Valve is positioning the Steam Machine as a compact gaming PC, not a console priced to match PlayStation or Xbox. The announced U.S. launch prices are $1,049 for 512GB and $1,349 for 2TB, with sales scheduled to begin June 29, 2026. Valve says its target is a self-built PC with roughly equivalent performance; whether that represents good value depends on the PC you compare it with, the storage you need and how much you value a ready-to-use living-room setup.
What the Steam Machine costs
Ars Technica reported these prices and configurations from Valve’s announcement:
| Configuration or add-on | Announced U.S. price |
|---|---|
| Steam Machine, 512GB | $1,049 |
| Steam Machine, 2TB | $1,349 |
| Optional Steam Controller bundle add-on | $79 |
The prices are before any taxes or shipping. Valve announced June 29, 2026, as the sale date. Availability and prices can change; Ars Technica reported that component shortages and higher memory and storage costs pushed the system above Valve’s earlier target, which the company said was no longer viable.
Why Valve compares it with a PC
Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais described the target as the price window for building a PC from parts that reaches “basically the same level of performance,” as reported by GameDeveloper on November 25, 2025. He also characterized the price as more in line with the current PC market in an interview reported by Tom’s Hardware on November 23, 2025.

That framing matters: the relevant comparison is not simply the price of a console, or the sum of a few PC components. A fair PC comparison should aim for similar gaming performance and account for the cost and effort of a compact enclosure, quiet cooling, assembly and living-room control. A similarly equipped prebuilt mini gaming PC may be a more useful reference than a conventional tower with more room for upgrades.
How its hardware shapes the comparison
Valve’s announced system combines a custom six-core AMD Zen 4 CPU with RDNA 3 graphics, 28 compute units and 8GB of dedicated VRAM. It also has 16GB of system DDR5 memory and runs Linux-based SteamOS. Valve presents it as suitable for 4K TVs using upscaling, but its engineers describe rendering at 1080p or 1440p as the likely sweet spot for newer, demanding games. Older or less demanding titles may run at native 4K.
Those figures describe the hardware, not a guaranteed frame rate. Results vary with each game’s demands, graphics settings, render resolution and upscaling mode; future games may also place greater demands on the system. Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais noted that current and upcoming games are the ones most likely to stress performance, in an interview reported by Tom’s Hardware in 2026.

- RYZEN 7 H 255 CPU - The Ryzen 7 H 255 is a chip from the Hawk Point family and is an upgraded version of the older Ryzen 7 8745H and has 8 cores (16 threads thanks to SMT support) that run at up to 4.9 GHz, together with the powerful Radeon 780M iGPU. Unlike Zen 3, Zen 4 offers AVX512 support along with other improvements such as larger caches/registers/buffers across the board.
- GAMING PC - The Radeon 780M (12 CUs / 768 shaders, up to 2,600 MHz) can drive multiple displays simultaneously with a resolution of up to 8K. Hardware encoding and hardware decoding of the most common video codecs (AV1, AVC, HEVC) is also no problem; playing the latest games on FSR settings without issues.
- WHY CHOOSE DDR5 5600MHz DUAL CHANNEL (2×16GB): With a 5600MHz clock—a 17% frequency uplift over 4800MHz—this kit delivers massive bandwidth gains that elevate real-world performance. Gamers enjoy higher minimum FPS and less stutter in open-world and sim titles for a smoother competitive experience. Video editors and 3D creators benefit from faster 4K/8K timeline scrubbing, quicker renders in DaVinci Resolve and Premiere, and swifter asset loading. For AI/LLM workloads, the superior throughput reduces I/O bottlenecks, cuts token generation latency, and accelerates model fine-tuning by keeping processing cores fed with data—so you wait less and create more.
- 32GB DDR5 RAM + 512GB SSD - The K12 mini computer is equipped with Dual 16GB (Total 32GB) SO-DIMM DDR5 5600MHz memory sticks. 512GB PCIE 4.0 SSD Drive with 3x M.2 2280 Expansion slots. Each slot capable of reading up to 8TB. (24TB MAX)
- QUAD SCREEN 4K DISPLAY SUPPORT - K12 Mini PC support 4-screen 4K/8K output via HDMI 2.1 (8K@60Hz), DisplayPort 1.4 (4K@60Hz), and USB Type-C Transfer speed (supporting PD3.0/DP1.4/DATA). Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
What makes it different from a console purchase
Console prices make a useful reference point for the kind of living-room device some buyers want, but they are not Valve’s stated pricing target. GameDeveloper reported these contemporary U.S. console prices in 2025:
| Console | Reported U.S. price |
|---|---|
| PS5 | $549.99 |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $499.99 |
| PS5 Pro | $749 |
| Xbox Series S | $400 |
| Xbox Series X | $650 |
These are dated reference prices, not a current guarantee; retail pricing and availability change. Their main use here is to show the gap in upfront cost. The Steam Machine costs substantially more than those listed console prices, but the comparison does not establish that the devices deliver equivalent performance, use the same software ecosystem or have the same total cost over time.
The Steam Machine’s additional value is in PC gaming and convenience features: SteamOS, a small enclosure, quiet operation, HDMI-CEC and controller integration for TV play. Optional Steam Controller bundle pricing is separate. For game costs, the buyer’s existing library, access to other PC storefronts, multiplayer policies and any console subscription costs can all affect the longer-term comparison.

Storage and upgrade flexibility affect value
The 512GB and 2TB versions differ by $300 at the announced prices. That choice affects how many large games can stay installed at once, so buyers with substantial libraries should weigh capacity against the cost of managing downloads or removing games to make room.
A compact integrated PC generally offers less upgrade flexibility than a conventional desktop, but the available information does not establish exactly which Steam Machine parts users can replace. Check Valve’s final serviceability documentation before assuming that a component can be upgraded—or that it cannot.
Who should consider the Steam Machine?
Existing Steam players seeking a TV setup
The strongest case is for someone with a substantial Steam library who wants a quiet, compact device for the living room and does not want to assemble or tune a mini-ITX PC. Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat said the machine’s value is inherently tied in part to the value of a buyer’s Steam library, as reported by Tom’s Hardware in 2026.

Buyers comparing it with a compact gaming PC
Compare it with a mini gaming PC or prebuilt system that can deliver similar gaming performance in a similarly compact, quiet setup. Include the practical value of SteamOS, controller connectivity and avoiding assembly; do not treat a cheaper parts list as a like-for-like system if it omits those needs.
People starting a PC library from scratch
If you do not already own PC games, include the cost and effort of building a library and consider whether SteamOS and the PC storefront ecosystem suit you. Also compare the machine with your upgrade plans: a conventional desktop may be a better fit if you value future component changes more than a small, ready-to-use TV device.
