Use Samsung Magician to identify your 990 PRO’s installed firmware and check its health/status, then compare the firmware version with Samsung’s official support listing. As of Samsung’s December 2025 listing, the latest 990 PRO firmware shown is 8B2QJXD7, released to improve read-operation stability. Back up important files before firmware maintenance and follow the instructions shown for your system.
Check the installed firmware version first
- Download Samsung Magician from Samsung’s official consumer storage support page. Samsung offers the utility for Windows and macOS and recommends using the latest version; the version number on the page can change.
- Open Magician and check that it detects the drive as a Samsung 990 PRO. Confirm the installed firmware version shown for that drive before deciding whether an update is needed.
- Compare the installed version with Samsung’s official 990 PRO support and firmware listing. Use Samsung’s listing rather than a third-party firmware mirror.
Update the 990 PRO firmware
Samsung’s support listing currently shows firmware 8B2QJXD7 for the 990 PRO series. Samsung says it was released in December 2025 “To improve read-operation stability.” Check the listing against the version Magician displays for your own drive; Samsung’s support information may change.
- Back up important files before beginning firmware maintenance.
- In Samsung Magician, use the update option presented for the detected 990 PRO and follow the on-screen instructions. The exact interface can vary by app version and operating system.
- Allow the update process to complete as instructed. Do not interrupt it or shut down the system while Magician is carrying out the update.
- Afterward, reopen Magician and confirm the firmware version it reports for the drive.
Samsung’s listing also records earlier releases and their stated purposes. These notes describe Samsung’s release rationale; they do not mean every 990 PRO has experienced the issue mentioned.

Check Samsung 990 PRO SSD health
Use the drive’s health or status area in Samsung Magician to monitor the 990 PRO and review any warnings the utility presents. Samsung’s support materials describe SMART health monitoring, but the available guidance does not establish attribute-by-attribute thresholds. A single SMART reading should not be treated as definitive proof that a drive is failing.

- If Magician reports a warning, preserve a backup of important files and consult Samsung’s model-specific support information.
- If the drive is not detected, check that the utility is current and that the system recognizes the drive; consult Samsung’s support information and your computer or motherboard documentation for model-specific compatibility and access details.
Confirm the model and system context
The 990 PRO is a PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD. Check the exact capacity and model on Samsung’s support page, and consult your computer or motherboard documentation when physical fit, heatsink clearance, or access to the drive is relevant. A heatsink or other accessory is not inherently required to update firmware.
