CurseForge itself is not known to be a virus, but malicious files have been distributed through the platform. Its app, the Overwolf components some installations use, and the mods or modpacks users download are separate things with separate risks. CurseForge says direct downloads are scanned and that it added safeguards after a 2023 Minecraft malware incident, but scanning cannot guarantee every file is harmless.
For Minecraft players, the practical rule is to download from official project pages, treat JARs as software that can run code, and be especially careful with files imported from friends or third-party links.
What are CurseForge, its app, and Overwolf?
CurseForge is a website and service for finding game modifications, addons, and modpacks. Its app helps install and manage that content. Some CurseForge app installations use Overwolf, a separate platform; CurseForge’s download page also offers a standalone app option. These distinctions matter: a malicious mod distributed through CurseForge is not the same as malware in the CurseForge app or Overwolf software.
- CurseForge website: A place to discover and download projects.
- CurseForge app: A manager for supported games and their content.
- Overwolf: A platform used by some app installations, with its own integrations and features.
- Mods and modpacks: Third-party files created by project authors. Their safety depends on the files themselves as well as how they are delivered.
CurseForge offers an official app page and a download page. Use those rather than search ads, pop-ups, unofficial mirrors, or installers shared through file-hosting services. Overwolf’s official app catalog is at overwolf.com/appstore.

What happened in the 2023 Minecraft malware incident?
CurseForge said a targeted attack against the modded Minecraft community began on June 7, 2023. Attackers created author accounts to upload infected JAR files and also used a compromised creator account to publish infected updates to established projects. CurseForge described malware that could download additional payloads and seek browser cookies, passwords, and login information. The wider campaign was also reported by security researchers as Fractureiser; see the WithSecure June 2023 threat report.
CurseForge reported approximately 6,500 downloads of infected files during the incident. That number is downloads, not confirmed successful infections: downloading a file, running it, and having a payload successfully deploy are different events. CurseForge said it blocked attacker accounts, removed affected files, analyzed the malware, scanned its database, and added detection rules and security checks. The 2023 event is a serious historical security incident, not by itself evidence that the outbreak is ongoing.
Is CurseForge safe to use now?
CurseForge’s current safety guidance says files downloaded directly through its website or app are scanned for malware and malicious code. The company also warns that it cannot scan or verify modpack files sent by friends and imported through the app, particularly custom override files. Its Studios moderation documentation describes antivirus scanning that includes ESET and ClamAV, but that documentation covers its Studios/API moderation system; it should not be taken as proof of identical coverage for every consumer download workflow.

These controls reduce risk, but no public repository can guarantee every upload, update, compromised account, or imported file is harmless. CurseForge appears to be a legitimate platform with safeguards, while its history shows that even a major repository can distribute malicious content temporarily. Can a CurseForge mod infect your computer?
Yes, in principle. A Minecraft Java mod commonly arrives as a JAR, a format that can contain code executed by the game process. It is software, not a passive document. The 2023 incident showed that an infected JAR could be distributed through projects that appeared legitimate, including through a compromised creator account. A popular project is not automatically safe, and a clean scan is useful evidence rather than proof of safety.
Pay particular attention to the delivery path. A mod downloaded directly from a project’s normal CurseForge file page is different from a ZIP profile or override package sent in a Discord message, direct message, Google Drive, MediaFire, or other external link. CurseForge specifically says friend-supplied and imported files may not receive the same scanning as direct downloads. A launcher also cannot sanitize every third-party file it installs.

Files and requests that merit extra caution
- Unofficial mirrors, reuploads, or projects with nearly identical names.
- A modpack containing unrelated executables, scripts, installers, or binaries.
- Instructions to disable antivirus or Windows security protections.
- A “mod” that asks you to run a separate
.exe,.bat,.cmd, PowerShell command, or Java program outside the normal launcher process. - Unexpected ownership changes, suspicious updates, or unusually urgent instructions.
- “Optimization” or “free cosmetics” downloads that require unrelated installers.
- A login page that does not belong to the official Minecraft or Microsoft authentication flow.
Server operators should apply the same caution to plugins: server-side code is executable software too, and its environment differs from a player’s client.
How to download and install more safely
- Go to the official service directly. Start at CurseForge’s official site or app, not a search-result ad or a download mirror.
- Check the project and file details. Confirm the project name, author, Minecraft version, mod loader, and file version before downloading.
- Use the project’s normal file download. Be cautious of external links or instructions to fetch a separate installer.
- Inspect imported profiles. Do not import an arbitrary ZIP or custom override bundle without checking its contents and source.
- Keep protections enabled and updated. Update your operating system, Java, official Minecraft launcher, and antivirus definitions. Never disable protection just to install a mod.
- Limit the impact of mistakes. Use a standard account rather than an administrator account when practical, and back up important worlds and files.
- Investigate a suspicious file. Use your operating system’s security tools and, where appropriate, a multi-engine service such as VirusTotal. CurseForge also recommends VirusTotal in its suspicious-file guidance. A zero-detection result is not a guarantee.
- Do not resurrect removed files from mirrors. If a project or update is removed or reported as suspicious, avoid old copies until the issue is understood.
What should you do with a suspicious mod?
If you downloaded it but never ran it
- Do not open the JAR or launch the Minecraft profile that uses it.
- Delete or quarantine the file, then run a full scan with your operating system’s security software. If the result is inconclusive, use a second reputable scanner.
- Check the relevant modpack or instance folders for duplicate or modified JAR files, and review recent downloads and browser history.
If you launched Minecraft with it
Treat the system as potentially compromised rather than assuming that removing one file fixes everything. Stop the affected instance. CurseForge’s June 2023 infected-mod detection and recovery page provides an incident-specific tool and instructions; it is not a universal scanner for every future threat. The guidance recommends scanning folders containing Minecraft mod JARs and using independent malware scanners.
- Run the CurseForge guidance for the applicable operating system and scan relevant mod folders, followed by an independent malware scan.
- From a separate, known-clean device, change important passwords and revoke active sessions where available. Prioritize Microsoft, email, password-manager, financial, social-media, and gaming accounts.
- Enable multifactor authentication and check for unfamiliar browser extensions, startup entries, scheduled tasks, and processes.
- If malware remains suspected, restore from a clean backup or perform a clean operating-system installation.
Credential theft may be silent, and the original mod can be gone while exposed passwords or session tokens remain at risk.

Why might antivirus flag CurseForge or Overwolf?
A warning is neither proof of infection nor proof of a false positive. Installers and updaters can trigger heuristic detections because they download files, update themselves, access game folders, or launch other processes. A bundled component may be classified as unwanted software; an altered download or a genuinely malicious file is also possible. A detection may refer to a particular mod rather than the launcher.
Before deciding what to do, record the exact detection name, file path, download source, whether the file is digitally signed, and when the warning appeared. Note whether the alert names CurseForge, Overwolf, Java, or a specific mod, and whether other security engines agree. Stop using the file, download again only from the official page, and submit it to the antivirus vendor for review if needed. Do not create an antivirus exclusion until you understand the detection.
Overwolf and malware are not synonyms. The Overwolf and standalone choices are available through CurseForge’s official download page. Choose based on the features and integrations you want; an Overwolf ban-related support article, such as CurseForge’s explanation of game bans, is not evidence about malware detection.

Should you use Modrinth or Prism Launcher instead?
Another launcher can change the interface and the sources you use, but it cannot make third-party code harmless. The right choice depends on the game and the projects you need.

If you use Overwolf, download it through the official CurseForge flow or Overwolf Appstore. If you prefer fewer platform integrations, consider CurseForge’s standalone option or Modrinth where the project is available. Neither preference replaces endpoint protection or careful file sourcing. Support subscriptions are not security products: CurseForge Premium is advertised for features such as ad removal, themes, and creator support, while Modrinth+ is an ad-free and creator-support option.
