Sony’s official PS5 Pro teardown, published April 21, 2025, confirms that the console still uses liquid metal between its main processor and cooling assembly. Sony added fine grooves to the application area to make the cooling effect more stable, alongside a larger, redesigned cooling system. The teardown also shows the Pro’s expanded memory layout, M.2 storage slot and Wi-Fi 7 module.
Does the PS5 Pro still use liquid metal?
Yes. Liquid metal remains the thermal interface material between the PS5 Pro’s main processor and its cooling assembly. Sony says it chose liquid metal for its cooling capability compared with conventional thermal interface materials. Mechanical Design Lead Shinya Tsuchida explained that the Pro keeps the basic structure used in the earlier PS5 design but adds fine grooves where the liquid metal is applied, intended to make cooling more stable.
Sony has not published long-term failure-rate data or evidence that the grooves eliminate leakage or make the console immune to orientation-related problems. The stated purpose is improved stability; it should not be treated as a guarantee against liquid-metal migration.
Sony’s teardown is an engineering presentation, not a home repair guide. The company warns that disassembling the console can cause injury and void the manufacturer’s guarantee.

What does the PS5 Pro teardown reveal about cooling?
The teardown shows a system-level redesign rather than a single cooling fix. The Pro needs more airflow to support its higher-performance hardware, and Sony changed several parts of the air and heat path.
- Three exterior airflow blades: The shell design creates additional paths for air to move through the console.
- Larger, redesigned fan: Sony changed the fan’s size and blade geometry to move more air quietly. The teardown does not provide independent acoustic measurements.
- Larger intake and exhaust surfaces: Expanded openings support the increased airflow requirement.
- Larger heat sink and more copper heat pipes: These components carry heat away from the processor.
- Higher-output power supply: Electrical Design Lead Shinya Hiromitsu said the PS5 Pro outputs about 48W more than the current PS5 and is larger.
The 48W figure is Sony’s comparison with the current PS5; it is not a measurement of the console’s constant power draw during every game or operating condition.

Is the PS5 Pro better cooled than the regular PS5?
Sony has added cooling capacity and redesigned airflow for the Pro’s more demanding hardware, but the teardown alone does not establish that it runs cooler, quieter or more reliably than a standard PS5 in real-world use. Sony presents the fan and airflow changes as ways to move more air quietly; independent temperature and noise testing is needed to compare actual operating results.
The hardware context is Sony’s stated performance increase: the company says the Pro has 67% more GPU compute units, memory that is 28% faster, and rendering up to 45% faster than the current PS5. These are Sony Interactive Entertainment figures published in 2024, not independent benchmark results. Sony also highlights improved ray tracing and AI-based upscaling, which contribute to the reason for a more substantial cooling design.

What else is inside the PS5 Pro?
The teardown shows a larger motherboard with more internal layers and a changed memory arrangement. Eight GDDR6 chips provide the faster memory used for gameplay, while a ninth DDR5 chip handles slower system processing. The board also includes an M.2 SSD slot for compatible storage expansion and a Wi-Fi 7 module.
The console’s launch configuration included a 2TB SSD. The M.2 bay provides an expansion option, but check Sony’s current requirements for capacity, firmware and heatsink compatibility before buying a drive.

iFixit’s independent teardown adds practical repair context: it describes tool-free panel removal, an accessible fan and retained repair-friendly connectors. Those observations do not amount to a repair-success rate or a long-term reliability assessment.
Does the PS5 Pro include a disc drive?
No. The PS5 Pro launched as a disc-less console with a 2TB SSD and a DualSense controller. Sony’s 2024 US launch MSRP was $699.99. The Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive is sold separately for players who want to use physical games or UHD Blu-ray discs. Live prices and stock can vary by retailer and date.
