Name the family, invite up to five other Steam accounts, and assign each invitee an Adult or Child role. A family can have six members total. Members use their own accounts to play eligible games, but simultaneous play of the same game generally requires one family-owned copy per player.
What Steam Families does
Steam Families is Valve’s current system for sharing eligible games and managing family membership and parental controls. It replaces the older Steam Family Sharing and Family View systems, so older instructions about authorizing individual computers or an entire library becoming unavailable when its owner plays may no longer apply. See Valve’s Steam Families announcement.
It is not a shared Steam login. Each person keeps their own account, profile, friends list, purchases, saves, and achievements. A game remains owned by the account that bought it; family membership grants access to eligible games without transferring ownership. Valve’s Steam Families FAQ describes the feature and its account-specific progress.
Check these things before joining or creating a family
- Use separate accounts. Each member should sign in with their own Steam account; do not share passwords.
- Keep the group to close family or household members. Steam Families is intended for close family members, not as a general-purpose group-sharing workaround.
- Check country and Store-region eligibility. Members generally need to be in the same country and have compatible Steam Store regions. This is a current eligibility rule, not a guarantee that every invitation will work; consult Valve’s FAQ if Steam blocks an invite.
- Become Steam friends first. Valve’s setup flow uses the organizer’s Steam friends when selecting invitees.
- Consider the cooldown before changing groups. Leaving or being removed can restrict joining or creating another family for a long period; the commonly documented cooldown is one year. Check the live FAQ’s wording for the account and slot rules that apply before making a change.
- Invite only people you trust. Steam warns that cheating in a shared game can affect the owner’s account or Family Sharing privileges.
Create a Steam Family
You can manage Steam Families from the Steam client, a mobile device, or a web browser. Labels can vary slightly by platform, client version, or language. In the desktop client, use this path:
#1 Best Overall
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Sign in to Steam and open the Store page.
- Select your account name or profile menu, then choose Account Details.
- Open Family Management.
- Select Create a Family and enter a family name.
- Choose Invite a Member, then search for or select a Steam friend.
- Assign the invitee an Adult or Child role and send the invitation.
- Ask the invitee to accept the invitation through Steam. Membership—and access to eligible family games—begins after acceptance.
The organizer can invite up to five additional people, for six members total including the organizer. An invitation does not transfer a game or give anyone access to the inviter’s Steam account.
Join someone else’s Steam Family
An organizer or Adult member must invite you; being Steam friends with a library owner is not enough to access their games. Accept the invitation in Steam, then open your Library to see eligible titles. If Steam will not let you accept, check whether you already belong to another family, whether the group has reached six members, whether the country or Store-region requirements are met, and whether a cooldown applies.
Choose Adult or Child carefully
Adult members
Adults can help manage the family, invite or manage members, configure restrictions, and oversee Child accounts and requests. Give this role only to someone you trust with those responsibilities.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Child members
A Child uses their own Steam account but cannot manage family membership or change Adult-controlled restrictions. An Adult can set which games are available, restrict Store, community, friends, or chat features, set playtime limits, review playtime reports, and handle requests for extra playtime or access. Children can also request purchases for an Adult to approve and pay for. Valve says an Adult can recover a Child account through Family Management after the Child has been in the family for at least 30 days; see the Steam Families FAQ.

- Open Library in your own Steam account.
- Find the eligible title in the games list or family library.
- Install and launch it from your account.
You play with your own account progress, including your saves and achievements where the game supports them. Steam Cloud and other game features still depend on that title’s implementation. If more than one family member owns the same game, Steam may let you choose which member’s copy or license to use when launching it.
Can family members play at the same time?
Yes, if they are playing different eligible games. For the same title, the number of simultaneous players generally depends on how many family-owned licenses are available—not how many people are in the family. Valve explains the simultaneous-play rules in its Steam Families announcement.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
| Situation | Can both play? |
|---|---|
| One member plays Game A while another plays Game B | Yes, assuming both games are shareable. |
| The owner plays one game while another member plays a different game from the owner’s library | Yes, assuming both games are shareable. |
| Two members play the same game and the family owns one copy | No; normally only one player can use that license at a time. |
| Two members play the same game and the family owns two copies | Generally yes, subject to the game’s own requirements and sharing eligibility. |
| Three members play the same game and the family owns three copies | Potentially, subject to the game’s requirements and sharing eligibility. |
For example, six family members do not get six simultaneous sessions from one purchase. If two people need to play the same title at once, the family will generally need two copies.
Which games cannot be shared?
Not every title in a family member’s library will appear for everyone. Valve lists restrictions for games or content that:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Require an additional third-party product key, account, or subscription.
- Are free-to-play, including DLC purchased for free-to-play games.
- Are restricted in another member’s region or do not support that member’s operating system.
- Have been excluded by the publisher.
- Have been marked private by the owner.
Valve’s Steamworks documentation says sharing is enabled by default for Steam games and DLC, while developers may exclude content or account for shared licenses where technical or business requirements call for it. That default does not make every game shareable.

DLC, purchases, and progress
A shareable base game does not guarantee that every expansion or item will be available to every member. DLC eligibility can vary; access may also depend on whether the borrower owns the base game. Free-to-play games and their DLC are excluded from sharing. Do not assume that in-game currency, consumables, account-bound items, or purchases made inside a game transfer between accounts. Purchases and progress remain associated with the account that made or earned them, and leaving a family does not turn borrowed games into owned games.
Security and cheating risks
Never give a family member your Steam password. Steam Families provides library access through separate accounts, so credential sharing is unnecessary. Invite only people you trust: Valve warns that if a family member cheats or commits fraud while using a shared game, the owner may lose Family Sharing privileges or receive a game-specific VAC ban. This is a specific risk tied to misconduct in a shared game, not a claim that every ban automatically transfers. Some VAC-protected games may also be unavailable for sharing. See Valve’s FAQ and safety guidance.

Family Management is missing
- Start from Store → account name or profile menu → Account Details, then look for Family Management.
- Try Steam in a web browser if the client or mobile app shows different menus.
- Restart or update Steam, and check whether your account already belongs to a family.
An invitation will not send or cannot be accepted
- Confirm the invitee is a Steam friend and the family has fewer than six members.
- Check whether the invitee already belongs to another family or is subject to a cooldown.
- Confirm both accounts meet the current country and Store-region requirements.
- Check whether an earlier invitation is still pending or has been declined.
A game is missing from the Library
- Check whether the title requires a third-party account, key, or subscription, or is free-to-play.
- Check the publisher’s sharing settings, regional availability, operating-system support, and whether the owner marked the game private.
- Make sure you are looking for the base game or DLC that is actually eligible; DLC access is not guaranteed just because the base title is shared.
Two people cannot launch the same title
Check how many copies the family owns. One copy generally supports one active player at a time; separate family members need separate available licenses to play the same title simultaneously. The owner playing a different game is not, by itself, the old-library lockout described in guides to the retired sharing workflow.

A Child cannot change a setting or access a game
That is expected for a Child account. An Adult should review the Child’s restrictions and game access in Family Management, or handle a purchase or access request there.
A game launches but an online feature does not work
Library sharing does not remove a game’s third-party account, subscription, or technical requirements. Check the game’s own requirements; Steam Families cannot guarantee that every online mode, offline mode, or DLC combination works for borrowers.
When another option makes more sense
- Buy another copy if two people need reliable simultaneous access to the same game.
- Use Steam Remote Play Together for a supported local multiplayer game when one owner can host; it is a different feature, not a borrowed game license.
- Check third-party requirements separately. A shareable Steam license does not necessarily provide another player with a publisher account or external subscription.
If a family or invitation remains blocked after you check eligibility and membership, consult Steam Support’s Steam Family troubleshooting page.
