Drag x Drive is built around Nintendo Switch 2’s mouse-capable Joy-Con 2 controllers: move one controller for each wheel of your vehicle, then use motion gestures for basketball actions such as shooting. It is a 3-on-3 sports game, not a conventional basketball simulation with mouse support added as an extra.

What is Drag x Drive?

Drag x Drive is a Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive digital game in which players compete in a futuristic 3-on-3 sport using basketballs, tricks and wheelchair-like vehicles. Nintendo’s official U.S. store listing gives its release date as August 14, 2025, its regular U.S. price as $19.99 and its download size as 1.9 GB. The game is not listed for the original Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo describes the controllers as supporting mouse input in compatible games; this is not a system-wide replacement for ordinary controller inputs. In Drag x Drive, the mouse-like surface movement is central to driving, while motion sensing and buttons contribute other actions. Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 accessories page also lists motion controls, HD rumble and the C Button among the controllers’ features.

How do the two mouse controls work?

Set the two Joy-Con 2 controllers on a surface and move them like separate mice. Each controller represents one side of the vehicle, so the player steers by coordinating both hands rather than moving a single stick. Nintendo’s control overview describes the basic mapping:

Input In-game role
Move both Joy-Con 2 controllers forward Drive forward
Move one controller independently Turn or pivot
Raise a hand and flick the wrist Attempt a shot after collecting the ball
Combine surface movement and motion gestures Drive, perform tricks and make scoring plays
Use ordinary buttons Navigate menus and handle supporting commands

The key idea is not simply that each Joy-Con can act like a PC mouse. The two inputs operate at once and correspond to the vehicle’s left and right wheels. As an interpretation of that control scheme, moving both hands together makes forward motion legible, while a difference between their movements provides a natural way to steer. Motion gestures then let the player make an action with the avatar rather than issue every command through a cursor or button.

What the motion controls add

Mouse movement handles driving, but it does not handle everything. After collecting the ball, the player raises a hand and flicks the wrist to shoot. Nintendo also describes using the simultaneous Joy-Con mouse controls for steering, acceleration, tricks and plays such as dunks in its Switch 2 launch announcement.

That combination is what distinguishes the game from a standard mouse-driven title: the controllers track movement across a surface and also register physical gestures. Buttons still matter for navigation and supporting actions, so it is not accurate to describe the game as using only mouse controls.

How to set up the controllers and playing space

A Nintendo Switch 2 system includes one left and one right Joy-Con 2, along with two straps, according to Nintendo’s accessories information. Those are the controllers the game’s intended dual-mouse scheme is built around. Nintendo does not establish in the cited material whether an alternative control scheme is available, so check the game’s current instructions or settings rather than assuming that another controller can replace both Joy-Con 2 units.

Choose a clean, flat, stable surface with room for both hands to move independently. Nintendo’s health and safety documentation addresses the table or surface used for mouse controls and advises cleaning dust or dirt from the relevant equipment and surface.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
  • Clear clutter and leave enough space to move each controller without hitting the other or reaching the edge of the table.
  • Keep the working areas reasonably symmetrical so neither hand runs out of travel much earlier than the other.
  • Avoid rough, dirty, wet or highly uneven surfaces, and take care not to drag the controller shells over anything that could scratch them.
  • Reposition the controllers between plays if you run short of space; do not assume the game remaps controls or supports a lap setup unless its instructions say so.
  • The included straps may help with stability during mouse use. A Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip is not required for surface-mouse play; Nintendo describes it as a way to combine and charge the controllers, and sells it separately.

A mouse pad is not established as a requirement. It may be an optional comfort aid, but there is no basis here to promise that one improves tracking. Nintendo’s safety guidance supports keeping the controllers and play surface clean; it does not establish a particular desk size or guarantee that every table will feel comfortable.

Modes and multiplayer options

Nintendo’s U.S. store listing specifies one player on a single system, local wireless for two to eight players, and online play for one to twelve players. Local wireless requires a software update. Nintendo’s materials describe several activities beyond the main matches:

  • Public Park: Matchmaking with randomized players for online play.
  • Friend Park: Play with friends; Park ID sharing can be used to invite people who are not on the player’s Friend List.
  • Solo play: Face CPU-controlled opponents.
  • Practice and side activities: Try Rebound Scramble, Circuit Sprint, time trials and shooting contests, as well as spectating matches.
  • Customization: Change equipment and appearance, including helmets, armor, frames and tires.

The published player counts describe distinct single-system, local-wireless and online options, not a universal controller-per-player arrangement. For local wireless, each system must meet the game’s requirements; Nintendo’s cited listing does not spell out every controller configuration. Check the current in-game or official instructions before organizing a group.

Online features require internet access and a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online is required where applicable. Nintendo says GameChat can be used while playing with a friend; its Switch 2 accessories page notes that online features including GameChat require a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership. Video chat additionally needs a Nintendo Switch 2 camera or a compatible USB-C webcam.

Is it a hardware showcase or a full game?

It is fair to call Drag x Drive a showcase for Switch 2’s mouse controls: Nintendo’s launch messaging puts two Joy-Con 2 mouse inputs at the center of its identity. But it is more than a bare control demonstration. The game includes online and local matches, solo play against CPU opponents, practice activities, minigames, customization and challenges.

Whether that package is enough depends on what a player wants from a sports game. Nintendo Life praised the fit between the sport and Mouse Mode while questioning the game’s ability to sustain interest (Nintendo Life review). TechRadar and GamesRadar likewise found the controls distinctive but criticized aspects of the overall experience, including its depth or presentation (TechRadar review; GamesRadar review). Those are reviewers’ judgments, not a guarantee of how every player will respond.

Reviewers have also raised comfort or fatigue as a possible drawback of extended play. That is different from the initial learning curve: a player may understand the controls yet still dislike repeated hand movement, or may find that a cramped desk or awkward posture makes the experience less comfortable. Take breaks and adjust the setup if sessions become uncomfortable.

Who is likely to enjoy it?

  • Good fit: Switch 2 owners curious about dual-mouse input, players who enjoy short-session competitive sports, and people willing to learn a two-handed control scheme at a comfortable table.
  • Consider carefully: Players who want a deep solo career or licensed sports simulation, mainly play in cramped handheld conditions, or dislike gesture controls and repeated arm movement.
  • Not a reason by itself to buy the console: The game costs far less than the hardware, and its distinctive appeal depends on owning a Switch 2. It is best considered an experimental sports game for people who already have access to the system, rather than a standalone reason to buy one.

Troubleshooting mouse play and online access

If movement or tracking feels inconsistent

Check for dust or dirt on the controllers and surface, then try a cleaner, flatter and more stable area with enough room for both Joy-Con 2 units. Lifting or repeatedly repositioning a controller can interrupt a smooth movement rhythm. Nintendo’s safety documentation specifically advises cleaning equipment and surfaces used for mouse controls.

If you run out of table space

Move to a larger table, clear nearby objects, and recenter both controllers between plays. Keep the controllers away from the table edge so they cannot fall. The available official material does not establish that every action can be remapped or that a lap-based setup is supported.

If online play or GameChat is unavailable

  1. Check that the console is connected to the internet.
  2. Confirm that the Nintendo Account is available and that the required Nintendo Switch Online membership is active for the feature you want to use.
  3. Check that the game is up to date. Nintendo’s update support page explains how to update Drag x Drive; updates can download and install automatically when the console is connected to the internet.
  4. For GameChat, check communication settings and parental controls. Video chat also requires a Nintendo Switch 2 camera or compatible USB-C webcam.

If local wireless play does not work

Make sure every system is a Nintendo Switch 2, the game has the required software update, and all players have selected the local-wireless mode. The store listing confirms two-to-eight-player local wireless play and an update requirement, but does not specify every controller-per-player setup; verify that detail in the game’s current instructions before planning a session.
