You can make a weak laptop a better gaming device, but you cannot tune an integrated GPU into a high-end gaming graphics card. The useful upgrade may be as simple as choosing the right Windows settings, adding compatible RAM, or replacing a hard drive. If the laptop cannot run a game locally, cloud or remote play can make it a capable gaming client instead.

Start by identifying the bottleneck, then test changes one at a time. That keeps expectations realistic—and helps you avoid spending money on an upgrade that cannot solve your particular problem.

First, find out what is limiting the laptop

“Potato laptop” can mean several different things: too little memory, a slow hard drive, overheating, a misconfigured graphics setting, or graphics hardware that simply cannot render a demanding game. The remedy depends on which one you have. Integrated graphics use system memory and are generally weaker for demanding games than a discrete GPU, which is designed for graphics workloads. Microsoft explains the difference between integrated and discrete GPUs.

Find the key specifications

  • CPU: Note the processor model and generation.
  • Memory: Record installed RAM and check whether it is upgradeable.
  • Graphics: Note the GPU name; some laptops have both integrated and discrete graphics.
  • Storage: Check whether the drive is a hard disk or SSD, and how much free space remains.
  • Display: Note resolution and refresh rate.
  • Power and cooling: Check whether performance changes on battery, whether the laptop overheats, and whether it becomes unusually loud or unstable.

Open Settings → System → About for basic device information. Open Task Manager → Performance for CPU, memory, disk, and GPU activity. For more detail, press Win + R, enter dxdiag, and press Enter; msinfo32 opens System Information. These tools identify hardware; they do not measure gaming performance.

Record a repeatable baseline

  1. Choose a representative game or its built-in benchmark.
  2. Record the resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate cap, and whether the game is using integrated or discrete graphics.
  3. Play the same scene for about five minutes. Note average FPS, visible stutter, and—if available from a reputable monitoring utility—temperatures and clock speeds.
  4. Change one setting at a time and repeat the same test. If the game is smooth at first but slows after 10–15 minutes, watch for heat-related clock-speed drops.

Average FPS does not tell the whole story: 1% lows describe frequent dips, while frame pacing describes whether frames arrive consistently. Input latency matters especially in competitive games. There is no dependable universal percentage improvement for these changes; results vary with the laptop, game, drivers, memory configuration, and cooling.

Try these free, reversible Windows changes

1. Plug in the correct charger

Use the laptop’s original charger or one with the wattage specified by its manufacturer. Some laptops limit performance on battery, and an underpowered or failing charger can also cause throttling. Plugging in is not a guarantee of better performance, but it is the right baseline for testing demanding games.

2. Choose a suitable power mode

On Windows 11, open Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode and choose Best performance if it is available. Labels and options can vary by Windows edition, plugged-in state, and manufacturer utility. The mode can increase heat, fan noise, and power use. If performance gets worse, the laptop may be hitting thermal or power limits; switch back to Balanced and check cooling and charger behavior.

3. Turn on Game Mode

Open Settings → Gaming → Game Mode and turn it on. Game Mode can help manage scheduling and background activity, but it is not a GPU upgrade and does not guarantee higher FPS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Select the high-performance GPU, if the laptop has one

In Windows 11, go to Settings → System → Display → Graphics. Add the game if needed, select it, choose Options, set High performance, then select Save. Restart the game. When Windows sees more than one graphics processor, its choices can include Let Windows decide, Power saving, and High performance. Microsoft documents the graphics preference and windowed-game settings.

  • A laptop with only one integrated GPU will not gain a second GPU from this setting.
  • If the game starts through a launcher, add the actual game executable as well as, or instead of, the launcher.
  • Some manufacturers manage switchable graphics in their own utility or firmware. If High performance is missing, the laptop may have one GPU or an incomplete graphics-driver installation.

5. Test Optimizations for windowed games

In Windows 11, go to Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Default settings, then turn on Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft says the feature targets compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. It may reduce presentation latency and enable features such as Auto HDR or variable refresh rate when the display supports them. Restart the game after changing the setting. Test it both on and off if a game stutters or has unusual frame pacing; it is not a universal performance fix.

6. Update drivers from reliable sources

  1. Install available updates through Windows Update.
  2. For a business laptop or one with switchable graphics, check the laptop maker’s support page for validated chipset and graphics drivers.
  3. For a discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU, compare the laptop maker’s driver with the GPU maker’s current driver; use the laptop maker’s version if its guidance requires it.
  4. Restart and retest the same game scene.

Avoid automatic driver-booster utilities, registry cleaners, and random modified drivers. If an update causes trouble, use the laptop maker’s documented rollback or reinstall procedure rather than stacking more tweak tools on top.

7. Reduce competing background work

Before launching the game, close browsers with many tabs, pause cloud synchronization, stop large downloads, and exit video editing, virtualization, or development tools you are not using. Check Task Manager for unexpected CPU, disk, or memory use. Disable overlays one at a time so you can identify whether a change helps. Avoid indiscriminately disabling Windows services; keep changes reversible.

Set game graphics for the hardware you have

Lower settings in this order when performance is poor. The exact result depends on the game and its graphics engine.

  1. Resolution and render scale: Lowering either reduces the pixels the GPU must render, often at the cost of sharpness. Try 1280×720 or 1600×900, or a render scale around 70–90%, as a starting point.
  2. Ray tracing: Turn it off on weak hardware; it can be especially demanding.
  3. Shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, and ambient occlusion: Set these low or off before sacrificing every other visual setting.
  4. View distance, crowd density, and foliage: Reduce these if the game remains slow, particularly when CPU use is high.
  5. Textures: Try Low or Medium if the GPU has limited video memory. Texture quality may have less effect on speed when memory is sufficient, but can cause stutter if the GPU runs short of it.
  6. Frame-rate limit: Try 30, 40, or 60 fps depending on what the laptop can sustain steadily. A stable cap can feel better than an uncapped frame rate that swings widely.

Fullscreen and borderless-windowed modes can behave differently; test both. If the game offers an upscaler, try its built-in option, but support and results depend on the GPU and rendering API. Lower resolution or render scale can make the image blurry. Compare average FPS with 1% lows and frame pacing, not just the highest number shown by an overlay.

Choose games that fit the laptop—or stream the demanding ones

  • Usually suitable for weak hardware: older PC games, 2D and indie titles, turn-based strategy, lightweight multiplayer, and older esports games.
  • May work with careful settings: older 3D games, less demanding competitive games, and titles with a strong low preset or resolution scaling. Some may be acceptable at a stable 30 fps.
  • Often better streamed or played elsewhere: current AAA releases, ray-traced games, VR, and games whose minimum CPU, GPU, or feature requirements exceed the laptop’s hardware.

Check each game’s own system requirements before installing or buying it; general laptop specifications do not guarantee compatibility. Microsoft’s laptop buying guidance also notes that game requirements vary.

Consider upgrades that address a real bottleneck

RAM: useful when memory is the constraint

More RAM can reduce paging-related stalls and improve multitasking when a laptop is short on memory. It can also help integrated graphics in some configurations, particularly when compatible memory enables dual-channel operation. It will not make a weak CPU or GPU powerful, and extra RAM may do little if memory was not the bottleneck.

Check the exact laptop model before buying: thin systems often have soldered RAM, and supported capacity, DDR generation, module type, and slot layout vary. Mixed modules may run at the slower module’s settings. Microsoft’s current gaming-oriented buying guidance places memory broadly around 16–64 GB while noting that requirements vary; that is buying guidance, not a requirement to install 16 GB in every older laptop. See Microsoft’s guidance.

SSD: a responsiveness upgrade, not usually an FPS upgrade

If the laptop still has a mechanical hard drive, an SSD can make Windows boot, applications open, and games load faster. It may reduce hitching caused by storage access, but it usually does not produce a major increase in average rendering FPS.

Before ordering a drive, verify whether the laptop takes a 2.5-inch SATA drive, M.2 SATA, or M.2 NVMe; check the supported physical length (such as 2230, 2242, or 2280), whether a second drive is supported, and whether the drive is user-replaceable. Plan for a recovery image or Windows installation if cloning is not practical.

Cooling and maintenance: improve sustained performance safely

  • Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface and keep intake and exhaust vents clear.
  • Clean dust carefully, following model-specific instructions. A cooling pad is useful only if it does not block the laptop’s intake.
  • Compare clock speeds and FPS at launch with results after 10–15 minutes to spot possible throttling. Safe temperature limits differ by processor, GPU, chassis, and manufacturer; use the maker’s guidance rather than a universal threshold.
  • Stop using the laptop if its battery is swollen or the chassis is bulging. Do not open a swollen-battery device unless qualified to handle it.

A laptop that starts fast and slows after warming up may be throttling. Cleaning may help if dust or blocked airflow is the cause, but it cannot fix hardware that is too weak for the game. Avoid aggressive overclocking or undocumented voltage and firmware changes; they add stability, heat, and warranty risks.

Why an eGPU is rarely the cheap answer

An external GPU usually requires a compatible high-bandwidth port—often Thunderbolt or USB4 with PCIe tunneling—plus an enclosure or adapter, desktop graphics card, and adequate power. Ordinary USB-C does not automatically support an eGPU. Cost, bandwidth loss, compatibility, enclosure bulk, and an old CPU bottleneck can make the result poor value. Verify the exact laptop model and port specification before considering this route.

Use cloud gaming when local graphics are the hard limit

Cloud gaming runs a supported game on a remote server and sends the video to the laptop. It can turn weak hardware into a useful gaming endpoint, but it does not upgrade the laptop’s local GPU. Network latency, Wi-Fi congestion, game availability, and the laptop’s ability to decode the stream all matter.

NVIDIA GeForce NOW

GeForce NOW is a good candidate when the laptop cannot render a supported game locally and you have reliable internet and compatible game access. NVIDIA’s stated minimum Windows configuration is 64-bit Windows 10 or later, a dual-core 2.0 GHz-or-faster CPU, 4 GB RAM, and DirectX 11-capable graphics. Its stated network recommendations include at least 15 Mbps for 720p/60 fps and 25 Mbps for 1080p/60 fps, with latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center; NVIDIA recommends Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These are service requirements and recommendations, not a guarantee of a smooth session in every home. Check NVIDIA’s current GeForce NOW requirements.

  1. Test the network first; use Ethernet if possible, or 5 GHz Wi-Fi near the router.
  2. Install the official app or use a supported browser path, then sign in.
  3. Connect the relevant game-store accounts and search for a supported title.
  4. Launch the game. If the image stutters, try a lower streaming resolution and check for network congestion and latency.

Not every PC game or storefront title is supported, and having access to a stream does not necessarily mean the game is included: ownership, subscription, session, queue, and regional conditions can apply. NVIDIA publishes account and app setup details in its GeForce NOW setup guide.

Xbox Cloud Gaming

Xbox Cloud Gaming streams supported titles rather than installing and running the PC version on the laptop. Microsoft says select free-to-play games can be streamed with a free Microsoft account in supported regions; other games depend on the relevant Game Pass plan and current availability. Check the live Xbox Cloud Gaming page for supported devices, games, regions, and plan details. A controller is often more comfortable for cloud play, while latency can make competitive mouse-and-keyboard play feel less responsive.

Cloud catalogues and plans change, and a title available through Xbox Cloud Gaming may not be available as a native PC install, or vice versa. If a cloud game will not launch, check that the title is cloud-enabled, your plan and region support it, your Microsoft account is in good standing, and the title is still in the catalogue.

Local-network streaming is usually simpler than playing remotely over the internet. Remote use also depends on the host network’s upload capacity, both devices’ connection quality, and latency. This route is useful when the laptop is weak at rendering but can handle video playback; it does not make the host’s hardware available when that machine is off.

Troubleshoot the result before spending more

The game still uses the wrong GPU

  1. Add the game’s actual executable, not only its launcher, under Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
  2. Save the preference and restart the game.
  3. Check the laptop maker’s graphics utility and confirm the discrete GPU appears in Device Manager.
  4. If the GPU is missing or selection is still wrong, reinstall or roll back the graphics driver using the laptop maker’s instructions.

Performance drops after changing power settings

Return to Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode → Balanced. Then check the charger’s rating, temperatures, vents, and fan behavior. A more aggressive power profile can expose thermal throttling rather than improve sustained performance.

More RAM did not improve FPS

The game may be limited by GPU, CPU, heat, or power rather than memory; it may not have been memory-constrained; or the laptop may not be using the expected channel configuration. If Task Manager shows memory pressure is not the issue, another RAM purchase is unlikely to solve poor rendering performance.

A cloud stream is blurry or stutters

  • Try Ethernet or move to a less congested 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection.
  • Pause other downloads and video streams.
  • Check latency and stability, not download speed alone.
  • Lower the streaming resolution or bitrate, then see whether playback improves.
  • Consider whether the laptop is decoding the stream smoothly.

Microsoft notes that using the Xbox PC app may require switching out of Windows S mode. Switching out is generally a one-way decision, so read the implications and verify that it is necessary before proceeding. See Microsoft’s Xbox on PC information.

Know when to stop upgrading

An SSD or a compatible RAM kit can be sensible when it addresses a clear bottleneck. Compare total cost against a used gaming desktop or entry-level gaming laptop if the machine also needs cooling work, an eGPU, or multiple upgrades. A refurbished desktop with a replaceable graphics card may offer a better upgrade path than attaching an expensive eGPU to an old laptop.

  • Consider replacement if the CPU is below a game’s minimum requirements or the GPU lacks required feature support.
  • Stop investing if insufficient RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded, or if overheating persists after safe cleaning and service.
  • Do not continue using a laptop with a swollen battery.
  • If you need modern AAA games to run locally, cloud play or a more capable machine is more realistic than software tweaks.

Quick checklist

  • Identify the CPU, RAM, graphics processor, storage, and display.
  • Record a repeatable FPS and stutter baseline.
  • Use the correct charger and choose a suitable power mode.
  • Turn on Game Mode and select High performance graphics where a second GPU exists.
  • Test Windowed Game Optimizations for compatible games.
  • Close competing apps and downloads; update drivers from reliable sources.
  • Lower resolution, render scale, shadows, reflections, and ray tracing before making other changes.
  • Check RAM and SSD compatibility before buying parts.
  • Check cooling and sustained performance over a longer session.
  • If local hardware is insufficient, compare cloud gaming, remote play, and replacement.
