To manually update a PS5, put Sony’s official update file on a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive in the folder PS5/UPDATE, then install it from the console’s Safe Mode. This is the standard USB update—not the separate reinstallation option, which deletes user data.
Before you start
- A PC or Mac with an internet connection.
- A USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, with approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file, according to Sony’s PS5 system software instructions.
- A DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 controller and a USB cable, as specified in Sony’s Safe Mode update guide.
Use the regular update file from Sony’s official support page. Do not download the larger-purpose reinstallation file for this procedure; reinstallation is a different, data-erasing recovery option.
Prepare the USB drive
- On your PC or Mac, make sure the USB drive is formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting erases the drive’s contents, so back up any files you need before reformatting it.
- At the root of the USB drive, create a folder named
PS5. Inside it, create another folder namedUPDATE. - Download the current PS5 update file from Sony’s system software page.
- Save the downloaded file inside
PS5/UPDATEand name it exactlyPS5UPDATE.PUP. Use uppercase letters for the folder and file names; Sony’s Safe Mode guide also specifies single-byte characters.
The finished path should be [USB drive]/PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. Sony’s download can change, so get the current file from its support page rather than relying on a version number from an older guide.
Install the update from Safe Mode
- Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Insert the prepared USB drive into the console.
- Press and hold the PS5’s power button. Release it after the second beep—the first sounds when you press the button, and the second follows several seconds later. This starts Safe Mode; see Sony’s Safe Mode overview if you need its entry instructions.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable and press the PS button if prompted.
- Choose Update System Software, then Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
- Allow the update to complete. Do not turn off the console during installation: Sony warns that interrupting it can damage the console. Sony also advises against installing directly before or after a power outage.
If the PS5 cannot find the update file
Check the file and drive before trying again. Sony’s instructions identify these common requirements:

- The drive is formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- The folders are spelled and capitalized exactly as
PS5/UPDATE. - The update file is inside the
UPDATEfolder and namedPS5UPDATE.PUP. - You downloaded the update file, not the reinstallation file.
If a normal console download has failed multiple times, Sony directs users to its PC/Mac USB update procedure. Consult the current system software instructions and Safe Mode update guide for the latest file and steps.

For a routine manual update, use Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device. Do not choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as a way to perform the same update. Sony says reinstallation removes the PS5 system software and deletes all user data. Safe Mode includes options with data-loss consequences, so check the option name before confirming it.

Use only Sony’s official update data and documented method. Sony warns that other update data or methods, and installation on an altered or modified console, may stop the console operating properly and may affect warranty or repair-service eligibility.
