CM Storm Trigger Keyboard Review: Is It Worth Buying Used in 2026?

The CM Storm Trigger still offers five dedicated macro keys and a sturdy full-size design, but age, legacy software and six-key rollover make condition and price decisive.

The CM Storm Trigger is still an appealing used mechanical keyboard if you specifically want its five dedicated macro keys, full-size layout and heavy, stable chassis. It is a risky choice at a premium, though: it is an aging, discontinued board with soldered switches, six-key rollover and software whose current availability and compatibility are uncertain. Buy one only after confirming the exact model and testing every key, light and port.

What the CM Storm Trigger is

The original CM Storm Trigger is a wired, full-size mechanical gaming keyboard in Cooler Master’s SGK-6000 family. It combines a number pad with five dedicated macro keys on the left, media and lighting controls, a Windows-key lock, red backlighting, a detachable wrist rest and a two-port USB 2.0 pass-through hub. It was positioned as a more feature-rich option than Cooler Master’s simpler QuickFire Pro. Hardware Secrets’ review discusses that positioning; TweakTown’s review describes a 109-key Green-switch unit with 64 KB onboard memory and a detachable braided cable.

The exact model matters. SGK-6000 suffixes identify different switch and regional versions; key legends, layout and switch availability vary. The Green-switch unit reviewed by TweakTown, for example, was SGK-6000-GKCG1-US. The related Trigger-Z is a separate later model, not simply another name for this keyboard.

Connectivity Detachable braided USB cable and two USB 2.0 pass-through ports Hub power capacity should not be assumed to suit demanding devices. Best Buy
Wrist rest Detachable Documented in retail listings, but confirm it is present and intact in a used package. Best Buy

Build, footprint and ergonomics

The Trigger is a large, heavy desk keyboard rather than a portable one. Hardware Secrets reports a weight of about 2.78 lb (1.3 kg). Its steel reinforcement plate, rubber feet and thick chassis help it stay planted during typing and play, but rigidity is not a promise that an old board’s switches, LEDs, cable or USB ports still work.

TweakTown describes a tall profile: nearly an inch at the front, slightly over an inch at the rear, and about 1.5 inches with the rear feet raised. The broad detachable wrist rest can make the blunt front edge more comfortable if you have enough desk depth. It should support your palms during pauses, not force your wrists upward while typing. Raising the rear feet can increase wrist extension, and the bulky footprint may be a poor fit for a shallow desk or a low-profile preference.

Heavy switches can add to fatigue. TweakTown’s reviewer said the Green switches felt tiring at first and that typing accuracy improved after adapting; that is one reviewer’s experience, not a general result to expect.

Which switch variant should you choose?

Reviews document Black, Blue, Brown and Red versions, while TweakTown tested a Green-switch edition. This range reflects different models, regions or revisions; it does not establish that every option was sold everywhere. Overclockers Club’s earlier coverage and later reviews do not give one universal launch configuration. Check the underside model label and ask for clear evidence of the actual switch version rather than trusting a generic listing title.

  • Red: Linear and relatively light-feeling, for users who prefer a smooth press without a tactile bump.
  • Black: Linear and heavier than Red, potentially a better fit if you prefer more resistance or tend to bottom out hard.
  • Brown: Tactile without a pronounced click; a middle ground for mixed typing and gaming, but not silent.
  • Blue: Tactile and clicky. The sound can be disruptive in a shared room.
  • Green: Clicky and stiffer than Blue; TweakTown characterized it as the heavier, more resistant Blue-style option.

The switches are soldered, not hot-swappable. Replacing one requires opening the case and desoldering and soldering components, so a faulty switch is not a quick plug-in repair.

Gaming and typing: useful features, dated limits

Gaming controls

The five left-side macro keys can be useful for games or workflows that benefit from dedicated bindings, while the full-size layout keeps the number pad available. A Windows-key lock helps avoid accidental desktop interruptions. The steel-plated weight also suits a keyboard that stays on one desk.

The original Trigger’s documented six-key rollover is adequate for many ordinary game combinations, but it is not full-key rollover or NKRO. Do not infer that every combination of simultaneous keys will register. Best Buy lists a 1 ms response specification and TweakTown reports a 1000 Hz polling rate for its Green model; these are product specifications, not proof that the board is meaningfully faster in play. Input latency also depends on more than polling frequency. Multiplayer and tournament rules may restrict macros, so check the rules for the specific game before using automation.

Typing and noise

Typing feel depends heavily on the switch variant, condition of the individual unit and whether the tall chassis suits your desk position. Blue and Green switches are clicky; Red and Black avoid the click mechanism but still make sound when keys bottom out. Brown has a tactile bump but is not silent. A listing that says only “mechanical” does not provide enough information to judge noise or feel.

Backlighting, macros and legacy software

Lighting and physical controls

TweakTown reports full illumination and a selective mode that lights the logo, macro area, WASD keys and arrows, with five brightness levels. The lighting is red rather than RGB. Its restrained color may suit some desks, but it offers less flexibility, and a used board may have dim, uneven or failed LEDs. Ask for a photo or video of every lighting zone and mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Profiles and macros

For the Green-switch unit it reviewed, TweakTown describes key reassignment, profile management, macro creation, on-the-fly recording and multiple macro timing modes. It reports storage for up to five profiles in the keyboard’s 64 KB onboard memory, with additional profiles stored on the PC. Treat these as features documented for that reviewed configuration, not a guarantee that every revision or every function works today without the original utility.

  • Rapid Trigger Tech - Combine the Hall Effect magnetic switch with rapid trigger ON via software, the actuation point can be 0.1mm precision adjusted between 0.1-3.9 mm (The actual effect of the 0.1-0.2 mm actuation point may be affected by the normal tolerances of the components), ultra-precise actuation point combo with dynamic activation/deactivation defines your one-tap-kill.
  • 8K Hyper-Polling - REDRAGON’s most advanced gaming keyboard gears the native 8,000Hz hyper-polling response. Quickly connected with a detachable USB-A to USB-C cable to transmit inputs up to 8x faster (0.125ms lowest latency), always gets pre-acted in the game.
  • Noise Dampening x 3 - Equipped with 3.5mm EVA foam, bottom socket foam, and silicone bottom pad. Significantly reduce the hollow noise, creating dampened and ultra-clean typing acoustics, making each keystroke satisfying and comfortable.
  • 2 Actions In 1 Tap - K707 HE professional software also allows two different movements assigned in one key by different key actuation pressure, enabling you to punch out 2 styles with only one tap and simplifying the complex skills combo at max.

Basic USB typing is distinct from profile editing, remapping and macro configuration. The board may still work as a standard keyboard even if its old configuration software cannot be found or installed, but current software availability and compatibility are not established here. Do not rely on an old download mirror or assume compatibility with a present-day operating system. A Best Buy listing calls a Trigger model Mac-compatible, but that historical listing does not guarantee modern support for vendor configuration tools. Best Buy’s product page

If a used board types unexpectedly

  1. Disconnect and reconnect the keyboard, then test it in a basic text editor.
  2. Test without the CM Storm utility; if it causes remapping, disable or remove it.
  3. Try another computer to distinguish a host or software issue from a keyboard issue.
  4. Test the main keyboard connection and the USB hub separately.
  5. If a physical key is intermittent or sticky, software reinstallation will not fix the switch or spill damage.

USB hub and cable: convenience, not a powered dock

The original Trigger has two USB 2.0 pass-through ports and a detachable braided cable. TweakTown also notes a rear DC 5V input on its reviewed unit, but its package did not include a power cable. Do not assume the hub can power an external drive, phone or lighting accessory; treat it as a convenience for low-power devices and test both ports individually. If the keyboard is missing its cable, verify the keyboard-side connector before shopping for a replacement.

Trigger versus Trigger-Z

The Trigger-Z is a separate model with different documented specifications. Cooler Master’s product sheet lists 64-key rollover, up to five profiles, 15 macro keys per profile and a detachable wrist rest for the Trigger-Z. Those figures should not be attributed to the original SGK-6000 Trigger. Cooler Master Trigger-Z product sheet

What to inspect before buying one used

As of August 16, 2026, Best Buy identifies the SGK-6000-GKCL1 as no longer available new, so treat the Trigger as a used or old-stock product, not a current mainstream keyboard. Historical prices do not establish a fair used price: Overclockers Club discussed about $120 at launch, TweakTown reported a $129.99 MSRP and a temporary $104.99 store price for the Green edition, and NikkTech later reported $94.99 for a Red model in the United States and about €110 in Europe. These are dated, version-specific figures, not current asking-price guidance.

Judge a listing by condition, exact switch and layout, completeness, seller return policy and total cost. Missing or damaged accessories and functions should lower its appeal; do not pay a premium merely because a historical review praised the build.

Ask the seller before purchase

  • Request a clear photograph of the underside model label and the key legends; confirm switch type and regional layout.
  • Ask whether every normal key, all five macro keys, media controls and Windows-key lock work.
  • Ask for a photo or video showing each backlight mode and brightness level.
  • Confirm both USB hub ports work and ask whether there has been liquid damage or corrosion.
  • Confirm the detachable cable and wrist rest are included, with intact clips and feet.
  • Ask about intermittent keys, double registration, damaged connectors, cracked plastic or missing parts.

Test it when it arrives

  1. Connect it and test every letter, number, modifier, navigation key and number-pad key.
  2. Press keys repeatedly to check for missed or doubled input; lightly tap Space, Enter, Shift and Backspace for stabilizer rattle or sticking.
  3. Test every macro key, media control and the Windows-key lock.
  4. Cycle all lighting modes and brightness levels, checking for dark or uneven areas.
  5. Gently move the cable while typing to check for connection dropouts, then test each USB hub port.
  6. Try the board on a second computer if any behavior is unclear.

These are sensible checks for an old used mechanical keyboard, not a claim that every Trigger has a particular defect rate. Common age-related issues to look for include chatter, sticky switches after spills, uneven LEDs, worn keycaps, damaged cable or USB connections, weak hub performance, cracked feet or wrist-rest clips, and unavailable legacy software.

Should you buy the Trigger or a modern alternative?

Choose a modern board if you want hot-swappable switches, current configuration support, flexible lighting or a warranty rather than the Trigger’s particular macro bank and construction. These examples have different feature trade-offs; they are not exact replacements for the Trigger.

Keyboard Why consider it What it does not replicate
Keychron V6 Full-size layout and QMK support. The official page showed one assembled configuration at $64.99 on sale versus $89.99; configuration and availability vary. It does not have the Trigger’s five dedicated left-side macro keys. The captured price is not a guaranteed current price.
Keychron V6 8K Official listing describes 8K polling, hot-swappable support and QMK Launcher; the captured price was $84.99. It lacks the Trigger’s dedicated macro bank, and a higher polling specification does not automatically mean a visible gaming advantage. Price and stock vary.
Cooler Master CK552 Current Cooler Master product page lists Gateron Red, Brown and Blue options, RGB, macro recording, multimedia controls through Fn combinations, and a two-year warranty. It does not reproduce the Trigger’s five dedicated macro keys; its listed cable is fixed, and it uses Gateron switches rather than Cherry MX.
Logitech G413 SE A mainstream gaming-oriented option; the Logitech US shop showed a captured sale price of $54.99 versus $89.99. It is not a feature-for-feature substitute for the Trigger’s dedicated macros, detachable wrist rest and USB hub. Sale pricing can change.

The captured prices above are dated signals, not a live price check. Compare current configuration, stock, shipping and warranty before buying. If the Trigger’s five dedicated macro keys are not essential, a current full-size board is generally the more straightforward long-term choice.

Who should buy it—and who should skip it?

  • Consider it used if you want a full-size layout, specifically value five dedicated macro keys or a particular Cherry MX feel, and find a clean, complete, fully tested unit at a modest price.
  • Skip it if you need wireless operation, a compact or low-profile board, hot-swap switches, modern configuration software, dependable replacement parts or a current warranty.
  • Avoid Blue or Green if clicky noise would disturb others; avoid Black or Green if you know heavier presses cause hand fatigue.
  • Do not pay a premium for an untested unit, missing wrist rest or cable, failed lights or ports, or a listing that does not identify its model and switch variant.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
