It is intended for a cleaner recording or external audio connection—not to make the built-in speaker louder. For a DMG, choose a pre-pot tap for a fixed, cleaner signal or a post-pot tap if you want the volume wheel to control the output. Exact solder points depend on the board revision, so use a diagram for your specific console.
What a Pro Sound mod changes
The stock headphone output passes through the Game Boy’s headphone amplification, which can be weak or noisy for recording. A Pro Sound mod routes audio from an earlier point in the signal path to an external connector, bypassing that amplification. The resulting output is a line source: connect it to suitable recording or audio equipment, rather than expecting it to drive headphones at normal listening volume.
The two common tap positions are before or after the volume potentiometer (the volume wheel). The choice determines whether the wheel controls the modded output.
Choose the pickup point
| Option | Signal and volume control | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-pot | Taken before the volume potentiometer. Usually the cleanest tap, but the volume wheel does not control its level. | A fixed-level line signal for recording or external audio equipment. |
| Post-pot | Taken after the potentiometer, so the volume wheel controls output level. The original pot can introduce some signal loss or variation in quality. | Setups where adjusting the modded output with the Game Boy’s wheel matters more than getting the cleanest tap. |
Choose a connector and decide what happens to headphones
Reuse the stock headphone jack
This is the quickest, least intrusive route: the existing jack becomes the line output. The trade-off is that it no longer provides convenient amplified headphone listening. Because the Pro Sound output bypasses the headphone amplifier, headphones connected to it may be too quiet; use a separate headphone amplifier when headphone listening is part of the setup.

Add a dedicated output connector
A dedicated 3.5 mm, jack or RCA connector can leave the original headphone function and speaker path available. It requires cutting the shell, mounting the new connector and routing wires so the case closes without trapping them. Check connector placement and internal clearance before committing to a shell opening.
Check the console’s audio health first
A Pro Sound mod changes where audio is taken from; it does not repair a faulty audio circuit or improve the built-in speaker. The Game Boy Resource treats speaker replacement and audio amplification as separate audio modifications and cautions that an amplifier also raises inherent console noise. Before adding amplification, clean the power switch and volume wheel and replace faulty capacitors. If the speaker itself is damaged or weak, consider a replacement matched to the console; iFixit provides a Game Boy speaker-replacement procedure.

Install the mod safely and test before closing the shell
- Identify the console. Confirm the exact Game Boy model and board revision. This guide’s scope is the original Game Boy/DMG concept; Pocket, Color and Advance layouts are not interchangeable.
- Choose the tap and connector. Decide whether pre-pot cleanliness or post-pot wheel control matters more, then choose between repurposing the headphone jack and installing a dedicated connector.
- Gather appropriate tools and materials. Prepare fine hookup wire, soldering equipment and insulation. A new connector also calls for shell-cutting tools.
- Use a matching wiring diagram. Follow a model- and board-specific diagram for the audio points. Do not infer solder locations from another Game Boy model or revision.
- Route and insulate the wiring. Leave enough slack to open the shell for service, but keep wires clear of screw posts and other pinch points.
- Test before final closure. Check the line output and, where applicable, the headphones and speaker. Confirm that the shell closes without pinching wires.
Match the modification to the job
- For recording or a cleaner external feed: a Pro Sound line output is the relevant modification; pre-pot favors a cleaner fixed-level tap, while post-pot retains wheel control.
- For louder built-in speaker playback: Pro Sound is not the same as an internal audio amplifier or replacement speaker. Diagnose the console and speaker first; an amplifier can make existing noise more audible.
- For regular headphone use: plan on a separate headphone amplifier if you repurpose the stock jack for line out. A dedicated connector can preserve the original headphone function, but involves shell work and careful wire clearance.
