Instead, Epic introduced Zero Build as a separate no-building Battle Royale option. Its announcements show both formats existing in Fortnite, but they do not guarantee that today’s modes or future rules will stay the same.
Has Epic announced that building is going away?
No removal announcement appears in the official sources reviewed. Epic’s announcements describe Zero Build as a no-building mode alongside Fortnite’s building format; they do not say that building will be removed from the main Battle Royale experience.

That distinction matters: a confirmed mode is not a promise about Fortnite’s permanent future. Epic can change its playlists or rules, and the announcements do not establish what it will decide next.
How Fortnite’s building and Zero Build formats differ

When Epic introduced Zero Build on March 29, 2022, it described the mode as Battle Royale without building. Epic wrote: “Without building, all players have the recharging Overshield as your first line of defense in Zero Build.” The same launch announcement described Ascenders, Mantling, and sprinting between cover as part of the mode’s design. Epic initially listed Zero Build in Solo, Duos, Trios, and Squads. Those are launch-era details from March 2022, not confirmation that each playlist is available now.
What Epic’s Fortnite OG announcement says
On December 5, 2024, Epic announced that Fortnite OG would return and “be here to stay.” The announcement said Solos and Squads would be available right away, along with Zero Build, and that building mechanics would be uniform with Battle Royale as it was at that time. This is evidence that Epic described both building and no-building options within the OG offering; it does not confirm their present availability or settle future Battle Royale plans. What players can—and cannot—infer about the future
- Confirmed: Epic launched Zero Build as a no-building Battle Royale mode and later announced Zero Build alongside building mechanics in Fortnite OG.
- Not confirmed: The announcements do not promise that building will remain forever, that Zero Build will always be offered, or that either mode’s rules and playlists will stay fixed.
- Not established: The official material cited here gives no player-preference or mode-usage figures, and no forecast about a future removal decision.
Epic’s official news index showed continuing Fortnite announcements as of October 3, 2026, including a listing dated October 1. That demonstrates ongoing updates, not a decision about building. Check Fortnite’s official news.

- Open Fortnite and go to the in-game Discover listings.
- Look for the current Battle Royale and Zero Build options; playlist names and availability can change.
- For announcements about rule changes, check Fortnite’s official news rather than treating older launch details as current guarantees.
