The change let developers deploy compatible contracts without first getting Ronin’s approval; it did not move Ronin to a new blockchain or automatically grant access to every marketplace, wallet feature, or promotional channel. Ronin later broadened the strategy beyond games, then completed a separate migration to an Ethereum Layer 2 in May 2026.
What Ronin changed on February 12, 2025
Ronin called the initiative “Open Ronin.” Its specific access-policy change was removal of the mainnet smart-contract deployment allowlist: developers could deploy EVM-compatible contracts without prior permission from Ronin. The announcement also described a more streamlined route for NFT creators to list collections on Ronin Market, but contract deployment and marketplace listing are separate forms of access. Ronin’s announcement
This was not a chain migration. At the time, Ronin described itself as an EVM-compatible Layer 1 using Delegated Proof of Stake. The February change opened contract deployment on that network; its later move to Ethereum infrastructure was a separate event.
Why Ronin opened beyond its curated gaming roots
Ronin became closely associated with Axie Infinity and Sky Mavis’s games. A more curated ecosystem could focus support, but it also meant developers faced constraints on who could deploy and how projects fit into the network. In January 2025, Ronin’s “Operation Leviosa” framing emphasized a broader infrastructure role and said projects would not need to make an exclusivity choice before using Ronin. Operation Leviosa

The strategic aim was to bring in independent studios and applications, make it easier for existing multi-chain projects to add Ronin, and encourage activity beyond Axie-centered gaming. More projects could also create opportunities for applications to compose with one another, and for users to carry assets and activity across games and other services. Those are intended network effects, not automatic outcomes of removing an allowlist.
What “permissionless” means—and what it does not
In this announcement, permissionless has a concrete, limited meaning: a developer could submit and deploy a compatible smart contract without first being put on Ronin’s deployment allowlist. It should not be read as a blanket promise that every part of the ecosystem is open, decentralized, safe, or guaranteed to distribute a project to users.
- Deployment is not distribution. A contract can be deployed without automatically receiving wallet discovery, marketplace visibility, launchpad placement, featured-game promotion, fiat on-ramps, or user-acquisition support. Those may involve separate tools, integrations, procedures, or business relationships.
- Deployment is not validation or governance. The 2025 announcement concerned contract access, not a claim that every participant could validate the network or that governance had become fully decentralized.
- Deployment is not an audit. Permissionless access is not a quality or security guarantee. Users still need to assess contracts, tokens, bridges, and application interfaces.
- Deployment is not legal immunity. Developers and application operators remain responsible for applicable legal requirements and for any moderation or access controls they choose to apply at the application and front-end level.
Early projects showed the breadth of the pitch
Ronin’s February announcement pointed to a mixture of existing ecosystem titles, new deployments, migration plans, and partnerships. These examples illustrate the intended range; an announcement alone does not establish a successful launch, durable usage, or commercial traction. Ronin’s project examples and contemporaneous GamesBeat coverage provide context.

- Tama.Meme was described as a fair-launch token platform, while a Virtuals Protocol partnership represented an integration or partnership rather than, by itself, a claim of full deployment.
Ronin’s ambitions expanded into DeFi and consumer apps
In March 2025, Ronin described a broader consumer-chain strategy in which games, social applications, and decentralized finance could share users and economic activity. Its examples included stablecoins, decentralized exchanges, money markets, liquid staking, NFT-backed lending, yield-bearing assets, perpetuals, automated liquidity managers, and DeFi features inside game loops. Ronin’s DeFi strategy announcement
Ronin said it was working with Alpha Growth on a $13 million growth program intended to incentivize activity and bootstrap liquidity. That was a stated program and strategic ambition; it does not establish that the full amount was deployed or that each proposed category reached mature production scale.
What Ronin offered developers
Ronin’s pitch combined lower deployment friction with ecosystem tools and potential distribution. Its website emphasizes wallet-first onboarding, game-to-game collaboration, economy design, and access to existing products. These are ecosystem propositions, not guarantees that a particular project will reach players. Ronin’s current site

- Build and deploy: Ronin documentation organizes resources around quickstarts, contract deployment and verification, and developer tooling.
- Connect to the network: Developers can consult the documentation for nodes and RPC options. The live documentation is the appropriate place to check current endpoints and setup guidance rather than relying on old instructions.
- Support distribution: Ronin describes NFT listing, Ronin Store sales, and ecosystem tools. Deployment does not itself confer a listing or promotion.
- Explore funding and rewards: In February 2025, Ronin advertised more than $10 million in builder funding and grants as available. That historical announcement is not evidence of current program availability or a particular team’s eligibility.
- Check Proof of Distribution: Ronin’s documentation directs builders to register relevant projects and contracts for potential rewards. Registration is not a promise of payment.
For a project starting now, use Ronin’s live developer documentation to confirm the current workflow, and assess the Developer Console as part of the current toolchain. Historical node migration instructions should not be treated as current setup directions.
Risks that come with an open deployment layer
Scams and unsafe contracts
Lower barriers help legitimate teams, but also make it easier to deploy malicious tokens, counterfeit game assets, phishing contracts, unaudited bridges, and other unsafe applications. Players should verify contract addresses through an official project channel and be cautious about links, approvals, and assets advertised under familiar names. Builders should treat audits, monitoring, key management, and incident response as separate responsibilities.
Access to users still takes work
Permissionless deployment removes a gate at the chain layer; it does not guarantee discovery in Ronin Wallet, a marketplace listing, launchpad support, or an audience. Studios may still need to build their own onboarding, secure integrations, and distribution plans. Wallet-first flows can help, but crypto onboarding and token mechanics can still add friction for mainstream players.

Liquidity and incentives can mislead
DeFi protocols need sound liquidity, oracle design, monitoring, and risk controls in addition to a successful deployment. Incentive programs can also reward activity that is short-lived or artificial: Sybil wallets, wash trading, and volume farming can make headline activity a poor proxy for retained users or product-market fit.
RON is an operational dependency
RON is used for gas and remains part of Ronin’s ecosystem design. Teams need to account for gas funding, token volatility, wallet onboarding, and the availability of bridges or exchange access relevant to their users. A token or reward model should not assume that emissions, treasury policy, or eligibility terms will remain fixed.

Ronin moved to Ethereum Layer 2 infrastructure
On May 12–13, 2026, Ronin completed a separate migration to become an Ethereum Layer 2 powered by the OP Stack, moving on from its earlier sovereign L1/sidechain model. Ronin said Ethereum became part of its underlying architecture, RON remained the gas token, and Conduit led the technical migration. Ronin described the transition as bringing stronger Ethereum security and faster transactions; those are the project’s stated rationale and expectations, and actual security depends on the complete rollup and operational design. The distinction matters: the February 2025 change opened smart-contract deployment; the 2026 migration changed the network architecture. The latter should not be retroactively described as what happened when the allowlist was removed.
RON emissions and builder incentives changed
In its May 2026 post-migration update, Ronin said annual RON emissions fell from approximately 45 million RON per year to 5 million, which it characterized as a 9× reduction. It put post-migration inflation at approximately 1.2% per year. Ronin also said future emissions would be directed toward builders through Proof of Distribution, and that treasury inflows would include remaining staking reserves, net sequencer profits, and 1.25% of Ronin Marketplace fees, up from 0.5%. These are figures and policy descriptions from Ronin’s update, not independently audited projections.
A pre-migration announcement had described expected inflation as less than 1%; the post-migration update superseded that estimate with the approximately 1.2% figure. Ronin’s pre-migration announcement
Proof of Distribution rewards activity, not guaranteed income
Ronin published a pre-migration scoring formula for Proof of Distribution that weighted gas spend at 18.13%, new users holding more than 10 RON at 11.12%, active users holding more than 10 RON at 12.89%, NFT volume at 20.95%, DEX volume at 20.54%, and contract volume at 16.37%. Ronin said the metrics could change and noted that activity generated by outside builders would affect whether certain ecosystem-operated apps received rewards. These weights describe that published formula, not a permanent schedule or guaranteed project payout. Developers should check the live registration and program rules in Ronin’s documentation.
