The 2022 release by security researcher and hardware hacker Stacksmashing keeps the familiar five-letter guessing board, but swaps keyboard or touchscreen controls for handheld input and lets you start another puzzle as soon as a round ends. Its compact word checker is less reliable than the web game’s dictionary, however.
What the Game Boy Wordle port is
Stacksmashing, who also uses the handle ghidraninja, released the fan-made Game Boy ROM in February 2022. It is an unofficial clone, not a release from Nintendo or The New York Times. Contemporary reports described versions that could run on original Game Boy hardware, Analogue Pocket, or in a browser. HotHardware and GameSpot covered the release.

The release coverage does not establish current download availability, cartridge compatibility lists, or present-day hardware prices. Check the project’s current download information and your cartridge or device documentation before buying hardware or loading a ROM.
How a round works—and what changes from web Wordle
The port retains Wordle’s recognizable guess-and-feedback board, adapted to a small screen and handheld controls. In the browser build, use the arrow keys to move among letters, Alt to select a letter, Control to back up, and Enter to submit a guess. GameSpot reported that the game automatically resets to a new word after a win or loss, so it can be played repeatedly rather than stopping at one shared daily puzzle.

Why the word checker can seem odd
The original port’s ROM had limited space for a large conventional word list. Stacksmashing explained that it uses a Bloom filter to check whether guesses appear among the 8,000 most common English words, and acknowledged that the approach had a high error rate. A Bloom filter is a space-saving membership check, not a complete dictionary: depending on its configuration, it can produce false positives, and the limited underlying vocabulary also means valid words outside its coverage may not be accepted. The result is that a strange-looking guess may pass, while a legitimate but less common word may fail. HotHardware’s report reproduces the developer’s explanation.
A fuller dictionary can fit, but it takes different compression
A separate 2022 implementation by Alexander Pruss showed that a much larger vocabulary could fit in a 32K cartridge. Hackaday reports that it packed 12,972 five-letter words and a 2,315-word answer list alongside the game code by sorting and delta-encoding the words and replacing a library call. That is a different implementation, not evidence that Stacksmashing’s original ROM uses the same lists or achieves the same validation accuracy. Choosing between the original port and a fuller-dictionary version
- Choose the original port if you want the specific 2022 release, its simple handheld adaptation, and its rapid replay. Its compact validator is the trade-off.
- Look for a fuller-dictionary implementation if broad word acceptance matters more than using the original release. The 32K-cartridge example demonstrates that more extensive lists are possible, but it is a separate project.
- Use the browser build if you want to try the game without arranging original hardware or a cartridge.
