There is no single confirmed fix for every Helldivers 2 crash on PC. Start with the failure pattern, check for a game update or known issue, then work through reversible fixes—verify the Steam files, reset local settings, test GameGuard and background software, and investigate drivers or hardware only as the symptoms warrant.
Identify where Helldivers 2 fails
- Steam says “Preparing to Launch,” then nothing happens: Start with pending updates, file verification, GameGuard initialization, security blocks, overlays, and system requirements.
- The game opens but crashes before the menu: Reset the local settings folder, test without overlays or launch options, and check GameGuard. If the problem began after a driver change, test the current driver or roll back through the GPU maker’s official channel.
- It reaches the menu or ship but crashes in a mission: Test lower graphics settings, a cache/settings reset, and a clean background-app setup. Note whether it happens in one mission, during demanding effects, or after alt-tabbing.
- It freezes briefly and recovers: A stall can involve shader/cache work, resource pressure, a driver timeout, background software, network conditions, or a game-specific issue. Record when it happens before changing settings.
- Windows itself locks up or reboots: Treat this as a system stability problem, not an ordinary game crash. Check temperatures, stock hardware settings, RAM, power, storage, and Windows error reports.
Check updates, known issues, and requirements first
Restart Windows and Steam, then make sure Steam has finished any pending Helldivers 2 download. If the failure began immediately after a game, Windows, or GPU-driver update, note that timing. Arrowhead’s known-issues list was updated July 27, 2026, and says it is not exhaustive; a widespread post-patch fault may need a developer fix rather than local changes.
Steam’s published PC requirements list the following hardware. They are reference points, not a promise of stable performance on every system; the listing may not capture every later patch or driver issue. Check your actual GPU, RAM, CPU, Windows version, and free disk space. The published minimum and recommended storage figures differ substantially, and should not be treated as evidence that one is a typo.

Verify the Steam installation
Steam’s standard launch troubleshooting recommends checking system requirements, updating Windows and drivers, disabling non-essential software, and verifying game files.
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click HELLDIVERS 2 and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for verification to finish, restart Steam, and test the game.
Verification can replace damaged installation files, but it does not reset a bad local settings file or resolve every GameGuard, driver, security, hardware, or patch-level problem. See Steam’s launch troubleshooting guidance.
Reset local settings without deleting the backup
Community troubleshooting references identify %APPDATA%ArrowheadHelldivers2 as a local configuration folder that can be involved in launch or settings problems. Renaming it is safer than deleting it: the game can create a fresh folder, while the original remains available to restore.

- Close Helldivers 2 and Steam.
- Press Windows + R, enter
%APPDATA%Arrowhead, and press Enter. - Rename the
Helldivers2folder toHelldivers2.backup. - Launch the game. If it starts, set up graphics and controls again and keep the backup until the fix is confirmed.
The reset can remove local preferences such as graphics settings and keybinds, as well as potentially useful diagnostic files. Do not assume it removes account progress; the folder contents do not establish that. This is a community-reported troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed official fix. Repair GameGuard carefully
If the error specifically points to GameGuard or the game appears to fail while anti-cheat initializes, a repair or reinstall may help. Community troubleshooting describes this approach, but it is not a universal fix.
- Close the game and Steam.
- In Steam, open Library, right-click Helldivers 2, choose Manage, then Browse local files.
- Look in the game directory for GameGuard-related files or an installer with an available repair, uninstall, or reinstall option.
- Use the available option, reopen Steam, and test the game. If you removed files manually, run Steam file verification afterward to restore required files.
Do not permanently disable antivirus, firewall, Windows security, or kernel protections. If a security product may be blocking a component, check its protection history and make only a temporary, controlled test or a narrow exclusion for the relevant game component. Restore protection promptly and remove an exclusion that makes no difference. Steam’s Helldivers 2 technical support page routes technical issues to Arrowhead.

Isolate overlays, utilities, and controller input
Test background software as a controlled experiment, not by disabling everything at once. Overlays, capture tools, VPNs, security features, and other utilities appear in community reports, but that does not prove any one program is incompatible on every PC.
- Turn off the Steam Overlay for Helldivers 2 and test.
- If there is no change, restore it and test Discord Overlay, GPU overlays, or Xbox Game Bar one at a time.
- Separately test without recording or streaming software, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner overlays, RGB or hardware-monitoring tools, VPN software, mods, reshade or DLL injectors, and macro tools.
- Record each result and restore anything that does not affect the crash.
For a launch-crash test involving controller handling, right-click the game in Steam, open Properties → Controller, and set the per-game option to Disable Steam Input. Test once, then restore the previous setting if it does not help or disrupts your controller. This is a reversible community-reported workaround, not a confirmed general fix. Update or roll back the graphics driver
Use the GPU manufacturer’s driver channel, not a third-party driver-updater utility. First identify the exact GPU and note whether the crash began just after a driver update. Install the current stable driver, use the manufacturer’s clean-install option if offered, reboot, and test with default graphics settings. If the timing strongly implicates a recent update, a rollback through the official channel is a reasonable comparison; do not install a random older driver.

Reduce graphics load and test display options
For crashes or freezes during play, change one setting at a time and retest. Community reports mention lowering the graphics preset and disabling image scaling for some crashes; these reports are not an Arrowhead guarantee.
- Lower the preset to Medium or Low.
- Disable image scaling or experimental upscaling options temporarily.
- Test borderless windowed mode and temporarily turn off HDR.
- Reduce resolution or cap the frame rate.
- Restart the game after a substantial renderer or display-mode change.
If the crash occurs only in missions, note the scene, effects, and whether alt-tab preceded it. That pattern can help distinguish a repeatable gameplay fault from a general launch failure.

- In Steam Library, right-click Helldivers 2 and select Properties.
- Under General, enter
--use-d3d11in launch options. - Launch once or twice and compare stability and performance.
- Remove the option if the game is less stable, performs worse, or will not start.
Do not stack unrelated launch commands from multiple guides. The option appears in this community troubleshooting report.
Check Windows, security history, and available space
- Run Windows Update and reboot after updates; confirm Windows is 64-bit.
- Check that both the system drive and the drive holding the game have free space.
- Review Windows Security protection history for blocked game or GameGuard files.
- Steam recommends updating Windows and relevant runtime components, including .NET where applicable. Use official Microsoft channels for missing updates.
- Start Steam normally first. Running it as administrator is a targeted test, not a standard requirement.
- Never download individual DLL files from random sites or rely on registry cleaners, paid driver-updaters, or “game booster” tools to diagnose a crash.
These checks align with Steam’s launch guidance; avoid indiscriminately reinstalling runtimes or changing the registry.
Diagnose a full-PC freeze separately
A game-only crash leaves Windows usable; a driver timeout may briefly black out or reset the display; a full system lock stops input and may require a hard reset. File verification is not an adequate diagnosis for the last case, and a demanding game can expose an existing instability without proving that it damaged hardware.
- Return CPU, GPU, and RAM settings to stock, including overclocks, undervolts, and unstable XMP/EXPO profiles.
- Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures during play.
- Check Windows Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer for display-driver,
WHEA-Logger, kernel-power, or application errors. - Test another demanding game; if it also crashes, broaden the investigation beyond Helldivers 2.
- Check storage health and power-supply stability. Use Windows Memory Diagnostic or MemTest86 if RAM instability is suspected.
If a whole-system freeze repeats, or the PC also reboots, overheats, or fails in other games, seek hardware diagnosis rather than repeatedly reinstalling Helldivers 2.
Contact Arrowhead with useful evidence
Escalate if the ordered checks fail, a GameGuard error code persists, the game repeatedly crashes at the same point, or multiple players appear affected after a patch. Steam’s official Helldivers 2 technical support route identifies Arrowhead as the support provider and lists [email protected].
Include your Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage type, last game update date or version, exact symptom and when it occurs, any error code, whether other games fail, steps already tried, relevant crash logs or system reports, and whether overlays, mods, VPNs, and overclocking were disabled. This makes it easier to separate a game fault from a local driver, software, or hardware problem.
