Xbox error 0x87e50033 is a game-or-app launch failure, not a diagnosis of one specific broken component. Microsoft’s code-specific guidance recommends fully quitting the affected title, waiting at least 10 seconds, then launching it again. If that does not work, check Xbox service status and whether the problem affects one title or the whole console before trying more disruptive fixes.
These steps are for Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. The error page is for Xbox consoles; do not apply console instructions to the Windows Xbox app.
Start with the safest checks
Check Xbox service status
Before reinstalling a game or resetting the console, check Xbox service status. Look for issues affecting account and profile, games and gaming, Store and subscriptions, or the specific game’s services. If Microsoft reports a relevant outage, local fixes may not help until service is restored. This page changes, so check it when the error occurs rather than relying on a past status report.
Find out whether one title or several are affected
Try another installed game and a standard app. If appropriate, test the affected game with another profile. These results are clues, not a guaranteed diagnosis:

| What happens | What to investigate next |
|---|---|
| Only one game or app fails | That title’s update, installation, add-ons, saved data, or service |
| Several games fail | Console session, Xbox services, account or entitlement, storage, or system software |
| Only online games fail | Services, network access, account, or licensing |
| Apps also fail | A broader console software or storage problem |
| The game works under another profile | The original account, license, or profile synchronization |
A streaming app working does not prove that game licensing or Xbox gaming services are available. Likewise, an offline test is not conclusive: many digital games and Game Pass titles need an online entitlement check and may not launch offline even when their installation is healthy.
Quit and relaunch the affected game
This is Microsoft’s code-specific first remedy. The aim is to close the game or app fully, rather than merely return to the dashboard or turn off the controller.
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Highlight the affected game or app.
- Press the Menu button and select Quit. If the command is unavailable, the title is already closed.
- Wait at least 10 seconds, then launch the title again.
Some software versions or localizations may label the close command differently, such as “Exit.” Use the option that fully closes the title. Microsoft’s instructions are on its 0x87e50033 support page; an indexed reproduction also shows the quit, wait, and relaunch wording.
Restart, then power-cycle the console
Restart normally first
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system, then Power.
- Select Restart console.
A restart is different from returning Home, putting the console into standby, or turning off the controller. Try the affected title after the console starts again.

Use a full power cycle if a restart is not enough
- Hold the physical power button on the console for about 10 seconds, until it shuts down.
- Disconnect the power cable and wait at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the cable, turn on the console, and try the game.
This refreshes the console’s running state and can clear a transient launch failure; it does not repair a damaged installation or physically failing drive. The timing above reflects Microsoft Community troubleshooting examples, not a code-specific diagnosis: power-button and disconnect guidance.
Check for console and game updates
Update the console
Open Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates & downloads and install any available console update. Menu wording can vary by system version; Microsoft support also identifies the console’s system update area in its support guidance.
Check the affected game’s update queue
Open My games & apps and check whether the title has a pending or incomplete update. Complete or resolve a stuck update before repeatedly uninstalling and downloading the game again.
Check the account and game entitlement
If the failure is limited to digital or Game Pass games, confirm the console is online and signed in to the Microsoft account that owns the game or subscription. Check that the subscription is active and that the title remains available through it; a Game Pass game can stop launching if it leaves the catalog or the subscription expires.

If the console is meant to share games for an account, verify its Home Xbox status. Changing that setting can affect game sharing and is not a harmless universal troubleshooting step. Sign out and back in—or remove and re-add a profile—only after simpler steps fail, and only if you know the correct account credentials. Microsoft’s support guidance emphasizes keeping the console updated and contacting support when digitally attached products remain inaccessible.
Inspect the game installation and storage
For a single affected game
- Open My games & apps and highlight the game.
- Press the Menu button and choose Manage game and add-ons.
- Review installed content and updates for anything incomplete or missing.
- If the installation appears damaged or incomplete, consider reinstalling that title after checking the safeguards below.
If storage is nearly full, free space before trying another installation. The amount required varies by game; use the title’s own stated requirements rather than assuming a universal free-space figure.
If the game is on external storage
Check that the drive appears normally and try an affected title installed on internal storage, if available. A successful internal-storage test points toward an external-drive or installation-path issue, but does not prove the drive has failed. Do not disconnect an external drive while the console is using it or writing data.
If the game is disc-based
Check that the disc is clean and readable, confirm the required game content is installed, and try another disc if available. A disc installation may still need updates or an online license check.

Reinstall only the affected game
Reinstalling is reasonable when service status is normal, the title has been quit, the console restarted or power-cycled, updates checked, and the problem remains isolated to that game. Confirm you still own the game or have access through an active subscription before removing it. Re-downloading a large title can take time and use substantial bandwidth; avoid removing the rest of your library.
Do not delete saved data as a routine fix. Cloud synchronization may protect progress, but deleting local data before confirming it has synced can risk losing progress. Reinstalling can replace damaged or incomplete game files; it will not resolve an outage, expired entitlement, or console-wide hardware problem.

If multiple games continue to fail after the steps above, the next software escalation is Reset and keep my games & apps. Have your Microsoft account credentials ready before starting.
- Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info.
- Select Reset console.
- Choose Reset and keep my games & apps.
This option resets system settings and removes accounts from the console while retaining installed games and apps. You will need to sign in again, and games or apps may need updates. It cannot recover saved data that never synchronized or repair defective storage or other hardware. Menu wording may vary by system version. Microsoft Community examples discuss this option for persistent console errors, but do not establish it as a guaranteed fix for 0x87e50033: reset and power-cycle guidance.

Reset and remove everything is a final software step, not a standard fix. Use it only if important data is backed up or synchronized and you understand it removes accounts, settings, installed games, and apps. Consider it when Microsoft Support recommends it or when preparing a console for sale, repair, or return; it is not guaranteed to resolve this error.
When to contact Xbox Support
Stop escalating local fixes and contact Xbox Support if the error persists across multiple games after a keep-games-and-apps reset, games fail immediately after a clean reinstall, updates or setup cannot complete, or the console also freezes, shuts down repeatedly, reports storage errors, or no longer recognizes storage. Failure offline as well as online is another useful detail to report, though it does not by itself prove hardware failure.
Provide the console model, exact error wording and code, affected games and apps, whether another profile works, service-status findings, steps already tried, and whether the problem began after an update, outage, or storage event. Recurring failure across many games matters more than a one-time launch error, but only Microsoft or a repair diagnosis can establish a hardware fault.
Fixes not established for this code
- Changing the region: not a generally verified fix for 0x87e50033 and can complicate Store, language, subscription, or licensing settings.
- Clearing an alternate MAC address: often suggested online, but not established by the code-specific Microsoft guidance as the primary remedy.
- “Clear cache” buttons or utilities: Xbox consoles do not provide a simple universal cache-clear button equivalent to some platforms. A power cycle is the safer description; avoid third-party cache or repair utilities.
For Windows users, the Xbox console instructions above do not apply. Microsoft documents wsreset.exe as a Microsoft Store reset step for Windows—not as a fix for an Xbox console error: Microsoft Store app support.
