Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe SteelSeries Rival 3 Gen 2 is worth considering if you want a straightforward gaming mouse at a budget price, but the right version depends on whether you value a lower price and lighter build or cable-free flexibility. The wired model launched at $34.99 in the US; the Wireless Gen 2 launched at $59.99. SteelSeries lists a 77 g weight and 1.35 ms click latency for the wired mouse, while the wireless version adds Bluetooth and longer battery life at the cost of extra weight.
What’s new in the Rival 3 Gen 2 lineup?
SteelSeries introduced the Rival 3 Gen 2 mice on May 20, 2025, positioning them as affordable gaming mice with quick clicks, durable switches and a familiar symmetrical shape. The wired model is the simpler, lower-cost option; the Wireless Gen 2 adds both a 2.4 GHz receiver connection and Bluetooth.
SteelSeries says the mice are “engineered for superfast performance, featuring ultra-optimized click latency of just 1.35ms.” That 1.35 ms figure is the manufacturer’s claim, not a universal measure of how quickly every game or computer will respond.

How does the wired Rival 3 Gen 2 perform?
SteelSeries specifies an 8,500 DPI TrueMove Core sensor, 1,000 Hz polling, 1.35 ms click latency and switches rated for 60 million clicks. Its 77 g weight is moderate rather than ultralight by current dedicated-FPS-mouse standards.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
RTINGS describes the wired model as an excellent FPS mouse with strong build quality, a comfortable symmetrical shell and superb raw performance. Its main reservation is weight: players specifically shopping for a lightweight FPS mouse may prefer a lighter design. The Rival 3 Gen 2 can still make sense if consistent tracking, a familiar shape and a modest price matter more than minimizing grams.
What the wireless model adds—and what it costs
The Wireless Gen 2’s 2.4 GHz receiver is the more gaming-oriented wireless connection, while Bluetooth is convenient for compatible laptops and other devices. SteelSeries rates battery life at up to 200 hours over 2.4 GHz or up to 450 hours over Bluetooth. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed runtimes; actual battery life can vary with use and settings.

Wireless flexibility brings practical trade-offs. The mouse takes AAA batteries, which add weight and need replacement or recharging. SteelSeries lists rechargeable AAA batteries as compatible. RTINGS notes the wireless model’s heavier body can feel stable, but may be a poor fit for competitive players who prioritize ultralight movement. WIRED also flags weight and the lack of RGB as compromises.
Shape, grip and everyday comfort
Both mice have a symmetrical, medium-size shape. RTINGS says the shell suits claw and fingertip grips, making the Rival 3 Gen 2 a plausible mouse for claw grip users who want a conventional, ambidextrous-looking design. Shape and comfort remain personal: hand size, grip style and how far you move the mouse can change whether the body feels right.

Neither version is the obvious choice for someone whose first requirement is an ultralight mouse for competitive FPS play. For other users, the wired model’s 77 g build is a reasonable compromise, while the battery-powered wireless model favors freedom of movement over minimum weight.

- Wireless batteries: The Wireless Gen 2 accepts AAA batteries, including rechargeable AAA batteries, so you can choose between replacing cells and recharging a compatible set.
- Replacement feet: WIRED reported a $5 replacement-feet set in 2025. Treat that as a reported price from that year, not a guarantee of current availability or cost.
- Switch durability: SteelSeries rates the switches for 60 million clicks. This is the manufacturer’s durability rating, not a promise that every mouse will last a particular number of years.
Is the Rival 3 Gen 2 worth buying?
For a budget gaming mouse, the wired Rival 3 Gen 2 is the more compelling value if you do not need wireless connectivity: it launched at a lower US MSRP, has RGB, and avoids battery management. RTINGS’ positive assessment of its build, shape and raw performance supports considering it for general gaming, with weight as the principal caveat for FPS-focused buyers.

Choose the Wireless Gen 2 if the ability to use 2.4 GHz or Bluetooth is worth paying more for and you are comfortable with AAA power and a heavier body. WIRED rated the line 7/10 and called both versions solid budget mice, while identifying the wireless model’s weight and missing RGB as compromises. Neither source establishes a universal best budget gaming mouse, so choose based on your connection, grip and weight priorities rather than the category label alone.
