No general free-multiplayer weekend in August 2025 was identified in Sony’s official announcements. The free online multiplayer event Sony announced for PlayStation Plus’s 15th anniversary ran June 28–29, 2025. August’s announcements covered Monthly Games and Game Catalog additions instead.
When was PlayStation’s free multiplayer event?
Sony announced a temporary period when players could join online multiplayer matches without a PlayStation Plus membership: June 28, 2025, at 12:01 a.m. local time through June 29, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. local time. It was part of the service’s 15th-anniversary activities, not a lasting change to PlayStation’s multiplayer requirements. Sony’s announcement described access to multiplayer during that window; it did not make paid games, PlayStation Plus subscriptions, or catalog titles free.

What did PlayStation Plus offer in August 2025?
Monthly Games
Sony’s August Monthly Games announcement said members could access Lies of P, DayZ, and My Hero One’s Justice 2 beginning August 5, 2025. These were membership benefits, not an open-to-everyone multiplayer promotion. Read Sony’s Monthly Games announcement.
Game Catalog
A separate August 13 announcement covered Game Catalog additions including Mortal Kombat 1, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Sword of the Sea, and Earth Defense Force 6; Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis were listed for the Premium catalog. The U.S. announcement scheduled additions for August 19, and Sony noted that lineups and dates can vary by region. Catalog access is distinct from the online multiplayer requirement. Do you need PS Plus to play online?
For most paid PS4 and PS5 games with online multiplayer, Sony requires an active PlayStation Plus membership. Many free-to-play games are exceptions: Sony names Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone as examples that can be played online without PS Plus. That exception does not mean every free game or every online mode is exempt; check the individual game’s PlayStation Store listing. Sony’s support page explains the standard rule, and its PlayStation Plus page gives free-to-play examples.
Monthly Games are not the same as free-to-play games
Monthly Games are titles members can claim under their subscription; free-to-play games are available without charge and many do not require PS Plus for online play. A game’s inclusion in a subscription lineup does not itself waive the membership requirement for its multiplayer features.

Which PS Plus tier fits online play?
Online multiplayer is included with Essential, Extra, and Premium. If the only reason to subscribe is online play for a paid game, Essential is the relevant entry tier; Extra adds the Game Catalog, while Premium adds benefits such as classics, game trials, and cloud streaming in supported markets. Plan details and availability can vary by region. Compare the tiers with Sony’s support information. For current U.S. plan details, use Sony’s plan page; current prices should not be treated as August 2025 prices.

- Confirm the membership is active on the account being used to play.
- Check for a game or PlayStation Network outage and install any required game update.
- If another account on the console holds the membership, review Sony’s console-sharing settings; selected benefits can be shared on one primary PS4 and one PS5, but not every benefit is universal across accounts or devices.
- Check child-account parental controls, which can limit network functions.
- Review the game’s Store listing for its specific online requirements.
Sony’s support page covers subscription access, sharing, and restrictions.
