Windows 11 already includes DirectX 12; most players do not need to download DirectX separately. To solve a game problem or improve play, check the GPU and driver, choose the right graphics settings, and confirm that the game and display support the feature you want. A higher DirectX number alone does not mean higher frame rates.

What DirectX does—and what its version number means

DirectX is a family of Windows technologies that helps games communicate with graphics, audio, and other hardware. Direct3D is the graphics API most relevant to games; the runtime is the set of system components software uses; and DXGI handles graphics adapters, displays, and presentation.

Other labels describe different parts of the system, not a performance score. A Direct3D feature level identifies graphics functions a GPU exposes, while Shader Model describes shader-programming capabilities. WDDM is the Windows display-driver model. Microsoft cautions that feature levels are distinct from API versions and do not measure speed: actual performance depends on the hardware and its implementation (Microsoft’s feature-level documentation).

Windows 11’s minimum graphics requirement is a DirectX 12-compatible graphics card and a WDDM 2.0 driver. That baseline does not mean every PC supports every DirectX 12 feature or meets a particular game’s requirements (Microsoft Windows 11 specifications).

DirectX 11 versus DirectX 12: which should you use?

Choose the renderer the game recommends, then test the alternative if you have a specific problem. Neither API is universally faster. DirectX 12 gives game engines more direct control over GPU work and can reduce CPU overhead, but it also places more responsibility on the game’s implementation. A game can therefore run smoothly in DX11 and poorly in DX12, or the reverse.

Mode Potential advantages When to consider it
DirectX 11 Mature compatibility; can be a useful fallback for older hardware or a problematic DX12 implementation. Try it if the game crashes, stutters, or has poor frame pacing only in DX12.
DirectX 12 Can reduce CPU overhead and enables some modern rendering features when the game and hardware support them. Use it when the game recommends it or requires it for a feature such as ray tracing.

For a fair comparison, use the same scene, resolution, settings, and frame-rate cap, and allow for any first-run shader compilation. Keep the mode that behaves better in that game. A GPU that supports DirectX 12 may still lack a specific feature, feature level, or driver capability the title requires.

Check DirectX, your GPU, and your driver

  1. Press Windows key + R, type dxdiag, and press Enter. You can also search for “dxdiag” from Start.
  2. If Windows asks whether to verify digitally signed drivers, accept the prompt.
  3. On the System tab, read DirectX Version.
  4. Open Display or Render to inspect the adapter name, driver version and date, driver model, feature information, and any diagnostic notes. Systems with more than one GPU may show multiple tabs.

The version shown by dxdiag is not a complete inventory of your GPU’s capabilities. Check the game’s minimum requirements if it names a feature level, Shader Model, or ray-tracing requirement. Use winver to see the Windows version and build; use Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) to inspect Display adapters. Microsoft’s DirectX support guide also documents the dxdiag check.

Update DirectX and graphics drivers safely

Modern Windows DirectX components are maintained through Windows Update; there is no separate DirectX 12 installer you need for Windows 11. Avoid third-party “DirectX booster” tools, registry cleaners, and DLL download sites. They cannot make unsupported hardware support a feature, and manually replacing system DLLs can create new problems.

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install relevant available updates and restart.
  2. Update the graphics driver. On a laptop or prebuilt PC, check the manufacturer’s support page first, especially if the laptop uses hybrid graphics or a customized display driver. For a desktop card, use the GPU maker’s official support page: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Microsoft also explains its driver guidance at DirectX 12 for Windows Subsystems.
  3. Restart and run dxdiag again if needed. If a problem began immediately after a driver update, consider rolling back that driver rather than assuming the newest release is always best.

A generic driver can cause brightness, sleep, hybrid-GPU switching, or external-display problems on some laptops. Prefer the laptop maker’s driver when those platform-specific functions stop working.

When an older game reports a missing DLL

Messages naming files such as d3dx9_*.dll or xinput1_3.dll can point to a missing legacy side-by-side component, not an absent DirectX 12 upgrade. First repair or reinstall the affected game through its publisher or launcher. If the game explicitly needs the older component, use the publisher’s installer or Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer. Legacy runtime components do not downgrade Windows 11’s DirectX 12 components. Never fetch an individual DLL from an unofficial site.

Set Windows 11 graphics options for the game you play

Choose the GPU per game

On a hybrid laptop, Windows may run a game on the integrated GPU to save power. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select or add the game, choose Options, and pick High performance, Power saving, or Let Windows decide. Assign the game executable itself, not only its launcher. The high-performance choice typically selects the discrete GPU when one is available; power mode, battery operation, manufacturer utilities, and which GPU an external display is connected to can also matter. Microsoft documents this graphics settings area in its windowed-game optimizations guide.

Try optimizations for windowed games when presentation is the problem

Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Default settings and find Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft describes this option for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless. It can move games to a modern flip presentation model, reduce frame latency, and enable features such as Auto HDR and VRR on supported setups. Restart the game after changing it. If you see flicker, crashes, poor frame pacing, or overlay conflicts, try turning it off for diagnosis. Auto HDR may enable the optimization automatically; in some cases, turn off Auto HDR first to change the windowed-game setting.

Treat Game Mode and GPU scheduling as tests, not FPS promises

Game Mode manages aspects of Windows scheduling and background activity; it does not upgrade DirectX. Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling is another configuration option whose results vary with the GPU, driver, workload, and game. If you test either setting, compare frame-time consistency and stability in the same game rather than assuming a frame-rate gain.

HDR, Auto HDR, refresh rate, and VRR

HDR and Auto HDR

HDR requires compatible graphics hardware and driver, a suitable display and connection, and a game or Windows feature that uses HDR. Open Settings > System > Display > HDR to see available settings. Microsoft recommends current graphics drivers and notes that display quality varies; its HDR settings guide covers setup and troubleshooting. A display accepting an HDR signal is not necessarily capable of convincing HDR image quality.

Auto HDR can apply an HDR presentation to some compatible SDR games; it is not the same as a game’s native HDR mode, and it cannot turn an SDR panel into a true HDR display. Try it if you prefer the result, then compare with it off. Washed-out colors, excessive brightness, crushed or raised blacks, or an overly dark game are reasons to check the monitor’s picture mode and Windows HDR calibration, or disable Auto HDR. If the HDR control is missing or colors look wrong, check the monitor’s HDR setting, cable and output mode, refresh rate, resolution, and driver. Microsoft’s Advanced Color documentation describes the Windows graphics context.

Refresh rate, VRR, and DRR

Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display to view or select a refresh rate supported by the display and graphics output. Refresh rate is how often the display can update; variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a compatible display synchronize refresh timing with frame delivery, helping reduce tearing and uneven pacing. Windows Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR), on supported mobile hardware, is intended to balance responsiveness and battery life. VRR requires a compatible display, driver, output path, and suitable game or presentation mode. A 144 Hz screen cannot make a game render 144 frames per second if the system cannot produce them. See Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions.

What DirectX 12 Ultimate adds

DirectX 12 Ultimate is a feature target, not a separate application to download. It encompasses DirectX Raytracing, variable-rate shading, mesh shaders, and sampler feedback. A compatible game, graphics chip, driver, and Windows environment are needed to use the relevant features; a card that supports DirectX 12 does not necessarily support all of them. Microsoft describes the limits in its Windows 11 specifications. The label does not guarantee a particular frame rate or image quality: ray tracing, for example, can increase rendering cost, and results depend on implementation and settings.

DirectStorage: faster loading only in supported games

DirectStorage is a game technology intended to improve asset-loading paths, including by making more effective use of fast storage and GPU decompression. Microsoft lists an NVMe SSD, a DirectX 12 GPU, and Shader Model 6.0 support among its requirements; the game must also implement DirectStorage (Microsoft Windows 11 specifications). Having an NVMe drive alone does not enable the feature in every title. Loading improvements depend on the game engine, assets, CPU, GPU, and storage path, and an SSD upgrade by itself is not a general FPS upgrade.

Automatic Super Resolution is a separate, limited Windows feature

Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) is not a DirectX runtime update. Microsoft documents it for certain Copilot+ PCs and the ROG Xbox Ally X, on Windows 11 version 24H2 or later with current drivers and compatible hardware. The documented feature supports DirectX 10 or later games, not DirectX 9, Vulkan, or OpenGL titles. Availability is therefore not universal. To check for it, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select or add the game executable, and inspect the available options. See Microsoft’s Auto SR requirements and instructions.

Troubleshoot DirectX errors by symptom

A “DirectX error” can come from the game, driver, hardware instability, or a missing legacy component. Start with the exact error and the scope: one failing title points first toward that game or its renderer; several unrelated games failing at once makes a shared driver, GPU selection, or system-stability issue more plausible.

Symptom Likely area to investigate First useful action
“DirectX 12 is not supported” GPU capability, feature level, driver, or game requirement mismatch Compare the game’s stated requirements with the GPU and driver information in dxdiag; update the correct driver if needed.
Missing d3dx9_*.dll or similar Legacy game component Repair the game, then use its official installer or Microsoft’s legacy runtime if required.
DXGI device removed or device hung Driver timeout, unstable overclock, heat, VRAM pressure, or game bug Update or roll back the driver if the timing fits; remove overclocks, lower graphics settings, and check temperatures.
DX12 crashes but DX11 works Game-specific DX12 implementation or driver issue Use DX11 temporarily and check for a game update or driver fix.
HDR unavailable or washed out Display setting, cable/output mode, driver, or monitor tone mapping Check the monitor’s HDR mode, Windows HDR settings, driver, and supported output modes; calibrate or disable Auto HDR if the image is poor.
Borderless game has high latency or flicker Presentation mode, windowed optimization, or overlay conflict Test windowed-game optimizations, fullscreen mode, and the game with overlays disabled.
Stutter began after a game or driver update Shader compilation, patch, driver cache, or background activity Allow shader compilation to finish, restart, check the game’s support notes, and compare with a frame-rate cap or known-good driver.
Low FPS on a laptop Integrated GPU selection, battery/power limit, or game settings Assign the game to High performance in Graphics settings and test while plugged in.

A safe order for diagnosing a crash

  1. Write down the exact error, game, and whether other games are affected. Run dxdiag; use its option to save a report if you need to share system details with the game publisher.
  2. Install pending Windows updates, then update the GPU driver from the appropriate PC or GPU manufacturer. If the problem began directly after a driver update, test rollback instead.
  3. Verify or repair the game files in its launcher. Temporarily disable overlays such as Xbox Game Bar, Discord, Steam, or GPU recording and monitoring tools.
  4. If the game offers both renderers, test DX11 and DX12 separately. Temporarily disable ray tracing, frame generation, HDR, and overclocks to isolate the cause; restore options one at a time.
  5. Reset the game’s graphics configuration or consult its support page if one title remains affected. Install a legacy runtime only when the error calls for it.
  6. If multiple games fail, check GPU selection, temperatures, power limits, and general system stability. Do not replace Windows system DLLs manually.

When a hardware upgrade is the real answer

Consider hardware only after identifying the bottleneck. A GPU upgrade may be appropriate when the card lacks a game’s required feature level or ray-tracing capability, or when limited VRAM is causing texture or streaming problems. A CPU may limit frame rates in CPU-heavy games, particularly at settings where the GPU has headroom. An NVMe drive is relevant to supported loading features, while an HDR/VRR monitor matters only if the display is the missing part of the experience.

On laptops, also account for hybrid graphics, power mode, and external-display wiring; those can limit performance without any DirectX change. Do not buy a new GPU just because dxdiag reports DirectX 12: that number is not a benchmark or a verdict on game performance.

Quick checklist before changing more settings

  • Check DirectX, adapter, and driver details in dxdiag.
  • Install Windows updates and the appropriate manufacturer GPU driver.
  • Assign the game executable to the intended GPU, especially on a laptop.
  • Set a supported display refresh rate and enable VRR only if the display and output path support it.
  • Evaluate HDR and Auto HDR separately, and keep the result that looks right.
  • Use the game’s recommended renderer; compare DX11 and DX12 only when it offers both or you are troubleshooting.
  • Install legacy components only from the game publisher or Microsoft, and benchmark changes one at a time.
