Yes, VALORANT can run on a PC with 4GB of RAM, but that does not mean it will run smoothly. Riot lists 4GB as the minimum, yet a Windows PC must also share memory with the operating system, the game, Vanguard, drivers and any open apps. Treat 4GB as technically sufficient—not a comfortable target. If you want more consistent play, 8GB is a practical floor and 16GB is a better target for gaming alongside everyday apps.

What Riot’s PC requirements say

Riot lists 4GB of RAM for every performance tier on its VALORANT PC specifications page. The tiers pair that memory figure with different CPUs and graphics hardware, so RAM alone does not determine performance.

Riot tier CPU examples GPU examples RAM Riot’s stated target
Minimum Intel i3-540 or AMD Athlon 200GE Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon R5 220 4GB; 1GB graphics memory listed Approximately 30 FPS
Recommended Intel i3-4150 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 or AMD Radeon R7 240 4GB Approximately 60 FPS
High-end Intel i5-9400F or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti, AMD Radeon R7 370 or Intel Arc A310 4GB 144+ FPS

These targets belong to the complete CPU-and-GPU tiers, not to any PC that happens to have 4GB of RAM. Riot also specifies 64-bit Windows 10, build 19041 or newer, or 64-bit Windows 11, and CPU support for SSE 4.2 or AVX. On Windows 11, TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot are also required. Meeting the RAM figure does not overcome an incompatible processor, operating system or security configuration.

“Can run” is not the same as “runs smoothly”

There are several different thresholds: a PC may be able to install VALORANT, launch it, and play a match, yet still struggle to deliver consistent frames. Riot’s minimum tier is associated with approximately 30 FPS; its recommended tier with approximately 60 FPS. Neither is a guarantee for every 4GB computer, and the published requirements do not establish how a particular 4GB system will perform.

Windows, VALORANT, Riot Client, Vanguard, drivers and background activity all use memory. If the PC has integrated graphics, that graphics hardware may also reserve or use system RAM. The amount available to the game therefore depends on the device. When physical memory runs short, Windows can use storage as virtual memory, but a drive is much slower than RAM; heavy paging can show up as hitching, pauses and sluggishness rather than a simple, predictable drop in average FPS.

A 4GB PC may be playable with low settings and few open applications, but results will vary with its CPU, GPU, cooling and storage as well as its memory. Average FPS is only part of the experience: frame-time spikes and freezes can make play feel uneven even when the displayed average looks acceptable.

Check whether memory is actually the bottleneck

Start by identifying the hardware and looking at what is happening while the game runs. Open Settings > System > About for the processor and installed memory. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, then check Performance for memory, CPU, disk and GPU activity. You can also run dxdiag to inspect graphics and driver information. Task Manager labels can vary between Windows versions.

Compare installed memory with the amount Windows reports as usable. Hardware reservations, including shared graphics memory, can make usable memory lower. If substantially less than 4GB is usable, the PC is operating below Riot’s listed RAM figure.

What you notice Areas to investigate
Long loading or stutters accompanied by high disk activity Memory pressure, paging, background work or a slow hard drive
Low average FPS GPU, CPU, resolution, graphics settings or thermals
FPS falls after playing for a while Thermal throttling, memory pressure, drivers or another system issue
Game will not launch Windows version, Vanguard, TPM and Secure Boot on Windows 11, CPU instruction support or drivers
Rubber-banding or packet loss Network connection or route to the server—not system RAM
Good FPS but delayed input VSync, display settings, drivers, system load or peripherals

This is a troubleshooting guide, not a definitive diagnosis: more than one issue can occur at once. During a short test, watch memory use and disk activity as well as CPU and GPU load. If stutters coincide with high disk activity while memory is nearly full, RAM pressure or paging is plausible. If CPU or GPU use is the limiting factor, adding RAM may have little effect on frame rate.

Make a 4GB PC’s first test as light as possible

  1. Restart the PC to clear accumulated app activity.
  2. Open Task Manager and close applications you do not need, such as browsers with many tabs, extra launchers, overlays, recording software or cloud-sync utilities. Do not end Windows, graphics-driver, Riot or security processes blindly.
  3. On a laptop, plug it in, select an appropriate performance mode and keep its vents unobstructed.
  4. In VALORANT’s video settings, use Fullscreen and set Material, Texture, Detail and UI Quality to Low. Turn Vignette, Bloom, Distortion and Cast Shadows off; start with Anti-Aliasing set to None and Anisotropic Filtering at 1x or the lowest option. Leave VSync off unless you specifically need it to control tearing.
  5. Start at your monitor’s native resolution. If GPU load is high and performance is poor, try 1600×900 or 1280×720; a lower resolution can help a GPU-limited PC, but it will not fix severe memory pressure and may make the image less clear.
  6. Test a match and note whether the problem is low FPS, intermittent stutter, slow loading, input delay or network lag. If your older CPU has a Multithreaded Rendering option, compare it both ways rather than assuming one setting is best for every processor.

These settings are a starting point, not a promise of higher FPS or lower memory use: several chiefly reduce GPU workload or visual effects. Avoid registry cleaners and aggressive “FPS booster” apps; they can create instability without resolving the actual bottleneck.

Keep virtual memory enabled; an SSD is not a RAM upgrade

On a 4GB PC, leave Windows-managed virtual memory enabled unless you have a specific troubleshooting reason to change it. A page file can help Windows avoid an immediate memory-allocation failure, but it cannot match physical RAM speed. Increasing its size does not turn 4GB into 8GB, and constant paging can make a game hitch. An SSD can make Windows more responsive and reduce the severity of storage-related pauses compared with a hard drive, but it does not guarantee higher average FPS.

When to upgrade—and what to check first

If the computer supports replaceable memory, upgrading is the most direct way to ease memory pressure. As practical guidance rather than Riot requirements, 8GB is a sensible minimum upgrade for a budget gaming PC; 16GB offers more breathing room for VALORANT alongside a browser, Discord or other everyday software. Beyond 16GB, other components may be the more useful next upgrade once memory pressure is no longer a problem.

Before buying memory, check the exact device or motherboard specifications. Confirm the DDR generation, module format (desktop DIMM or laptop SO-DIMM), supported speed, maximum capacity and available slots. DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. Where practical, a matched pair can enable dual-channel operation; some integrated-graphics systems may lose graphics performance with a single module, but the effect depends on the hardware. Budget laptops may have soldered memory that cannot be upgraded.

If a laptop is not upgradeable, weigh the cost of an SSD or other supported improvements against replacing the device. Do not buy RAM—or a graphics card—before confirming compatibility and identifying the actual limit. A machine with enough memory can still perform poorly because its CPU or GPU is too weak, or because it overheats.

Other causes of poor performance

  • CPU or GPU limits: VALORANT’s frame rate depends on both. A capable amount of RAM cannot compensate for hardware below the game’s requirements.
  • Integrated graphics: The GPU may share system memory, leaving less for Windows and the game; performance also depends on the graphics hardware itself.
  • Thermal throttling: A thin laptop with blocked vents or inadequate cooling may reduce CPU or GPU speed as it heats up.
  • Storage and drivers: A hard drive can make loading and paging feel slower. Outdated or problematic drivers can also cause issues; use official sources for driver updates.
  • Launch compatibility: Riot’s requirements include 64-bit Windows and CPU instruction support. Windows 11 also requires TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot for VALORANT. These are compatibility checks, not performance upgrades.
  • Network conditions: Adding RAM will not fix latency, packet loss or rubber-banding.

Should you keep playing on 4GB?

Keep using the PC if VALORANT launches, a match is playable and occasional hitches are acceptable—especially if you can close other apps and the rest of the hardware meets Riot’s requirements. Plan an upgrade if Windows is already sluggish, stutters coincide with high disk activity, or you want to play while multitasking. Choose 8GB as a practical budget floor and 16GB for more comfortable everyday use; first confirm that the device can support the upgrade.
