ARCTIC MX Cleaner |
| Dry wipe alone | Good for lifting most fresh, loose paste before using a cleaner. | Not a reliable final clean: residue can remain in surface texture. |
A two-step option is Arctic Silver ArctiClean, which the manufacturer presents as a thermal-material remover and surface purifier. Arctic Silver ArctiClean For an ordinary repaste, alcohol and a lint-free wipe are usually the simpler route.
Avoid water, window cleaner, hand sanitizer, and generic disinfectant wipes: they may contain additives or leave residue. Acetone and other strong solvents are not routine CPU-cleaning substitutes; they can affect plastics, coatings, adhesives, labels, or nearby materials. Apply any cleaner to the wipe rather than spraying or pouring it onto the CPU or motherboard.
If the paste is dried, on the motherboard, or in the socket
Dried or stubborn paste
Lift only thick lumps with a plastic tool, then use a small amount of alcohol or a purpose-made remover and repeat gentle wiping. Let the cleaner soften residue briefly if needed; do not compensate by pushing harder. iFixit recommends a plastic spudger for solidified paste, and ARCTIC describes MX Cleaner as a paste remover. iFixit guide · ARCTIC removal FAQ
Paste on the board around the CPU
Disconnect power and use a lightly moistened swab or lint-free material to pick up residue, keeping it from migrating toward the socket. Do not assume every paste formulation is electrically harmless: compounds differ, and the risk depends on the material and where it has gone. Let the area dry fully and inspect it before reinstalling the cooler.

Paste on pins or socket contacts
Stop before attempting aggressive cleaning. Do not pour cleaner into the socket, scrape contacts, or probe them with metal; do not use a paper towel or thick cloth inside the socket. Photograph the area before any repair attempt. If contamination is deep in a pin-grid or land-grid socket, or pins are bent, professional repair may be safer than home cleaning. AMD community support discussions also emphasize gentle handling around delicate processor contacts; treat that as practical community guidance, not a universal formal specification. If the CPU came out with the cooler
Do not pull harder. Separate the parts carefully and inspect the CPU pins or socket contacts under bright light before reinstalling. If anything is bent or damaged, stop rather than forcing the CPU into place.

Some laptop and specialized processors have exposed silicon rather than a broad metal heat spreader. The die is more delicate: do not scrape it, apply minimal pressure, and avoid flooding nearby board components. Follow the laptop or cooler manufacturer’s service instructions where available. iFixit’s laptop repasting guide also describes careful use of high-concentration alcohol and lint-free material around laptop components. iFixit: How to Repaste a Laptop
