HiDef and Unity announced a real collaboration on September 1, 2021: HiDef planned to build its first mobile game using Unity, with co-marketing and gaming-services support from the engine company. What did HiDef and Unity announce?
In a September 1, 2021 announcement, San Diego-based studio HiDef said it was collaborating with Unity on its first title, a mobile game it described as a “metaverse” experience. HiDef planned a 2022 release and said it intended to self-publish.
The announcement describes a technology and services relationship, not a joint venture or a transfer of ownership. It does not say Unity funded the studio, would publish the game, or held exclusive rights to it.
What Unity’s role was—and was not
HiDef said the project would use Unity’s real-time 3D platform, participate in the Made with Unity co-marketing program, and work with Unity’s Operate Solutions Gaming Services team. The announcement also pointed to mobile-game and self-publishing expertise as part of the relationship.

Those elements could offer development tools, operational guidance, and promotional exposure. They do not establish that Unity was building the game, guaranteeing distribution, or endorsing its eventual commercial performance. The announcement did not disclose contractual terms, funding, revenue sharing, or the scope of services.
What HiDef meant by “social impact”
HiDef framed social impact as broadening access to technology and game-development careers, empowering creators from underrepresented backgrounds, and supporting inclusive storytelling. The announcement said HiDef Chief Impact Officer Dr. David Washington and Unity Vice President of Social Impact Jessica Lindl would work together on these aims. It also listed a planned appearance by Washington at the Unity for Humanity 2021 Summit, including a fireside chat with Common.

These were stated priorities, not reported outcomes. The announcement set no measurable targets for representation, accessibility, player safety, education, jobs, charitable giving, or community benefit. Without such measures, the values explain the intended direction but cannot show what changed for players or creators.
Who was behind the studio?
HiDef was founded in 2019 by Anthony Castoro, Jace Hall, Rick Fox, and social-impact specialist David Washington. In its press-release archive, the company said it had raised more than $9 million by March 2021, including a $7.5 million Series A led by Wick Capital Partners. Those are company-reported financing figures.

The Unity announcement also named four hires: Chip Lange as president; Jen Donahoe as head of publishing and marketing; Chad Stafford as executive producer; and Chris Cleary as director of product management and analytics. HiDef said the group brought a combined 60 years of mobile-game experience from companies including Electronic Arts, Zynga, Riot Games, Scopely, and Gearbox. That experience claim was made by the company.
What kind of game was planned?
HiDef described the planned title as a “genre-defining” mobile metaverse game built around creative expression, competition, shared content experiences, and cultural discovery. That language communicates an ambition, but “metaverse” is not, by itself, a technical specification or a clear description of gameplay.

The cited 2021 announcement did not give the game a final title or show gameplay, screenshots, or a trailer. It did not specify monetization, cross-play, platforms beyond a mobile-first plan, or systems for moderation, privacy, and child safety. It also did not mention NFTs, blockchain, cryptocurrency, or virtual land, so those features should not be inferred from the metaverse label.

On June 7, 2022, HiDef announced a separate partnership with Snap to develop an off-platform social mobile game featuring Bitmoji avatars, Snap augmented-reality technology, music, and dance. The Snap announcement also said Snap would support HiDef’s upcoming flagship game IP. Contemporary TechCrunch coverage said the Bitmoji title was expected in 2023.

This follow-up points to avatar-based social expression as another part of HiDef’s plans, but it does not establish that the Bitmoji project was the Unity-backed game. The available announcements do not confirm that either planned title reached release.
Did the game ever launch?
No launch is verified by the cited public record. HiDef forecast a 2022 release for the Unity-associated mobile project; the later Bitmoji game was forecast for 2023. The announcements and contemporary coverage document plans, not a public launch or an app-store listing.
That is not proof that either project was canceled or that development stopped. The sources cited here do not document a launch, cancellation, shutdown, final product name, player numbers, revenue, or a formal explanation from HiDef, Unity, or Snap. The careful conclusion is that the projects’ commercial outcomes remain unverified in this record.
What the partnership shows—and what it leaves open
The announced arrangement paired a studio’s concept and self-publishing ambition with Unity’s engine ecosystem, co-marketing program, and gaming-services team. It also made inclusion and creator access part of the pitch. But the announcement left key questions unanswered: how the game would play, how it would make money, what operational responsibilities each company would take on, and how social-impact goals would be measured.
