First check where the 990 PRO disappears: BIOS/UEFI, Windows, or Samsung Magician. Those are different problems. A drive missing from BIOS points toward its connection, slot, firmware settings, system support, or a hardware fault. If BIOS sees it, check whether Windows detects the device and whether Disk Management shows a usable volume. If only Magician misses it, troubleshoot the utility’s view of the drive rather than assuming the SSD has failed.
Identify which detection layer is failing
Before changing settings, check the drive in each place and note the exact 990 PRO model, computer or motherboard, operating system, firmware version if available, and whether the SSD is new or holds data you need.
- BIOS/UEFI: Does the system firmware list the SSD?
- Windows Device Manager: Does Windows enumerate a storage device?
- Windows Disk Management: Does a disk appear, even if it has no partition or drive letter?
- Samsung Magician: Does the utility list the SSD?
Device Manager and Disk Management answer different questions: Windows can detect a device without presenting it as a usable volume. Samsung’s Internal SSD Troubleshooting FAQ explains that a disk without a defined partition may not be recognized as a usable Windows disk.
If the 990 PRO is missing from BIOS or UEFI
Start with the physical connection and the system’s documentation. Samsung advises checking the SSD connection, BIOS settings or slots, and the motherboard BIOS. It cautions that an outdated motherboard BIOS may prevent the PC from supporting the SSD.

- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
- Shut down the computer and disconnect power as appropriate for the device. Follow the computer or motherboard manual’s safety and service instructions.
- Reseat the M.2 drive carefully, following the system manual. Confirm that the slot supports an NVMe SSD and the 990 PRO’s physical size; an M.2 slot is not necessarily compatible with every M.2 drive.
- Check the system manual for relevant firmware settings and whether the chosen slot supports the drive. There is no universal BIOS menu sequence or slot map.
- Check the computer or motherboard maker’s support page for a BIOS update and follow its instructions. Do not assume a setting or update intended for another model applies to your system.
If the SSD contains important data, avoid repeated experiments that could alter it. If you cannot safely access or reseat the drive, ask the system maker or a qualified technician for help.
If BIOS sees the SSD but Windows does not show a usable drive
Look separately for device enumeration and for a partition or volume. Open Device Manager to check whether Windows lists the device, then open Disk Management to see whether a disk appears without a partition or usable volume. Consult your computer maker’s documentation if storage-controller settings need review.

- SAMSUNG MAGICIAN SOFTWARE: Get the most out of your SSD with Samsung Magician's advanced yet intuitive optimization tools; Monitor drive health, protect valuable data, and receive important updates for your 990 PRO
Do not initialize, partition, or format a disk that may contain data you need. These operations can make recovery harder or destroy data. If the drive is new and confirmed to contain no needed data, use Windows’ disk tools only after verifying that you have selected the 990 PRO and understand the consequences. Samsung describes partition setup and formatting as remedies for an unpartitioned disk; they are not safe first steps for a drive with existing data.
If Windows sees the 990 PRO but Magician does not
Magician’s ability to display a drive is not the same as hardware detection. First confirm that Windows sees the SSD, then refresh Magician or restart the computer. Samsung also identifies outdated BIOS, RAID/SCSI controller presentation, and port issues as possible reasons the utility may not recognize an SSD.

- MADE w/ PS5 IN MIND: Ultra-slim Integrated Heatsink is designed to dissipate heat from your device to stabilize its temperature and prevent performance issues; It’s compatible with PlayStation 5 and PCI-SIG D8 standard desktops and laptops****
- Check whether the SSD is presented through a RAID or SCSI controller configuration; consult the system maker’s documentation before changing controller settings.
- For Magician-only recognition problems, Samsung notes that older AMD chipsets or drivers may not be supported and suggests Microsoft’s default driver for that utility-recognition issue. This is not a fix for an SSD absent from BIOS.
- If Windows itself cannot detect the device, return to the BIOS and Windows checks rather than treating Magician as the cause.
Check firmware only when the drive can communicate reliably
Firmware is model- and date-sensitive. Samsung’s firmware and software support page listed 990 PRO firmware 8B2QJXD7, released in December 2025, as intended to improve read-operation stability. It listed 7B2QJXD7, released in September 2025, as addressing intermittent non-recognition and blue-screen issues. Availability and relevance can change, so check the live listing for the exact drive model before acting.
Samsung strongly advises making a complete backup before a firmware update, even though its FAQ says the update process does not impact stored data. Follow Samsung’s current instructions, and do not attempt a firmware update if the SSD is not detected well enough for the update utility to communicate with it.

Test the drive in another compatible system
Samsung recommends checking the SSD in another computer to help isolate whether the issue follows the drive or stays with the original system. If you do not have another computer, a compatible M.2 NVMe USB enclosure can be an optional test setup. Check that it supports NVMe—not M.2 SATA only—as well as the drive’s physical size, USB interface, and host system. A result from an enclosure alone does not conclusively prove that the SSD has failed.
When to contact support
If the 990 PRO remains absent in a verified compatible system and slot, contact Samsung support or use the applicable warranty channel. If the drive contains important unbacked-up data, stop formatting, initializing, or resetting it and seek qualified data-recovery advice before making further changes.
