But God of War (2018) does not clearly confirm that name in the official material reviewed here, so it is best treated as a plausible interpretation—not established game canon. The bird is also separate from Odin’s smaller collectible Ravens.
Why players think the bird is Hraesvelgr
The creature’s immense size and its appearance in Helheim make Hraesvelgr a natural candidate. In Norse mythology, Hraesvelgr is a giant eagle associated with the realm of the dead, which helps explain the community identification. That mythological fit, however, does not prove the 2018 game intends the bird to be Hraesvelgr.

The official material cited here does not provide an in-game line, text entry, or developer statement naming the large bird. The careful answer is therefore that players commonly call it Hraesvelgr, while its identity in God of War (2018) remains unconfirmed by those sources.
Is it one of Odin’s Ravens?
No. The giant bird is an environmental creature seen at a distance; Odin’s Ravens are smaller collectibles placed around the realms. A Game of Guides / SuperSoluce guide dated October 5, 2018 lists six Odin’s Ravens in Helheim, with locations: Ravens: Helheim.

What the collectibles say about exploration
Santa Monica Studio’s Lead Player Investment Designer Anthony DiMento described exploration as one of the game’s core design pillars: “God of War was built around three core pillars that would influence all design decisions for the project: Combat, Father/Son, and Exploration.” In the same developer article, he explains that the exploration team added optional activity beyond the critical path.
DiMento also places “Labors, Ravens, Challenges” in an activity tier of checklists, milestones, and stat counters without narrative support. That is useful context for separating the collectible Ravens from a large background creature that invites a lore question; it does not establish the giant bird’s name. Where to encounter the bird
Look toward the distant scenery while exploring Helheim in God of War (2018). The game’s Norse-world adventure follows Kratos and his son Atreus; PlayStation identifies the title’s PS4 edition on its God of War game page. The sighting works as an atmospheric detail, but the available official references do not supply a confirmed name or a definitive explanation of the creature’s role.
