Xbox error 0x87e11838 can stop a game or app from opening. Check Xbox service status, then quit and relaunch the title and restart the console before trying more disruptive fixes. The precise cause can vary; Xbox has a dedicated support page for this error, but do not assume the code always means a network, cache, or licensing fault. Before clearing local saves or resetting the console, make sure your progress has synchronized with Xbox services.
Try these quick fixes first
- Check Xbox service status.
- Quit the affected game or app completely, then open it again.
- Restart the console from its Power menu.
- If needed, power-cycle the console before moving on to network or installation repairs.
These steps do not intentionally remove installed games or cloud saves. Avoid unplugging the console while it is installing an update or writing data unless it is frozen and cannot be shut down normally.
Check whether Xbox services are disrupted
On the Xbox status page, look for incidents affecting Xbox Network/Core Services, accounts and profiles, games, the Store, subscriptions, cloud gaming, or the specific game’s online services. If a relevant incident is active, wait for Microsoft or the game publisher to resolve it and try again. Local repairs—and especially a console reset—are unlikely to help during an outage.
Quit the title, restart, then power-cycle
Quit and relaunch the game or app
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Highlight the affected game or app.
- Press the Menu button and select Quit.
- Reopen the title.
Quitting first ensures you are not simply returning to a title that remained suspended in the same failed state.

Restart from the console menu
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system.
- Select Power, then Restart console.
Menu labels can vary slightly with the console generation, language, and Xbox operating-system build.
Perform a complete power cycle
- Hold the console’s physical power button for about 10 seconds, until the Xbox shuts down completely.
- Disconnect the power cable from the console or power supply.
- Wait at least 30 seconds, then reconnect the cable.
- Turn on the Xbox and retry the title.
This refreshes the console’s power state; it is not a factory reset and does not intentionally uninstall games or delete cloud saves. The original Xbox One uses an external power brick, which may also need to be disconnected. The general 30-second wait procedure is described in this Xbox cache and power-cycle guide.
Test the network if online access or several titles are affected
- Open Settings > General > Network settings.
- Select Test network connection; if available, also run Test multiplayer connection.
- Restart the modem and router, then test again.
- If possible, connect by Ethernet or briefly test a different network, such as a phone hotspot.
Microsoft’s Xbox network troubleshooting page is another starting point. If the title works on a different network, focus on the router, NAT, DNS, firewall, or internet provider rather than resetting the console. Changing DNS should not be the first step.

Optional: clear the Alternate MAC address
Consider this only when the error accompanies sign-in, multiplayer, or other connectivity trouble—not when one offline title alone fails.
- Open Settings > General > Network settings > Advanced settings.
- Select Alternate MAC address, then Clear.
- Confirm the restart and reconnect to Wi-Fi if prompted.
If you did not intentionally configure an alternate MAC address, clearing it resets that stored network value. Microsoft Community users have suggested this for some sign-in and network problems, but it is not a confirmed 0x87e11838-specific fix: community troubleshooting guidance.
Install available console and game updates
Check for a console update
- Open Settings > System > Updates.
- Install any available update, then restart and test the game or app.
Microsoft support guidance identifies Settings > System > Updates as the console update location: Microsoft support.

Highlight the game or app, press Menu, and look for Manage game and add-ons and its update options. Wording and available options can differ between Xbox One and Series consoles.
Use the symptoms to choose the next step
| What you see | What to investigate next |
|---|---|
| Several games and apps fail | Check Xbox services, network and account access, console updates, and system state. |
| Only one game or app fails | Check that title’s service status, account entitlement, update, installation, and storage location. |
| Only online features fail | Focus on service status, network tests, router, NAT, and multiplayer connectivity. |
| Only titles on an external drive fail | Check the USB connection and drive, then test the title on internal storage. |
| The issue began after an update | Check for a service or software incident before removing local data. |
Repair a single affected game or app
Check account access and the title’s service
For a digital game, confirm you are signed in to the account that owns it or otherwise has access. Check that any required subscription or entitlement is active and, where relevant, that the console is set as the account’s Home Xbox. Do not buy or redeem the title again simply because this error appears. The code alone does not establish that licensing is the cause.
Check storage and external drives
If the title is on a USB drive, fully shut down the Xbox, disconnect and reconnect the drive, and test another game from it. A loose connection, a drive that disconnects, insufficient free space, or an incomplete installation can prevent a title from opening. If possible, move or reinstall the affected title on internal storage to see whether the drive is involved.

Reinstall only after simpler checks
If other titles work but one game still fails—especially after an interrupted update—an incomplete or damaged installation is one possibility. Before uninstalling, check available storage, confirm you can access the title through the correct account, make sure cloud synchronization has completed, and note custom settings that may not be cloud-backed. Reinstalling can require a large download and is unlikely to fix a console-wide or service problem.

Warning: This removes saved games stored locally on the console. A save that has not synchronized may be lost; do not use this step if the Xbox has been offline or you are unsure whether your latest progress reached the cloud. Make sure you know the Microsoft account credentials used on the console.
- Connect the Xbox to the internet and allow games time to synchronize.
- Open Settings > System > Storage devices.
- Select Clear local saved games and confirm.
- After the console restarts, sign in, stay online, and launch the game so synchronized saves can download.
This is not a generic, harmless cache clear: it removes local save copies. Synchronized cloud saves are expected to resynchronize, but unsynced progress is not protected. Community users have reported this step in persistent game-launch troubleshooting, but those reports are anecdotal: Microsoft Community discussion and an Xbox Support discussion.

Reset the console while keeping games and apps
If multiple titles or apps still fail after service, restart, network, and update checks, the less destructive reset option is Reset and keep my games & apps. It refreshes or reinstalls the console operating system while keeping installed games and apps, but removes accounts, saved settings, and local configuration. You will need to sign in again and reconnect to Xbox services.
- Open Settings > System > Console info.
- Select Reset console.
- Choose Reset and keep my games & apps.
Community troubleshooting guidance also favors this option before a full wipe for persistent software problems: Microsoft Community and additional Xbox Series X guidance.
When to stop and contact Xbox Support
Do not choose Reset and remove everything just because the earlier steps failed. A full reset removes accounts, settings, installed games and apps, and local saved data; anything that has not synchronized may be permanently lost.
If the keep-games reset fails, note the exact screen and any secondary error code, and contact Xbox Support about 0x87e11838. Use the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter when the console cannot boot normally. Repeated shutdowns, storage failures, overheating, or failures across all titles may warrant support assessment; this error code alone does not prove a hardware fault.
