Ryzen Z2 Extreme can have a gaming advantage over Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 in a handheld, particularly when power is limited. That is not a blanket win: the chips have the same 16-CU RDNA 3.5 graphics configuration on paper, while HX 370 has more CPU cores and a higher power ceiling. Device memory, cooling, firmware, wattage and game settings can matter more than the processor name.

How the Z2 Extreme and HX 370 compare

Ryzen Z2 Extreme is designed for handheld PCs; Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 is a laptop processor that also appears in some handhelds. Neither is simply a faster version of the other. The Z2 Extreme pares back CPU resources and targets handheld power limits while retaining a high-end integrated GPU.

AMD lists specifications separately for Ryzen Z2 Extreme, Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. Device memory varies. The “AI” Z2 Extreme name identifies a variant with an NPU; do not assume every product using informal “Z2 Extreme” shorthand has identical specifications.

Why fewer CPU cores can help a handheld game

Power can go where a game needs it

Gaming on a handheld is often constrained by the total power and heat the small chassis can sustain. Many games benefit more from graphics performance than from having 24 CPU threads available. With fewer CPU cores to power, a handheld-focused design can allocate a larger share of its limited thermal and electrical budget to graphics. That is a design rationale, not proof that every Z2 Extreme device beats every HX 370 system.

A wider power ceiling does not guarantee more frames

HX 370 supports a higher configurable maximum, but a handheld may not be able to sustain that level comfortably. In PC Gamer’s test of an HX 370 OneXFly F1 Pro, moving from 15 W to 30 W produced only a small gaming difference. In that implementation, additional power did not translate proportionally into more gaming performance. A laptop with stronger cooling may behave differently.

Memory and device tuning matter

Integrated graphics use system memory, so memory speed and configuration can limit frame rates. Representative Z2 Extreme handhelds use LPDDR5X-8000; PC Gamer noted that the MSI Claw A8 had only about 7% more memory bandwidth than the ROG Ally X despite the GPU’s 16 compute units. Faster memory can help, but it does not ensure that a GPU is fully fed. Cooling, fan profiles, firmware and sustained clocks also affect the outcome.

What the available gaming and performance tests show

Z2 Extreme versus Z1 Extreme: a useful but different comparison

PC Gamer reported Cyberpunk 2077 results comparing Z2 Extreme with the older Z1 Extreme. At 1080p using the Steam Deck quality preset and FSR Balanced, Z2 Extreme averaged 47 fps at 25 W versus 42 fps for Z1 Extreme, and 39 fps at 17 W versus 32 fps. At 1600×900, the reported averages were 46 fps and 35 fps, respectively. These results suggest Z2 Extreme can improve on Z1 Extreme, especially at the lower tested power setting. They do not demonstrate a win over HX 370. See PC Gamer’s early Z2 Extreme benchmark and memory analysis.

Test device Processor Single-core Multi-core
MSI Claw A8 Ryzen Z2 Extreme 2,748 12,182
ASUS TUF Gaming A14 Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 2,863 12,729

HX 370 led both CPU tests. The Z2 Extreme result was about 4% lower in single-core and 4.5% lower in multi-core, calculated from the reported scores. This is not a gaming benchmark: the comparison did not clearly disclose the Z2 Extreme’s power mode, and the systems had different memory capacities. The figures establish neither a universal gaming winner nor matched gaming performance. Tom’s Guide’s comparison is useful for context, not as proof of GPU superiority.

Why wattage, resolution and rendering method must accompany an FPS claim

A 17 W handheld result cannot be fairly compared with a 30 W or 54 W result without saying so. Nor can a 900p result establish a 1080p advantage. Upscaling and frame generation also change what the displayed frame rate means: report native or conventionally upscaled rendering separately from generated frames, and do not treat generated output as equivalent to native frames. PC Gamer observed frame-generation artifacting in its ROG Xbox Ally X review. For background on the importance of separating rendering methods in AMD performance claims, see AnandTech’s HX 370 review.

Memory bandwidth can hold back the graphics advantage

A 16-CU integrated GPU shares bandwidth with the CPU and other system activity. If memory cannot supply data quickly enough, increasing GPU power may produce diminishing returns: the graphics hardware has more capacity than the memory subsystem can consistently feed. PC Gamer identified memory bandwidth as a constraint in early Z2 Extreme testing. This is better described as a potential bandwidth bottleneck than as an inherently underpowered GPU.

When comparing two devices, check installed memory capacity and speed as well as the APU. A benchmark from a 16 GB configuration should not automatically be applied to a different configuration, and LPDDR5X-7500 and LPDDR5X-8000 systems are not identical. Memory is one factor among several; it cannot by itself explain every difference in FPS.

Choosing between a Z2 Extreme handheld and an HX 370 system

Pick a Z2 Extreme handheld for handheld-first gaming

  • Your priority is gaming in a compact system rather than heavy CPU work.
  • The device has fast memory, effective cooling and useful sustained power modes in the range you plan to use.
  • You care about performance at constrained wattages, fan noise or battery use as much as peak FPS.
  • You have checked device-level gaming tests at the resolution and settings you intend to play.

The ROG Xbox Ally X review describes a Z2 Extreme handheld with 24 GB LPDDR5X-8000 memory and strong 17 W performance behavior, but its results belong to that device and its configuration—not every Z2 Extreme handheld. The same review notes that Z1 Extreme systems can offer similar performance for less, so the newer chip alone does not settle value.

Pick HX 370 for CPU headroom or laptop use

  • You regularly compile, render, multitask, emulate CPU-heavy workloads or create content.
  • You want a laptop with a keyboard, larger screen and cooling designed for sustained work.
  • You expect to dock the system and benefit from additional CPU capacity.
  • The particular HX 370 device offers better value or a more suitable screen, battery, storage or connectivity package.

HX 370’s 12 cores and 24 threads make it the stronger general-purpose CPU on paper, and its 15–54 W configurable range gives device makers more room to tune it. Neither specification guarantees better handheld gaming; cooling and implementation determine what a specific system can sustain.

Compare the whole device, not just the processor

  • Confirm RAM capacity, speed and configuration.
  • Compare the actual power modes and sustained cooling behavior, not just the advertised maximum.
  • Match resolution, graphics settings, drivers and upscaling or frame-generation settings when reading benchmarks.
  • Consider display quality, refresh rate, battery, controls, storage, warranty and price for the exact model and region.

The MSI Claw A8 benchmark configuration cited by Tom’s Guide appeared to use 16 GB of memory; configurations can differ, so verify the exact model before applying those results. The OneXFly F1 Pro is an HX 370 handheld option for buyers prioritizing CPU capability, but PC Gamer’s 15 W-to-30 W finding applies only to its tested configuration.

Bottom line: a handheld gaming advantage, not a universal win

Z2 Extreme is best understood as a handheld-oriented gaming design with HX 370-class integrated graphics, fewer CPU resources and a narrower power envelope. It can be the better fit—and can show advantages—in a well-tuned handheld at limited power. HX 370 remains the stronger CPU, and no supplied matched gaming test establishes that Z2 Extreme universally beats it. Compare device-level results at the same wattage, memory, resolution and rendering settings before treating either APU name as a performance verdict.
