Best complete gaming headset: the Drop + EPOS/Sennheiser PC38X, because it includes a boom microphone. Those are different kinds of products: the HD 560S and most picks below need a separate mic for chat.
First, a room check: open-back headphones leak sound and provide little isolation. They are a poor fit for shared rooms, loud PCs, nearby televisions, or anyone who must keep game audio private. If that describes your setup, choose closed-back headphones instead.
Quick comparison: five open-back picks
These recommendations are separated by use rather than treated as interchangeable. Prices below are US observations from August 16–18, 2026, not guaranteed current prices or stock. Sennheiser’s pages showed differing sale and list prices, so check the linked listing before buying.
| Model | Type | Microphone | Price evidence | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sennheiser HD 560S | Wired, open-back headphone | No | $279.95 regular and $199.95 sale on its product page; another Sennheiser collection showed $149.95 during the August 16–18, 2026 observation period. Sennheiser product page | Competitive gaming and music | Separate mic required; little isolation |
| Sennheiser HD 550 | Wired, open-back headphone | No | $349.95 on one Sennheiser collection and $199.95 on another during the August 16–18, 2026 observation period. Sennheiser open-back collection | Gaming and music as an all-rounder | Separate mic required; source output may matter |
| Drop + EPOS/Sennheiser PC38X | Wired, open-back gaming headset | Yes, integrated boom mic | Current price and stock were not established. Drop listing | Multiplayer and voice chat | Availability can be inconsistent; leaks sound |
| Philips SHP9600 | Wired, open-back headphone | No | Current US price and stock were not established; see Philips specifications. | Budget gaming if you already have a mic | Separate mic required |
| AKG K702 | Wired, open-back headphone | No | Current US price and stock were not established. | Players who specifically want a spacious presentation | Separate mic required; wide stage is not automatically more accurate |
The ranking weighs positional clarity, chat practicality, comfort, sound beyond games, source/platform fit, value, and the practical consequences of an open design. It is a buying guide, not a claim that every model was tested in the same lab or will fit every listener.

1. Sennheiser HD 560S: best overall headphone for competitive gaming
The HD 560S is the strongest default headphone pick here for players who want detailed, relatively neutral sound for games and music. It is not a headset: there is no built-in microphone, so include the cost and desk space of a separate mic if you use voice chat. RTINGS compares it directly with both the PC38X and Philips SHP9600, and Sennheiser lists it in its gaming-oriented wired headphone collection.
Sennheiser describes the HD 560S as an open-back reference headphone and lists a 6 Hz–38 kHz frequency range; that specification is not a measure of gaming performance. Its US product page showed $279.95 regular and $199.95 sale pricing in the August 16–18, 2026 observation period, while a separate Sennheiser collection showed $149.95. Those differences make the live price more useful than assuming a single stable street price. Check Sennheiser’s HD 560S listing.
How it plays
Its analytical presentation can make fine game details easier to pick out, but footsteps are not guaranteed to become clearer in every game or for every listener. Placement depends on the game mix, fit, hearing, and your preference for the headphone’s tuning. A neutral balance may sound less forceful for explosions than a bass-forward gaming headset, while prominent treble can feel sharp to treble-sensitive listeners.
Connection and setup
The HD 560S uses a 3.5-mm connection arrangement and includes a 6.35-mm adapter. Check the cable and adapter configuration on the product page before purchase; a 6.35-mm plug does not connect directly to a typical controller jack. For PC or console chat, add a separate microphone. On consoles, a headphone connection can provide game audio, but it does not supply voice input without a mic and suitable connection.
Buy it if you want one wired headphone for competitive play and music, already have a microphone, or are comfortable adding one. Skip it if you need a one-device chat solution, wireless operation, or isolation.
2. Sennheiser HD 550: best newer all-rounder
The HD 550 is the newer all-rounder for someone splitting time between games and music. It is still a headphone, not a headset, and still needs a separate mic. PC Gamer lists a 150-ohm impedance, 237-gram weight, 38-mm drivers, 1.8-meter cable, 3.5-mm connector, adapter, and drawstring bag. The impedance makes source capability worth checking, but does not mean every controller or laptop will fail to drive it.
Sennheiser collection pages displayed $349.95 and $199.95 during the August 16–18, 2026 observation period. At the lower observed price it is a more compelling alternative; at the higher one, compare it carefully with the HD 560S and other headphones rather than paying a premium solely because it is newer. See Sennheiser’s open-back collection and PC Gamer’s HD 550 review and specifications.

- OPEN -BACK WIRED GAMING HEADSET FOR PC & PS5: Open‑back acoustic gaming headset delivers a wide, natural soundstage with accurate positional audio. Reduces internal sound reflections for realistic, creator‑intended game sound.
- HD DRIVERS INSPIRED BY PROFESSIONAL STUDIO MONITOR HEADPHONES: Features high‑definition 40mm driver units adapted from Sony MDR‑MV1 open back monitor headphones. Delivers deep bass, clear mids, and detailed highs for immersive PC and console gaming.
- CUSTOM RPG/ADVENTURE EQUALIZER: Developed with PlayStation Sound Engineers to deliver deeper immersion and precise spatial sound. Includes support for 360 Spatial Sound for Gaming via USB‑C Audio Box.
- ULTRA-LIGHTWEIGHT OVER-EAR COMFORT (Approx. 199g): Lightweight over‑ear gaming headset built with premium aluminum materials and a balanced headband design. Designed for long gaming sessions with reduced pressure and fatigue.
- CLEAR, NATURAL VOICE COMMUNICATION: Detachable cardioid boom microphone focuses on your voice while minimizing background noise. Open‑back design allows natural voice monitoring, with built‑in volume and mute buttons for quick, in‑game adjustments.
Like the HD 560S, its open presentation suits quieter rooms and can be useful for detailed listening, but it will not isolate you from a loud environment. Its listed 150-ohm impedance is a reason to check whether your source reaches a comfortable listening level with enough headroom. A headphone amp may help if it does not; it is not an automatic requirement.

3. Drop + EPOS/Sennheiser PC38X: best complete open-back gaming headset
The PC38X is the practical pick for multiplayer players who want an open-back design and an integrated boom microphone. Unlike the other models in this list, it is a complete headset, so there is no separate mic to buy or route. RTINGS has a direct comparison with the HD 560S, while TechRadar notes that current naming and availability can be less straightforward than in earlier years. Listings may use Drop + EPOS, Drop + Sennheiser, or PC38X naming; confirm the exact model and seller before checkout. Read TechRadar’s PC38X review.
A current dependable US price and stock status were not established for the August 16–18, 2026 observation period, so compare its live total against the headphone-plus-microphone setup you would otherwise buy. Drop’s listing identifies it as an open-back gaming headset, but a live listing alone should not be taken as proof that a unit is in stock. Check Drop’s current listing.
Buy it if voice chat matters and you want one straightforward wired setup for compatible PC or controller connections. Skip it if you already own a good microphone, want wireless play, or need isolation. Open-back leakage can also reach a sensitive microphone; lower headphone volume and position the boom mic close to your mouth if that becomes a problem.

4. Philips SHP9600: best budget headphone when chat is covered
The SHP9600 is a sensible lower-cost route into open-back gaming if you already have a microphone or do not use voice chat. Philips documentation identifies it as an over-ear open-back headphone and includes a 6.3-mm-to-3.5-mm adapter; RTINGS classifies it as wired and without a built-in microphone. Philips SHP9600 specifications and RTINGS’ HD 560S versus SHP9600 comparison cover those product distinctions.
No dependable current US price or stock was established for the August 16–18, 2026 observation period. Treat it as the value pick only when its live price is meaningfully below the HD 560S; if the gap closes, the Sennheiser is the stronger default recommendation in this guide. Do not assume the SHP9600 must have inferior positional performance simply because it is a budget option: fit, tuning, and preference all matter.

Buy it if you find a substantial price gap and already have chat covered. Skip it if the total cost after adding a mic approaches a complete headset or a discounted HD 560S.
5. AKG K702: specialist pick for a wide presentation
The K702 fills a different role: it is for players who specifically prefer an expansive-feeling presentation and separation in large game environments. A wide perceived soundstage is not the same as more accurate imaging; front-to-back placement and center focus can matter more than width in a competitive match. This recommendation is therefore a preference-led alternative, not a universal upgrade.

Competitive FPS
Start with the HD 560S if your priority is detail and positional cues and you can provide a separate mic. Choose the PC38X instead if integrated chat is part of the requirement. Do not choose by soundstage width alone: game mix, imaging, fit, and your own response to the headphone matter.
Single-player games and music
Compare the HD 560S and HD 550 based on price and preferred presentation. The HD 550 is the newer all-rounder, but its observed sale and list prices differed substantially. The SHP9600 is the economy choice only when it is meaningfully cheaper and your microphone needs are already handled.

Console multiplayer
A 3.5-mm controller connection is the simplest wired route when the headphone’s cable ends in a compatible plug. The HD 560S’s connection arrangement includes a 6.35-mm adapter, so check the actual cable configuration; do not try to plug a 6.35-mm connector into a controller. The PC38X is the simplest chat option in this group because it includes a mic, but confirm that the listing’s cable and connector suit your controller. Separate headphones need a separate microphone and may need an appropriate adapter or connection route for voice chat. PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch support can vary by device and connection, so “works with console” does not guarantee identical chat, USB audio, or game/chat mixing features.

Noisy or shared room
None of these open-back models is a good fix for room noise or sound leakage. Choose a closed-back headset if you game beside other people, a television, or loud cooling equipment, or if the microphone picks up sound escaping from the ear cups. Lower volume, a mic positioned close to your mouth, and a cardioid desktop mic can reduce spill; a carefully set noise gate may help, but it cannot replace isolation.
Do you need a DAC or headphone amplifier?
Not automatically. A headphone can work from a laptop or controller yet still have limited volume headroom, depending on the output and the listener’s preferred level. The HD 550’s listed 150-ohm impedance makes source output worth checking; impedance alone does not establish that an amp is required. If you cannot reach a comfortable level cleanly, a suitable headphone amp or DAC/amp can address output power, connectivity, or noise. It will not magically improve positional audio. The PC38X is the simplest plug-in-and-chat choice here; the other models need a separate microphone for voice chat.
What open-back design changes in everyday use
Open-back cups allow more sound to move between the headphone and room. This can create a less closed-in presentation and help you remain aware of surroundings, but it also means the people nearby may hear your game. They provide little or no passive isolation, and their bass impact may feel lighter than that of some closed-back or wireless gaming headsets. An open design is a room-and-preference choice, not a guarantee of better positional audio.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMost audiophile-style headphones also omit the features that distinguish many gaming headsets: a microphone, game/chat mixing, onboard controls, or platform-specific software. Of these five, only the PC38X includes a mic. A separate USB mic, inline mic, lavalier, or compatible boom attachment changes the total setup cost and may add connection complexity, especially on a console.
Comfort, fit, and treble are personal
Long-session comfort depends on clamp force, pad material and depth, headband pressure, weight, glasses, hair, and skin contact. The HD 550’s listed weight is 237 grams, but that number alone cannot predict comfort. Try the fit when possible and check the retailer’s return terms. The evidence here does not establish one universally most comfortable model or a comparable glasses-fit result across all five.
Likewise, a detailed or analytical tuning can reveal fine sounds yet feel sharp to listeners sensitive to upper-midrange or treble energy. Bass-leaning preferences may favor a more forceful closed-back design for explosions and cinematic games. EQ is an optional personal adjustment, not a prerequisite for making a headphone suitable.
Are wireless open-back gaming headphones a better option?
This shortlist focuses on wired models; truly wireless open-back gaming choices remain uncommon. If wireless convenience is essential, a closed-back wireless gaming headset is likely to fit the requirement better than buying a wired open-back headphone and trying to work around it.
