To connect a Bluetooth-capable Xbox controller, turn it on, hold its Connect button until the Xbox button flashes, then select Xbox Wireless Controller in Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone. Not every Xbox One controller has Bluetooth, and a successful pairing does not mean every iPhone game supports a controller.
Check that your Xbox controller can connect
Apple lists these Xbox controllers as supported with Apple devices: the Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth (Model 1708), Xbox Wireless Controller for Xbox Series S, Xbox Wireless Controller for Xbox Series X, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and Xbox Adaptive Controller. See Apple’s supported-controller list.
| Controller | iPhone Bluetooth use | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth, Model 1708 | Yes | Apple explicitly lists it. |
| Xbox Series X or Series S controller | Yes | Apple explicitly lists both. |
| Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 | Yes | Apple explicitly lists it; individual game features can vary. |
| Xbox Adaptive Controller | Yes | Apple explicitly lists it; it is designed to work with external adaptive devices. |
| Original or early Xbox One wireless controller | Not necessarily | Some revisions lack Bluetooth. Check the model rather than relying on the Xbox One name. |
| Xbox 360 Wireless Controller | No direct Bluetooth pairing | It uses a different wireless system. |
| Wired Xbox controller | Depends on the setup | A compatible controller, cable, iPhone port, and any required adapter must all work together; Bluetooth is the simpler route. |
For an Xbox One controller, check its model information on the controller or in the battery compartment. The plastic around the Xbox button can also offer a clue: on many Bluetooth-capable Xbox One models it is integrated into the front face, while on older models it may be a separate section. Treat that appearance as a clue, not a definitive test. If you cannot identify the revision, try pairing; whether it appears in the iPhone’s Bluetooth list is a practical check.
Before you start, charge the controller, keep it near the iPhone, and disconnect it from other devices that might claim the connection. You will also need a game or service that accepts controller input.

Pair the controller with your iPhone
- Turn on the controller. Insert batteries or charge its battery, then press the Xbox button.
- Enter pairing mode. Press and hold the small Connect button near the controller’s top edge until the Xbox button flashes rapidly.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the iPhone. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and switch Bluetooth on if needed.
- Select the controller. Wait for Xbox Wireless Controller to appear under Other Devices, then tap it.
- Confirm the connection. The controller should move to My Devices and show Connected.
Apple’s Xbox controller pairing instructions and Game Controller documentation use the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings for this process. Use the Connected status in Settings as confirmation; a flashing or steady controller light alone is not a reliable confirmation across every model.
Test it in a game
Bluetooth pairing tells you that the iPhone recognizes the controller. It does not guarantee that a particular game accepts it. Apple recommends looking for the controller icon on a game’s App Store product page; its Great With Controllers collection is another place to find controller-compatible games.

- Open a game that supports controllers. If the game was already open when you paired, quit and reopen it.
- Check whether the game displays controller prompts or changes its input icons.
- Test the sticks, triggers, bumpers, D-pad, face buttons, and menu buttons.
If only some inputs work, the Bluetooth connection may be fine: games differ in which controls and features they use. Vibration, headset audio, button remapping, motion controls, and Elite-specific functions are not guaranteed across games.
Use it with Xbox Cloud Gaming or Remote Play
Xbox Cloud Gaming
Cloud Gaming streams games from Microsoft rather than from a console in your home. Microsoft says it works on supported phones and tablets through supported browsers and requires a compatible device, controller, and suitable internet connection. Access to a game depends on the current access route: some supported free-to-play games may be available without a subscription, while other catalog games require an eligible plan. Check Xbox Cloud Gaming for current device, access, and subscription details.

Xbox Remote Play
Remote Play streams games from your own Xbox console; it is different from Cloud Gaming, which streams from Microsoft’s servers. The iPhone controller pairing steps are the same, but Remote Play has separate console and network setup requirements. Check Xbox’s current Remote Play requirements for your console and account before relying on it; controller pairing alone does not configure Remote Play.
Troubleshoot connection and input problems
| Symptom | Possible cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Controller does not appear in Bluetooth | It is not in pairing mode, is connected to another device, has low battery, or lacks Bluetooth. | Turn it on and hold Connect until the Xbox button flashes rapidly. Charge it, move it close to the iPhone, disconnect nearby hosts, toggle iPhone Bluetooth off and on, and verify the controller model. |
| Controller appears, but pairing fails | A stale pairing record or another device may be interfering. | In iPhone Bluetooth settings, tap the information button beside the controller under My Devices and choose Forget This Device. Restart the controller and iPhone, then pair again. |
| iPhone shows Connected, but a game ignores it | The game may not support controllers or may need to be relaunched. | Check the game’s App Store listing, look for an in-game controller setting, reopen it, and test another controller-compatible game. |
| Only some buttons or features work | The game may support only certain inputs or features. | Check the game’s control settings and test the controller in another supported title. Do not assume that vibration, audio, or remapping is available. |
| Controller reconnects to the Xbox instead | The console or another remembered host may be taking the connection. | Move the other host away or turn off its Bluetooth while pairing. On supported controller models and firmware, double-pressing the pair button can switch between a Bluetooth host and Xbox Wireless; this is not available on every controller. See Microsoft’s controller firmware update notes. |
| iPhone reports that a firmware update is required | The controller firmware needs updating. | Follow Microsoft’s update instructions linked from Apple’s Xbox controller support page. The method depends on the controller and available Xbox or Windows equipment; re-pair afterward if needed. |
| Connection is intermittent | Low battery, distance, or wireless interference may be involved. | Charge the controller, keep it near the iPhone, reduce nearby wireless interference, and restart both devices before trying again. |
If the controller still will not pair, test it with another compatible iPhone or iPad if available. That helps distinguish an issue with the controller from one with the original phone.

Choose an alternative if your controller is not suitable
- Already own a Bluetooth-capable Xbox controller: Pair it first. If you want to hold the phone and controller together, add a compatible phone clip.
- Have an older non-Bluetooth controller: A Bluetooth-capable Xbox controller is the straightforward full-size replacement. Microsoft’s controller lineup includes standard and Elite models; prices and editions can change.
- Want a handheld layout: A phone-mounted controller such as Backbone One keeps the phone between the controls. Match the Lightning or USB-C version to the iPhone’s port and check case fit. Microsoft’s Backbone One for iOS page describes the Lightning model, while the Backbone One Xbox Edition announcement covers a USB-C model.
- Want premium mobile controls: The Backbone Pro Xbox Edition announcement describes wired USB-C and Bluetooth modes, a built-in battery, and additional controls. Its reported $179.99 USD ERP is a manufacturer price signal, not a guaranteed current checkout price.
- Need adaptive controls: Apple lists the Xbox Adaptive Controller as supported. It is an accessibility-focused hub rather than a conventional handheld gamepad and may require compatible external devices.
A wired connection is another possibility only when the specific controller, cable, iPhone port, and adapter combination is compatible. Apple’s developer documentation says a compatible controller connected by USB can connect automatically, but that does not establish that every Xbox controller-and-cable setup will work.
