If Steam Store buttons do nothing, first open the same page in a regular browser and try again. When the browser works but the desktop client does not, the problem is likely in Steam’s embedded web view; when both fail, check for an outage, browser or network interference, or a purchase restriction. If you reached checkout, check your purchase history before trying again.
Start with a quick browser-versus-client test
- Open the same product page at store.steampowered.com in a regular browser such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari.
- Sign in to the Steam account you intend to use and try the same action: Add to Cart, Buy, Wishlist, or Checkout.
- Try another Store page, then check whether other Steam areas such as Community or your account pages load.
If the browser works and the desktop client does not, focus on the client’s embedded browser and rendering settings. If both fail, test another product and consider browser state, account eligibility, network interference, or a Steam service problem. A normal browser, the Steam Overlay, Big Picture, and an in-game browser do not necessarily use identical flows; Valve documents these distinctions in its Steamworks web-function documentation.

To assess a possible outage, check Steam Support and a reputable outage monitor. A monitor reports whether its own check can reach a service; it cannot establish that every region or user is affected. For example, IsItDownRightNow’s Steam Support check is a reachability check, not a definitive global status report. If several Steam services fail across devices and networks, wait before retrying a purchase.
Fix the Steam desktop client when its Store controls are dead
Exit Steam completely and reopen it
- Choose Steam > Exit rather than only closing the window.
- Wait several seconds, reopen Steam, and test the Store.
- If Steam will not close, save other work, then use Task Manager on Windows, Activity Monitor on macOS, or your system’s process tool on Linux to end only Steam-related processes. Relaunch Steam.
Valve recommends restarting Steam when steamwebhelper, the client’s web-rendering component, is not responding. A hung or blocked web view is one plausible cause of visible controls that do not react; it is not a diagnosis until the tests confirm the client is the affected path. Turn off GPU acceleration for web views as a test
- In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Interface.
- Turn off GPU accelerated rendering in web views, or the similarly named GPU-acceleration option shown by your client.
- Restart Steam if prompted, then test the Store again.
Menu wording can vary by client version and operating system. Valve notes that some video drivers have difficulty rendering Steam content with GPU acceleration enabled; disabling it may reduce interface performance.
Check security software that may interfere with Steam
Valve lists antivirus, VPNs, antispyware, firewalls, IP-filtering tools, peer-to-peer software, and download managers among possible sources of interference. If you suspect one, temporarily pause only its relevant web shield, filter, or VPN connection, restart Steam, and test once. Restore protection immediately. Create a narrowly scoped exception only if the test confirms that tool is responsible; do not leave security software disabled. Fix browser-only Store problems
Use a private window to test extensions and saved site data
- Open Steam Store in a private or incognito window and sign in.
- Try the same button. If it works there, an extension, cookie, or saved site state is a likely factor.
- Disable ad blockers, script blockers, anti-tracking extensions, and other page filters one at a time, or allow Steam’s site in the relevant tool.
- Check that JavaScript and the cookies Steam needs are not blocked by browser settings, privacy tools, or a school, workplace, or parental filter.
- If needed, clear site data for Steam, sign in again, and retry. This is preferable to wiping every browser login as a first step.
If the control still fails, try another current browser. A private-window success is a diagnostic clue, not proof of which extension or cookie setting caused the issue.
What to do for the specific Store symptom
Add to Cart does nothing, or the cart is empty
Test a different product page. If only one item is affected, check whether it is already owned, restricted in your country, age-gated, temporarily unavailable, or downloadable content that requires a base game. If Add to Cart appears to work but the cart is empty, sign in to the intended account in a regular browser and rebuild the cart there.

Wishlist does not respond
Try the Wishlist control on another product and repeat the test in a browser. If only the client fails, use the client steps above; if the browser fails too, test a private window and check whether the account is signed in correctly.
Checkout is blank or keeps redirecting
- Do not keep clicking the payment button.
- Open Account Details > View Purchase History and look for a completed or pending transaction.
- If no transaction is shown, open the cart in a regular browser and try to continue there.
- Only consider another payment attempt or method after checking for a transaction or pending authorization.
- If money was taken, the purchase remains pending, or the item was not delivered, contact Steam Support.
Community posts describe blank checkout pages in the client that worked in a browser, but those reports do not confirm a current Valve-wide defect. See the community discussion about a blank client checkout as an example of that reported pattern, not as an official fix.

The purchase button is missing or unavailable
A missing control can reflect a purchase condition rather than a broken page. Confirm that you are signed in to the right account; check ownership, the base-game requirement for DLC, age confirmation, regional availability, Family View, wallet or payment restrictions, pending purchases, and whether the item is currently available. These conditions more often alter the page or produce a message than make the whole Store blank. A community report links one blank-checkout case to Family View, but that is an account-specific anecdote, not a universal remedy: the reported Family View case.
The Store page is black, white, or only partly loaded
This points more toward a rendering or loading problem than a payment decline. If it happens only in Steam, restart the client and test with GPU acceleration disabled. If it also happens in a browser, try a private window, another product, and another network.

Separate network trouble from an account or product restriction
Notice which parts of Steam fail. If the client is online but only the Store or checkout is affected, a general connection failure is less likely. If Store, Community, and account pages all fail, test the connection before changing account settings.
- Disconnect a VPN temporarily and retry; VPN routing can interfere rather than help.
- Try a phone hotspot to compare with your home connection. If it works there, investigate the router, ISP, DNS, or network filters.
- Restart your router if other reachability tests point to the home network.
- Consider a different DNS provider only when the tests suggest a DNS problem. It is an advanced diagnostic, not a universal Steam Store fix.
Valve’s network connectivity guidance can help distinguish connection problems from client or account issues. A wallet currency or regional mismatch may also affect a purchase flow; it does not by itself explain every unresponsive button.
Protect your account and installed games while troubleshooting
- Do not submit payment repeatedly while checkout is unstable; inspect purchase history first.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection.
- Avoid unofficial “Steam repair” utilities, registry cleaners, and downloads claiming to fix Store buttons.
- Do not delete
steamappsor installed game folders as a Store fix. - Do not jump straight to reinstalling Steam. First test the browser, restart the client, try the GPU setting, check filters, and rule out product or account conditions.
If clicks open unrelated sites, trigger unexpected ads, or redirect outside Steam, treat that as a possible adware or malware problem rather than an ordinary Store fault. Valve describes such symptoms in its guidance on malware and adware affecting Steam.
When to contact Steam Support
If the issue persists after the browser/client and network checks, use the support path that matches the problem. Valve separates purchase help for games and software, Steam Wallet funds, in-game purchases, and Community Market transactions in its purchase support flow. For a broader client or Store issue, use Steam’s issue support form.
Include the exact button and product, date and approximate time with time zone, operating system, whether you used the client or browser, whether the browser test worked, whether one or multiple products are affected, exact error text, and a screenshot or screen recording. State whether a purchase appears completed or pending and which tests—such as disabling GPU acceleration or disconnecting a VPN—changed the result. Valve’s support form accepts a description and attachments.
