Dr. Tom Tilley’s modification used the toy’s handlebars for steering and buttons, with a small Raspberry Pi board translating those controls into USB joystick input.
How the Paw Patrol toy controls Super Hang-On
In its 18 January 2022 report, AUSRETROGAMER describes a joystick potentiometer fitted inside the toy and held in place by a 3D-printed guide. Moving the handlebars changes the steering input; three buttons on the handlebars provide additional controls.
The steering sensor and buttons connect to a Raspberry Pi Pico programmed to act as a USB joystick. Plugged into a computer running Super Hang-On, the modified toy can steer and control the game through its physical handlebars.
What makes the modification reversible
The 2022 account says the added wiring can be disconnected and the original buttons reconnected, restoring the toy’s original function. In a 5 September 2024 Time Extension report, Tilley said reverting it leaves an additional hole for the USB cable. So the electronics can be removed, but the later description indicates that the toy may retain a physical mark from the mod.

Was it a Raspberry Pi Pico or a Pi Zero?
The reports identify different boards, and do not explain whether they describe separate versions of the project or whether one account is mistaken.
| Account | Board identified | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| AUSRETROGAMER, 18 January 2022 | Raspberry Pi Pico | The Pico is programmed as a USB joystick connected to the steering sensor and three handlebar buttons. |
| Time Extension, 5 September 2024 | Raspberry Pi Zero | Tilley’s quoted description says, “It uses a Raspberry Pi-Zero,” and mentions reverting the toy with an additional USB-cable hole. |
That difference is unresolved in the available accounts, so it would be inaccurate to state that both reports confirm the same board or that one is definitively the final hardware.

What the reports do—and do not—establish
The published descriptions explain the basic idea and identify the steering sensor, the Pico-based setup in the 2022 account, and the three handlebar buttons. They do not provide a complete build guide or parts specification: for example, the potentiometer’s resistance and shaft dimensions are not stated. There is also no published latency measurement or independent performance benchmark, so the reports support describing the toy as a working controller, not making claims about its measured responsiveness.
