Breeding compatibility, egg collection, offspring exceptions, and inheritance rules vary by game, so a reliable tool should identify its supported game and explain each result rather than present one rule set as universal.
Choose the game before designing the rules
Decide which game or games the first release supports, and make that choice visible in the interface. For example, the official Sword and Shield guide covers Nursery breeding, while Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl guidance describes that game’s Nursery. Scarlet and Violet use picnics instead, changing how players encounter and collect eggs; a 2022 Nintendo Life guide documents that workflow.
Keep each game’s rules in its own module or configuration. Do not let a rule documented for one generation silently determine results for another. Label the supported game, the rule-set version, and when the calculator’s data was last updated.
Build compatibility checking first
The minimum useful input is two parent species, their genders where relevant, and the selected game. The result should state whether the pairing can produce an Egg, show any shared egg groups, and explain the reason in plain language.

Apply special rules before treating groups as decisive
Egg groups are an important compatibility check, but they are not the whole rule system. Ditto is a special partner, not an ordinary egg group. The official BDSP guide says Pokémon with an unknown gender can only breed with Ditto. Other exceptions also exist, so represent exclusions and special pairings explicitly rather than relying only on matching group labels.
Prefer a result such as “Compatible: shared egg group” or “Not compatible: this pairing is excluded in this game” over a bare green check or red cross. That explanation helps players understand what the calculator checked and makes mistakes easier to spot.
Keep the first interface focused
A simple first screen can offer a game selector, Parent A and Parent B selectors, gender fields when applicable, and a result panel. Show the shared egg groups and compatibility explanation beside the result. An existing fan-made breeding checker illustrates this compact pattern and separates related tools such as IV prediction, egg-move chains, and shiny odds; treat it as a design example, not as an authority for every mechanic.
Determine the offspring species and exceptions
Use the female parent—or the non-Ditto parent—as the ordinary offspring-species base case, then apply the selected game’s exceptions. The Pokémon Company International’s BDSP Trainers Guide states: “The Pokémon found inside an Egg will always be the same species as the female Pokémon (or the non-Ditto Pokémon) and will often inherit its Ability.” Keep that statement in its BDSP context rather than treating every detail as identical across games.

BDSP’s official guide lists nine incense-dependent baby outcomes; for example, Snorlax holding Full Incense produces Munchlax. Model these as explicit game-specific rules, not as a generic family-tree lookup. Broader mechanics references also document exceptional pairings and variable offspring, including Manaphy and Phione.

Separate species data from game rules
Store relatively stable species facts separately from rules that vary by game. A practical species record can include:
- Species identity and evolutionary family.
- Egg groups and gender availability or ratio.
- Breedability, exclusions, and special pairing behavior.
- Game availability and item-dependent offspring.
Keep inheritance behavior in game-keyed rules, with source and version metadata so exceptions can be reviewed without rewriting species records. This separation makes it easier to add another game while reducing the risk that a newer game’s rule leaks into an older game’s result.
PokéAPI’s REST documentation describes an API that can be evaluated for species-reference data. Its existence, and its credit in the fan checker, do not establish complete breeding-rule coverage or a complete roster for every game. Validate the chosen game’s species and exceptions against game-specific references before describing the dataset as complete.
Calculate inheritance only when the game’s rules are implemented
Keep nature, IVs, ability, and move inheritance as separate outputs. Each can have different conditions and generation-specific rules; do not silently apply one game’s behavior to another or show odds unsupported by the selected rule set and inputs.
For Sword and Shield, the official guide describes Everstone-based nature inheritance and Destiny Knot passing five individual strengths. Other generations have different ability and move rules. Add each calculation only after its game-specific behavior is represented and validated, and make any required held items or parent details part of the input.

Use a transparent calculation sequence
- Normalize the selected game, parent species, genders, and held items.
- Check game-specific exclusions and special pairing rules, including Ditto.
- Compare egg groups when the selected game’s rules require that check.
- Determine the likely offspring species using that game’s base rule.
- Apply item and evolutionary-line exceptions.
- Calculate only the inherited properties implemented for that game.
- Return the result with its explanation, supported-game scope, and data update date.
Test edge cases before expanding coverage
Create example-based checks for rule boundaries, not only ordinary pairings. Include:
- Two opposite-gender Pokémon that share an egg group.
- Ditto paired with a breedable Pokémon whose gender is nonstandard.
- An unknown-gender pairing without Ditto.
- A species excluded from breeding.
- A pairing with an item-dependent baby outcome.
- At least one inheritance case for every supported game.
These are test cases to implement, not claims that a particular calculator has already passed them. When a result cannot be determined from the selected game’s modeled rules, say so instead of guessing.
Expand features in deliberate stages
A sound first release can support one named game and answer compatibility plus offspring species. Egg-group browsing is a natural next feature. IV, nature, ability, move inheritance, breeding-chain planning, and odds are distinct additions: give each its own inputs and game-specific logic rather than making a broad “all games” claim before those rules are covered.
When comparing existing calculators, assess supported games, explanations, exception handling, offspring accuracy, inheritance features, update transparency, and how easily players can enter both parents. A compatibility checker may be useful without also being a complete inheritance or chain-planning tool.
