There is no universal Windows 7 fix for nProtect GameGuard: the right repair depends on the game, its GameGuard version, the exact error and whether the publisher still supports Windows 7. Start with the official launcher, administrator permissions and a fresh game-specific GameGuard folder. Do not replace gameguard.des with a file from an unofficial download.
Before troubleshooting: identify the game and Windows version
GameGuard is an anti-cheat and game-launch protection component. It runs as a game starts and can interact with Windows components, drivers, security software and other programs. An initialization error does not, by itself, prove that Windows 7 is the cause; nProtect lists several possible causes for error 114, including a damaged installation, unsupported operating system, blocked or conflicting programs, and malware or spyware (nProtect error 114 FAQ).
- Write down the game name, exact GameGuard error number and wording, and whether the game shows an error, closes immediately, or crashes Windows.
- Check the game publisher’s current system requirements and whether it still supports Windows 7. Support can differ between games and GameGuard versions.
- Record the Windows edition, build and architecture (32-bit or 64-bit). Run
winverto see the Windows version and build; find the system type in Windows system information. - Note whether you use Windows 7 Service Pack 1, a released retail version, or an old beta/release-candidate build. Advice from the beta period does not establish compatibility for current game clients.
Microsoft ended Windows 7 extended support on January 14, 2020. It no longer receives normal security or technical-support updates (Microsoft Windows 7 lifecycle; Microsoft end-of-support information).
Try these safe fixes in order
1. Restart, then launch only once
- Close the game and its launcher, then restart Windows.
- After the restart, open the official game launcher and try to start the game once. Do not open multiple launcher or game copies.
A restart clears a process that may have been left running. If an error says “GameMon is already running” or gives error 115, check for a duplicate or stuck game/GameGuard process. A legacy GameGuard error list associates 115 with GameGuard already running or the game being launched more than once; treat that as historical guidance, not a universal current definition (legacy PlayROHAN error list).

2. Run the official launcher as administrator
- Find the launcher executable you normally use.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt and attempt one launch.
Running as administrator is one of nProtect’s suggested error-114 steps, not a guaranteed repair (nProtect error 114 FAQ). Do not permanently disable User Account Control. If this is an old browser-based game, nProtect’s reference to running Internet Explorer as administrator applies to legacy setups, not as a general recommendation for modern browsing.
3. Rebuild the game’s GameGuard folder
- Exit the game and launcher.
- Open the affected game’s installation directory and locate its
GameGuardfolder. Its location can vary by game. - Rename it to
GameGuard.oldso you can restore it if needed, or delete it only after confirming it belongs to this game. - Start the game through its official launcher and let it download a fresh GameGuard installation.
- If files are still missing or damaged, use the launcher’s Repair, Verify or Check files option. If none exists, reinstall the game from its official source.
nProtect lists deleting the GameGuard folder among its error-114 troubleshooting steps (nProtect error 114 FAQ). The official launcher should supply the version intended for that game.
4. Check security software and program conflicts
Antivirus, endpoint security, firewalls, network filters, overlays, screen recorders, macro tools, input remappers, DLL injectors, mod loaders, other anti-cheat software, virtual machines and sandboxing tools can interfere with game startup. Malware or spyware can also be relevant to error 114, according to nProtect (nProtect error 114 FAQ).

- Update the security product and check whether it logged a block involving the game or GameGuard.
- Use a game-specific permitted-app or exclusion setting only if the game publisher recommends it.
- If necessary, test one reversible rule change at a time, then restore protection immediately after testing.
Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled. If you perform a clean boot to isolate a conflict, record the changes and restore normal startup afterward.
5. Update relevant hardware drivers if the game crashes
If GameGuard produces a blue screen, restart or system-wide instability rather than a normal error dialog, treat it as a Windows crash—not merely a damaged GameGuard folder. Record the exact stop code, check Event Viewer and any available crash dump, and install Windows 7-compatible graphics, chipset, storage or network drivers only from the hardware manufacturer. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities. If Windows also crashes outside the game, address system stability before trying more GameGuard fixes. Historical Windows 7 beta reports mention GameGuard-related blue screens, but they do not diagnose a current system (historical Microsoft Answers discussion).
What to try for common GameGuard symptoms
Error 114 or initialization failure
Error 114 is not a single-cause diagnosis. Follow the restart, administrator launch and folder-rebuild steps above; then check whether the game supports your Windows version and whether security software or another program is blocking or conflicting with GameGuard. nProtect also identifies incomplete or damaged installation and malware or spyware as possible causes (nProtect error 114 FAQ).

Error 115 or “GameMon is already running”
- Close the game and launcher.
- Open Task Manager and end only processes you can clearly identify as belonging to the affected game or GameGuard.
- If you cannot identify the process safely, restart Windows instead of terminating it.
- Launch the game once through its official launcher.
Never end arbitrary Windows system processes. The error-115 association with a duplicate or already-running game comes from a legacy error list and may not describe every game’s current behavior (legacy PlayROHAN error list).
Endless updates or a repeatedly replaced file
If the launcher keeps downloading or replacing GameGuard files, it may be restoring files that fail validation. Let the official update finish; do not fight the updater by repeatedly replacing its files. If the loop continues, use the launcher’s repair or file-check function, rebuild the game-specific GameGuard folder, and contact the publisher if its official client cannot complete the update.
Compatibility mode does not resolve the underlying anti-cheat problem
Compatibility mode may help an old game executable, but it is not a general GameGuard repair. If the game publisher documents a target Windows version, test that setting on the launcher actually used to start the game:

- Right-click the launcher and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select the documented target operating system, if one is specified, and apply the change.
- Test once; undo the setting if it introduces new errors.
Do not assume XP SP2 or SP3 compatibility mode fixes GameGuard; historical reports show such settings were tried without resolving the underlying issue (historical Microsoft Answers discussion).
